Internet access a basic right ?

Somehow I missed that one when I read the constitution

I know that I am a bleeding heart pinko liberal commie, but this one is even beyond me.

Wireless all over would be a cool thing to have. Free internet access would be great, however, I don't think that moves it from the list of "wants" to "needs" muchless into the area of "rights"

"This is inevitable -- Wi-Fi. It is long overdue," Newsom told a news conference at San Francisco's City Hall. "It is to me a fundamental right to have access universally to information," he said.

Wireless access can be seen a basic right that should be available not just to business professionals but also lower-income citizens. "This is a civil rights issue as much as anything else," Newsom said.

Re: Internet access a basic right ?

if you're looking at the consitution its not more a right than indoor plumbing and sewage.... but that's also provided by cities... saw this on CNN this morning... seems like a great idea to me... with the emergence of the internet as such and important communication and research and business tool today... seems only natural that it would develop into a given....

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Now the homeless people can sit in their cardboard boxes and fire up their Alienware laptops for some kick ass wifi connections.

:grr: Shit like that is past stupid, and pisses me off.

Everyone already *does* have access to universal information.

It's called the public library.

I'm all for that idea! Might even move to the US for it! lol

I'm a diehard "net addict" and wrote up a little "in my defense" paragraph regarding me & the net & my "rights" to it.

"I am a geek at heart. To deprive me of a computer is to rob me of my passion & take an essential part of who I am as a person, away from me. It is to opress me from fully exploring who I am. Lack of internet is to deny me the ability & right to divulge in my individuality & express myself in the form that is truest to me, a geek, through modern technology"

wouldn't that same logic dictate that a laptop, or other computer to access that "information" is also a right?

Yes, that is what the same logic would dictate.

However, I sense that this "right" would follow the same handbook as the "right-to-life" crowd who defend the rights of the fetus...but then lose complete interest once that fetus turns into a child who needs food, shelter and education.

Well said!

And for further irony, when they are eligible to vote, the Right is suddenly interested in them again. Or at least for one day every two years.

But you pay for those "services". If you can't pay, you don't get (at least not for very long and unless you are on complete welfare, but lets not go there). The city "requires" usually that you have indoor plumbing and such. If you go out to the rural areas, there are still places that have outhouses, etc.

So, no those are not rights, they are modern conveniences...

Hey hairless...

That was the declaration of independence, not the constitution.

And it's the pursuit of happiness, not happiness that it mentions :okthumb:

You must have the older St. James copy. I have the newer Gregorian version.

*ignoring the first comment TOTALLY*

You are most correct, sarettah. The Declaration is a nice, historical document that...well, actually *is* worth the paper it's written on, but other than that, it's just a nice piece of history. It doesn't give us rights.

No, I'm working from the revised American Easy Read edition where they highlight all the important stuff in red and make it real bold :yowsa:

And it was published just yesterday, so it's the latest, truest of the true word (Thomas Jefferson told me so himself) :okthumb:

OK,

If you can not afford an internet connection, you can not afford to buy porn so you are of no use to me. Go to the library to surf.

Re: Internet access a basic right ?

I think all surfers should get free access, worldwide! But I also think that bandwidth should go back to the old $1000./Mb days so we can rid of 99% of the Playas, and allow only the strong to survive ;)

:bustingup
