Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
I spoke with Buff last night for a while.
You have to admire those guys for standing up for what they beleive in. I let them know that we all are concerned for them and wish we could do more than just sit. I spent part of the morning gathering up stuff for a Red Cross station. I found mine at the post office and got a truckload of blankets and stuff they had on the list. They are now suggesting getting them cold hard cash. Its very difficult to get the semis and stuff thru to the city. I hope that what I was able to gather up finds its way to someoen in need... there are a ton of people still stranded and waiting all over the outer regions of the city. I made a blog entry last night over at Kblogger which I will sum up here... THe next time you get ready to register a new domain or you are considering some new hosting... you might want to think of Zippa or DirectNic. Those guys are risking life and limb to keep things up and rolling for as long as possible. I gurantee that the $5 registrars would have packed it in at the first sign of a heavy thunderstom. You have to admire the tenacity [maybe a little insanity] of those guys. The Gov. of Lousiana is ordering a full evacuation of New Orleans... somehow I dont think Buff and Sig will leave though. And you know somewhere out there Billy is risking his ass for people he doesnt even know. The darkness of adversity reveals those with a truely noble spirit. God Bless New Orleans. |

Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
Thanks for posting this, guys, I was wondering about all the NO/Biloxi folk.
Has everyone been heard from yet? |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
No word on Wicked Temptress and Osiris. :(
|
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
My undying respect and admiration to Billy, Buff, Sig and all at DirectNic
I read the blog, astounding! |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
Sig, Buff and the rest of the DirectNIC crew who stayed behind are my heros!!
What a Huculean effort!!! They are the only thing working right in NO! |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
Thanks, Morgan.
>No word on Wicked Temptress and Osiris. :( We can hope that's just a factor of the communication infrastructure being down. :( |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
I second that, Mike. I sure wouldn't have had the courage to stay on. I'd have beat it out of there pronto.

Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
I'm hoping so, Mel.
Also found out that the news re: my sister-in-law and family was *early* news. They haven't been heard from since. They live in Long Beach, Mississippi - right between Gulfport and Biloxi. My mother-in-law isn't doing well, and won't be until she hears from her daughter. |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
:( Morgan.
This truly is so bad. My east Texas and San Antonio relatives have actually taken in virtual strangers from NO and Biloxi and the region - friends of friends, etc. Here's one nice thing that might brighten up the day a little -- good to see (amid all the looting, etc) some true humanity taking shape: http://neworleans.craigslist.org/hhh/ |

Just woke up. Thought about them all night.. Hang in there guys.. The disease in the water is going to get bad. Got to get out of there no matter what in the next 48 hours. Or better yet, hopefully they can get the water pumped out in the areas they are in. |

Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
Very compelling and should be one of the better stories that comes out of all of this, especially if they succeed in keeping the lights on til this whole thing is over.
Given the time frames being discussed, I'm not sure that's possible, but if they fail it clearly wont be for lack of determination, effort and pure hard work. I've always had respect for Sig and what he's done with Directnic, that's gone to a whole new level. And Buff, well, funny how fate works out, but ya know he's somehow very uniquely qualified to be doing exactly what he's doing. All that said, I sincerely hope they've got some folks working offsite to get Directnic up at an alternate data center, so these guys can get out of there. My hunch is Sig not only has that going, but is probably spending the downtime writing an improved Disaster Recovery plan for next time. |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
Its getting worse.
They may order a mandatory evacuation of the city. |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
I'm listening to a police scanner feeds and a soldier just got shot in the leg at the Superdome.

Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans

Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
My first gut reaction (after the shock) is to think how can I get into New Orleans
But then reality sets in and I realize even if I can get in I'm sadly not trained to be an asset in this situation Next best thing I guess I can do is see if we can get worldwide media coverage attention to Buff's Blog and Sig Pictures It's rare that I request a group effort but if any of you reading this have any major media strings you can pull .......... now is a good time edited to add: Guess I'm late to the party after reading MikeAI's post |
Re: Directnic Blog and Camera from New Orleans
I've been watching the tv coverage for days now.... thankful that the full force of the storm was not what it became, as I was in florida when Katrina hit there. Now I'm somewhat ashamed, as I did not consider the people that I know in NO and what this has affected them.
My thoughts and prayers are with the DirectNic crew for their efforts during this ordeal. The blog is absolutly compelling, and a true insight into what is going on in NO, and what is NOT being reported on tv.... I am also sure that Billy is under terrible pressure during this time, and send love and support his way during this time of crisis.... Anything that we can do, is there for the asking..... |
