The blame game.
Here is an interesting take from a local
http://www.nola.com/forums/stbtownhall/index.ssf?artid=66817 There is no doubt that there is enough blame to be passes around, and not just for the politicans who are in office now, but those who have screwed and forgotten New Orleans for the past 30 years. |
Re: The blame game.
Thats the absolute best you can come up with to back your beloved GW?
( I nearly said "B***") |
Re: The blame game.
You know what? I agree that there's blame all around. But if we want to talk about problems beforehand, how about the federal funding for levee enhancement that was diverted to pay for Iraq and tax cuts
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/ea..._id=1001051313 And frankly, the Keystone Kops could've done better after the fact. |

i wouldnt so much say the last 30 years but definitely morial and foster should shoulder a LOT of the blame, since they're the ones who primarily wasted emergency management funding on casino and such... |

Re: The blame game.
Mikey, Mikey, Mikey ...
There is no black and white here. Pointing out the deterioration of FEMA's response to this disaster compared to what they did in New York on 9/11, or in the Mississippi Valley during the Flood of '93 doesn't touch on the activities of the Mayor of New Orleans or the Governor of Louisiana, let alone pretend to excuse them. Look - all Presidents appoint cronies who earn their positions based as much on Party loyalty or fundraising activity as on personal accomplishment or merit. That being said, IMHO you have to go back a long ways to find one as spectacularly disasterous as *****'s selections for head of FEMA. FEMA's initial response was feeble, inept, and poorly organized on its face. What makes this even more frightening is that this takes place four years after 9/11 - and after four years of politicing on how much safer *****/Cheney/the Republican Majority have made us. The Mayor has plenty of accounting to do. The Governor has plenty of accounting to do. I am neither a citizen of N.O. or of LA. They have no accounting to do to me. The other cocksucker - that's a different story. ****** - Joe said I can't use his name today as he is busy talking about Harry's hairy balls |

Re: The blame game.
Mike, putting politics aside - I have been wondering what the locals think of the mayor. Has he been competent in the past?
To an outsider, it looks like he did about all a mayor can do - EXCEPT, if those damn buses had been on the road helping people - they wouldn't been parked to get flooded in???? There appears to be plenty of blame to go around. It appeared at first that New Orleans had been somewhat spared in getting the brunt of the storm, which may have had some letting their guard down. But, it was definately going to hit in La/Miss somehwere & there would seem to be NO excuse for not having the National Guard ready to go immediately wherever they were needed. Of course , all the feds came out looking stupid.... FEMA director saying he had no idea what was going on & Bush telling him what a great job he was doing - when in realty, everything was wrapped up in red tape and NOTHING was being done. Mostly they are all pompus bastards, and don't have a clue about the real world. |
Re: The blame game.
Mike I would like to know what NO citizens are thinking (in your opinion) about the mayor as well. From what I have seen on T.V. he seemed to be the only one who was pushing to get things accomplished the whole time, and the only one who was actually working on things from the get go. Do you still think he has failed you as a mayor or do you view him as the only 'knight in shining armour' that arose during Katrina.
I don't know the name of everybody who heads every one of the departments involved in this, but I can tell you without knowing the names that all of them are responsible. It doesn't matter to what degree each is responsible they have all screwed up and made a mistake, a horrible mistake at that... That being said there is absolutely NO reason Bush shouldn't have had the national guard in their WHEN the levies were breaking in mass quantities already. We knew this storm was coming towards NO days before it hit. My guess is when it swerved away from NO at the last moment everyone (meaning Bush and his cabinet/advisors) was so relieved they forgot that it was still going to be devastating none the less and lowered the 'alert level' Even if Katrina was not goign to have ad irect hit on NO it was going to have a direct impact somewhere in America. It was also still going to hit NO period and have a major effect on them especially since the entire city is below the sea level. I can't help but wonder if the worse had happened if the reaction would of been quicker by everyone who had the power to send in the cavalry or if we would of still seen the confusion we did. |

Re: The blame game.
Louisiana's not a state known for being pristine in the management of its affairs. Or rather, it's one of the few states that doesn't particularly attempt to hide its greed.
Trying to blame Nagin for this is ridiculous. I don't care what city or town you are mayor of, you don't have shit for authority. And if Nagin had attempted to make the NOLA folks leave whether they wanted to or not, his control only extends to the city limits of NOLA proper. I guess they could have all just hopped the parish line and been hanging out in Jeff or St Tamms when the flooding started... |
Re: The blame game.
Interesting article, but his timeline is incorrect.
Blanco declared a state of emergency on Friday before the storm hit. The President declared LA, MS, and AL states of emergency on Saturday before the storm hit. The President declared LA and MS "disaster areas" on Monday after the storm hit. Ryan, "That being said there is absolutely NO reason Bush shouldn't have had the national guard in their WHEN the levies were breaking in mass quantities already. We knew this storm was coming towards NO days before it hit." The President can't just move in troops. The Governor (or legislature) of a state has to request the assistance or give permission for the assistance to come in. Otherwise, it's considered an invasion and an act of war. Same thing if other states want to send in their Guard to help. Gov or Leg has to request or approve it first. For reference, look up the Posse Comitatus Act and the Insurrection Act. |
Re: The blame game.
for the most part, all that is being said in this thread is "i hate bush".
hate bush all you want... but don't do it to the point that it is simply reflexive and ignorant. bush has lost any credibility that he had with me in his failure to get in there and be a part of things as the countries leader during the worst natural disaster ever to be seen in the US. however, the mayor and governor let every citizen of the state down. they knew that the chances of a direct hit is 100% since the beginning to time. ... just a question of when. they knew the levies could not hold and they obviously were not very prepared to deal with the situation when it happened. telling the population to go to the super dome or convention center without any support, aid, authority figures, leadership or police was beyond insane. buses flooded in parking lots. police completely broke down (state and city) with no communication and nowhere to be seen and out of control etc etc etc. any objective view of the situation will clearly show that there was a breakdown on every possible level of government from the mayor to the president... however, it all BEGINS with the city administration and state administration... state issues do not begin and end with the Federal Government, Bush, FEMA or Cheny or Haliburton or Michael Moore or Iraq or South Park or whatever it is that is pissing you off most about our Presidents Administration. you can't blame the federal government without indirectly acknowledging your complete ignorance of our countries political system and how the country functions legally on both the state and federal level. |
