Fuck those that support lowlife scum that would resort to making fun of the death of a child.

Better yet.... DON'T give any support at all to the "friends of aeon".

Greenguy is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet in this business.

Im quite sick and tired of the hypocracy, politics and double standards that exists in the business.

So FUCK all of you that support aeon.

I called Greenie last night and asked if he wanted us to take a trip to take care of matters.

Business is business...but when you get as personal as bringing your children into it, you have crossed a line that doesn't go away.

proof positive that "freedom of speech" should not come without limitations. he is a bright guy, too bad he has to be so mean spirited. its fine to be mean spirited in my opinion if its somewhat entertaining in my opinion... but not to just ruthlessly attack everyone without descretion simply for the sake of attacking everyone.

good call in my opinion.

I have very little to say here.

What Aeon said about GG's tragedy was way below the belt and should not have been said or thought for that matter.

However, I am always against banning except for the most extreme circumstances.

So, this one leaves me quite mixed.

It would be difficult to contemplate a more "extreme circumstance" than the remarks made, sarettah.

We tend to forget that what we refer to as "Freedom of Speech" is a right protected by the First Ammendment of the US Constitution in order that a free press and the open exchange of information could always be maintained. The framers of the constitution included it (as an afterthought, by the way) to protect a fledgling government and its diverse population.

Since that time, it has been quite popular for idiots - for they are invariably idiots - to say "I have the right to say what I think." Really? Why says? This is not a US government run forum. This is a private company. This forum is given for the sharing of ideas amongst people who have little in common except working in the same industry. Because we have so little in common, some of those ideas are going to clash. We accept that on the basis of "you have your opinion, I have mine." We piss with each other because it's become a tradition in this business and provides some amusement value. Some of the piss comes very close to "a line," and some even treads over it. For the most part, we accept that, as well.

There is, however, another line. This is the deeply personal line we all have that indicates something has been said that absolutely will not be tolerated. It's different for all of us. If I feel that this board has crossed my own personal line, I'm free to leave and go do my posting elsewhere - as are we all. I can make my exit dramatic or silent, depending on how I feel - as can we all. Heaven knows, it's been done before.

Some lines, though, are very common to all of us. This remark crossed *that* line. And because this is a private company, owned and run by individuals, they have the right to hit the kill switch when they choose. In my opinion, they also have a responsibility in moments like this.

It's just so damned easy to say anything one chooses behind the safety of one's computer. It's easy enough to say the things that would get one beaten to death in real life. I'm not a violent person, but if someone had expressed joy in the death of my child, I'd kill him.

All I would need is *one* parent on the jury to get off.

As a writer, sarettah, I understand your point. Being anti-censorship is part of my job description. However, only a government can commit censorship.

Well I do know similar things were said to me on another board (not by aeon) and one of the owners of that board defended what was said. It was a surreal experience for me.

It shows that some other boards are owned and ran by entities that really have no regard for the posters, community or basic common decency when it comes to extreme personal attacks.

I’m happy knowing that wouldn’t stand for a second here, but saddened that it does elsewhere. :(

Peaches 09-01-2005 05:00 PM

Re: aeon you are banned

Let me clarify - what was said was not defended but the right of the poster to say it was. And in fact it was made clear to me I deserved to have it said to me. Again, it was surreal. In 8 years of posting tens of thousands of posts I think it was the only thing that really ticked me off from a board.

Re: aeon you are banned

Morgan - the idea that "only a government can commit censorship" may be true in certain technical way, but anyone with power has the ability to censor.

Doesn't matter in this context, anyway.

I don't think this is a censorship issue at all.

Aeon has taken an almost pathalogically sophmoric delight in telling me (and several others) how he'd love to see us eviserated, shot in the head, blah-blah-blah. Nobody really raised an objection. It's kind of like criticizing a victim of turrets for using profanity - they simply can't help it.

Banning aeon is no different than barring a drunk who can't handle his liquor from the local tavern.

We're off topic, but yes, you're right porndoggy, anyone with power has the ability to censor. There is however, a difference between what would be called "censorship" by the powers that be in an organization in which one's participation is purely voluntary and the acts of the state. All organizations have rules. If one breaks the organization's rules, one loses membership.

This is an extremely complicated and multi-leveled topic. (The one we're on now, not the first one.) I could argue on either side of this one just as effectively...which is why I'm grateful I don't have to.

I wouldn't want to be associated with a board that would allow such attacks. Freedom of speech is one thing, but these are ignorant attacks aimed at emotional and mental hurt. Hitting someone at a business level is one thing - hitting them at the deepest, most personal and emotional levels is another.

