Abercrombie's Racy T-Shirts Causing Ruckus Nov 3, 2005, 07:18 AM CST Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version New Media Producer: Kerry Corum State Senator Steve Rauschenberger says he plans to introduce a resolution in the state Senate this week, calling on trendy retailer Abercrombie and Fitch to stop selling a line of racy t-shirts. The Republican, who is a GOP candidate for governor, says the $24.50 t-shirts are "offensive" and "degrading." He says if the Senate resolution doesn't stop Abercrombie from selling its shirts - he'll lead a boycott of the stores. The 49-year-old state Senator says he doesn't pretend to be the bellwether of what's cool but he believes the t-shirts disrespect women. Some teenage girls across the country also are calling for a boycott of Abercrombie. The women and girls say the shirts are degrading, but Abercrombie says plenty of women are buying them. |
Re: Politicians hard at work
A *resolution* in the state senate for "restraint of trade"???
That has to be unconstitutional. I don't know what the t-shirts say and I don't care. This is an outright abuse of senatorial powers. The only barometer of clothing sales should be the consumer. If the t-shirts are offensive to you, don't buy them. |
Re: Politicians hard at work
Restraint of trade, anti-freedom of speech, surely other things ...
This moron has all the qualifications to be on Bush's Supreme Court! |
Re: Politicians hard at work
Sigh.
Since it is a resolution, it has no more authority or weight than a recommendation by any consumer. Since the resolution has no authority, they are not restricting speech in any way. Since it involves questions of decency, it's probably not "restriction of trade" either. Somebody is always getting their panties in a knot about something. Abercrombie has a habit of pushing the envelope - that they might put out t-shirts some find demeaning to women is entirely possible, if in fact the children they use in most of their promotional material can be considered women. Do I think the Senator is a moron? Probably. But charge him for stupidity, and don't get hysterical in your accuations. |

If a goverment says a store can't, then that's restraint of trade. As for the resolution thing. Well, thought that one was obvious.
