Life is full of questions...

And here are a few of mine ! These are just a couple of things that I've thought of while I've been tinkering away with my TGP building escapades. Your answers & opinions would be most gratefully received !
  1. At the moment my TGP is only half done - I have an index page, followed by a page the surfer clicks through to with an advert, followed by my TGP populated with images from remote thumbs. Am I best to upload the lot in it's current format, making changes as I go ? Or should you only ever upload a site that is 100% completed and ready to go ? (When I say mine is incomplete, I mean that it doesn't all look quite as tidy as I'd like it to yet, not incomplete as in chunks of text missing or anything :yowsa: )
  2. 404 Traffic - what is it, where does it come from, what should I know about it, what should I be doing with it ?
  3. Is it possible to run more than 1 TGP (or website in general) from a single server ?
  4. Has anyone ever used a site like Dr.Html - it's a site that analyses your html pages and suggests how you could optimise them to make them load faster 'n' stuff. I'm thinking this is probably being uber-perfectionist, but then again the wider I can make my audience the better right ? (So if I can make the pages load quicker there's more chance people on low speed connections like dial up can still get in and spend money at my site ?)
  5. Server security - what should I be nagging my host about to make sure I don't get hit by exploits and other nasty things ?
  6. Traffic trades - I understand the basic concepts of how they work, but is there any sort of "etiquette" involved in the agreements you strike with other webmasters ? (Particularly when you are first starting out ?)
  7. Trackers & counters (such as Sextracker) - why do people use them ? Should I be interested in them ? Or are they just guff ?
  8. What is the average flight speed of an unladen swallow :p (I don't really want the answer to this one !)
Okay take it away guys ! I haven't been able to speak to most of ya for a couple of days, therefore I haven't asked any dumb questions for a spell and tonight I'm feeling lucky :p

Cheers guys

Dom

Answer the ones I know...

1. I preffer the coming soon approach. With a neat little coming soon spalsh and upload the site when I'm done but that's just me. The main thing would be to see what the sponsors you have signed up with require. Some don't want you to sign up untill the site is comeplete. But I think you should do what you feel comfortable doing as far as when to upload.

3. Yes. You can have multiple sites on one or several different IP addresses on the same server. Check your hosting package and see what they offer.

4. Never used it. Seems like a waste of time to me. Just make sure you don't have any useless or broken code on your site and you should be fine.

7. To know how many people are hitting your site and where they're coming from so you can help taylor your content. Before signing up though take a look and see what your hosting has to offer. I just recently found out mine has an amazing stats center.

Hullo, my wittle newbie kids! :waving:

Good to see you're working together.

Now...in no particular order:

Counters - don't use them. They're a traffic leak. All hosts give you stats, use those. (Remember: any link on your page has to bring you either $$ or traffic. These say they're going to bring you traffic, but they won't. They'll just give your surfers a nice flashy hardcore thing to click on instead of your banners.) Counters went the way of the dinosaur.

Traffic trades: it's simple. You ask. You send a tgp (I'm assuming) a nice email - compliment their site, etc. - and ask if they'd like to exchange links. You tell them what page you want to trade links on. (Main page, submit page, etc.) As a courtesy, you can put their link up first. However, if you don't receive a response or if the answer is no, take the damned link down fast, as you've just created a traffic leak. Also, pay attention to where *your* link appears on their site. If they give you a bottom of their main page link, make sure you give them a bottom of *your* main page link. If you go to http://www.freeplelinks.com/ and see where I've set up "Freeple's People's" that's going to be a "top of the main page" link trade for people who give me a good placement on their sites. That's where their link will go. However, I will also be adding a "More Freeple's Peoples!" table at the bottom for tgps who put their link exchanges on the bottom. Basically, make it *fair.* (There's nothing at all insulting with being put at the bottom of someone's main page. Remember: you're new. You *won't* be sending a lot of traffic to these people yet, and they know it. Top spaces are reserved for the bigger tgps who can get them surfers.) If you get a link, send a nice "thank you" email. Remember - in this business, traffic and GOOD WILL are both important.

Always make sure that your nick is associated with good manners and most of all, professionalism.

1. Right now no one even knows about it, so don’t sweat it. Work on it online/offline it’s no biggie. Unless you’ve got links pointing at it. Then the priority is the bookmarkers, this isn’t a free site (as Morgan has covered), get some content up and the lack of banners will actually be a good thing.

2. 404 traffic is surfers looking for something that either did exist and doesn’t now or they’re just poking around your site using the “pray and hope” methods i.e: you’ve 20 pics on 01.html – 20.html, they might type 21.html, it doesn’t exist so they’ll get the standard “The page you’re looking for…“ message, use some .htaccess and control that traffic:

Code:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteOptions inherit
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://.*YOUR-DOMAIN.com/.*$ [NC]

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.YOUR-DOMAIN.com/ANYTHING-YOU-WANT.html

3. YES! You just need to start adding sub folders:

http://www.YOUR-DOMAIN.com/index.html could be the start/hub/tgp
http://www.YOUR-DOMAIN.com/mature-milf-anal/index.html is a new site completely – mature/milf tgp or free site. You can make millions of these.

4. I’ve never used any of these “services”.
5. I’m not a tech guy .
6. Morgan has covered this very nicely.
7. You don’t need them, again Morgan has covered this. These counters are for the big guns that need to show what they’ve got.
8. 23 mph from what I hear – but are you talking about the European Swallow or the North American ;)

Well, obviously it's a North American swallow because it's in miles per hour, the only thing Europeans (and Brits) use mph to mean is milliliters per hour when they refer to how much their drinking.