I've never suffered the loss that both you and Greenguy have suffered, I hope with a passion that I never have to. I would also hope that if I did, no one would use it in an attack, but it seems the net and it's message boards are full of people that use any and all means at hand to inflict hurt. Real life hurt, not just name calling or piss, but pure ignorant and brutal hurt. :(

Wow, have you cleared this ban with your advertisers? It has the most page views of any thread on the main board.

Go figure.

The company I keep boils down to a very simple credo that you all should be familiar with. "nothing personal, only business"

While I don't condone the nastiness or tone, I also don't have a stomach for censorship of any kind. (except for the no brainer scenario of yelling "fire" in a crowded public building) Words only hurt you if you let them.

Like many of you haven't done things in the past, present or future that may make you pariah?

Your playground, your rules. ;) Have a nice day. Back to work.

Uh, Bill, Aeon isn't known for one slip up event in the past. More like a daily basis. Several times a day. Big difference.

I talked to the guy's about banning him a couple months ago when he was spitting racial epitahs at Anthony on the board.

Censorhip my ass!!! There is such a thing as freedom of speech and there such a thing as abusing that freedom.

You say they are just words. But I bet if someone said some of those words to you in person, you would punch them out. So would I. So would others. But what? Because it's "A BOARD" the same behavior we'd knock someone the fuck out for, everyone is supposed to tolerate in the so-called name of anticensoship? Total bull!!!

There's a line between censorship and being stupid asses putting up with a foul mouthed piece of abusive filth. Aeon crossed that line -- back and forth a few hundred times -- long ago. His banning is long overdue.

That said, still luv ya, Bill. Just giving my opinion on the situation.

Re: aeon you are banned

This is probably the wrong kind of first post to make. But the truth is that this is the thread that brought me back to reading this board again. I heard about what was said here by Aeon and wanted to come see for myself. So I may as well be straight with you and tell you that.

As someone who understands quite a bit about pain, I'm a believer that a lot of personal growth can come through pain. In my experience, the only kind of person who'd make a comment like the one Aeon made about Greenguy and his stepson on this board, is someone who just hasn't suffered enough personally to understand why what he did is something most of us recognize quite quickly as "just wrong" behaviour.

I don't know you, Nick, but I want to tell you that I think it was a good thing you did, banning Aeon from posting here. I'm strongly against censorship, but I don't think that's the standard you're trying to uphold in this instance. Freedom to say what you want is very important. It may be almost as important as taking responsibility for the things you say and the effects they have on others and on yourself. In this case, I think Aeon has the opportunity to learn that words are actions, and that the action of attacking another will often carry consequences.

I guess, if I'm really being straight here, I should level with you and say that I do hope that Aeon goes to Las Vegas, and gets to suffer enough pain there to gain a better understanding of why what he did was wrong. Did I mention that I'm a big believer that a lot of growth can come through pain? Maybe it comes from growing up in Philadelphia in the 50s and 60s, but I sure had more than a few good lessons taught to me early by those who helped me understand that running my mouth to the wrong person at the wrong time could be quite painful.

I think Aeon just missed some 'taught on the street' classes growing up, and didn't get to learn some important things about dealing with people. So I'm really just wishing him the opportunity to experience some continuing education, which it seems he needs pretty badly.

Okay, apologies for the long post and the ramble/rant on my first post here. I really do appreciate what you did here, Nick, and the others who spoke out about this. My intention is to come visit more often now, and to see if I can contribute a bit more than just this long 'yeah, me too' post.

Why, thank you, Simon.

If I may wax philosophical for a moment, when one looks at the sum total of one's life and tries to determine one's "wealth," many things beat out money for a position on the list. Family, friends, health...and someone saying something like that.

You've made me feel wealthy, Simon, and for that I thank you. :)

Ok... So apparently I missed something the last few days.

Whatever it was ( And I'm assuming it has something to do with greenguys terrible loss) I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and say that It was probably totally out of line. Anything Negative said to a person who is in a state of personal emotional turmoil is way below the belt and should be dealt with quickly and firmly. I see that everone has already done that.

Again without knowing the specifics, On the Topic of Free speech I've always been of the belief that free speech is important but that one must also think before they speak. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD.

I couldn't even read all of that... Now that I am informed... Aeon is definitely a cunt.

I feel terrible for greenguy although we've never met or spoken before. I was dating a girl for years when she lost her father the same way. I know what it is like to lose a family member the way he did and my heart goes out to him and his family.

I am fully on the ban Aeon bandwagon, and no comment like that should go unpunished. ( to put it politely )
