Future Darwin award winner

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - With an FBI office a few floors above him and the agent in charge waiting in line, Andrew Johnson picked the wrong coffee shop to rob.

The 34-year-old went behind the counter and grabbed $165 from a cash drawer, authorities said. Carl Spicocchi, head of the FBI's Toledo office, thought Johnson was an employee until the store manager confronted him.

Johnson then jumped over the counter and threw the store manager into a juice machine, police said.

The manager, Spicocchi and two others tried to get Johnson on the ground. Spicocchi said he called 911, and other FBI agents in the building came down and handcuffed Johnson.

Police charged Johnson, of Toledo, with robbery and felony vandalism. Authorities said he later kicked out the back window of a police car.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - An escaped convict was caught by police in Brussels when he tried to steal the handbag of an off-duty policewoman, police said Wednesday.

The 34-year-old man, who had been on the run for the past month, was caught by another off-duty officer Tuesday after failing to snatch the woman's bag.

He had assaulted the woman as she and the officer were going home from work a few blocks away from a police station. They were both in civilian dress.

The convict's previous crime and the sentence he was serving for it at a prison near the capital were not immediately known.

Driver Chases Car After Falling Out

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Opening up your door while driving isn't a good idea, especially on a busy highway.

Robbin Doolin, 31, of the Kansas City suburb of Grandview, learned that Friday morning when she leaned out her fast-moving car to spit.

She went tumbling out onto U.S. 71 in Kansas City, and to the amazement of other drivers, she hopped up and chased her car as it careened down an embankment toward a construction site.

Doolin was recovering Friday night at a hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her leg, arm and head.

"It's certainly not prudent to open your car door on a highway, especially when you're not wearing a seat belt," said Capt. Rich Lockhart, a police spokesman.

Lockhart said the woman was embarrassed about the accident. Her explanation to officers: "I leaned out to spit and I leaned too far."

Never commit a crime on live TV. I thought *everybody* knew that!

Would-Be Robbers Caught on Shopping Show

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Viewers of a late-night cable TV program called police when they realized that instead of "Shopping Mania" they were hearing an attempted robbery. Two men were later arrested.

Gary Spirito, who runs the auction program out of a rented warehouse, said viewers heard the robbers off camera demanding the keys to a car after they invaded the building late Thursday. The viewers caught a glimpse of at least one of them as they left, Spirito said.

"We were on air and talking to the folks out there, and then I heard a noise and there was a man there pointing a gun at us, me and the other operator," Spirito said.

"We had a computer screen up at the time showing the bids, but (the viewers) could hear the audio."

The men fled when police were summoned by viewers, but officers caught up with the two suspects. Eddie Crisp Jr., 23, and Timothy Suggs, 22, were both on parole for prior theft and other convictions, said police spokesman Sgt. Jarrard Copeland.

At the time the show was interrupted, viewers were bidding on a tent, a Dale Earnhardt Jr. blanket, metal candle holders and other items, Spirito said. But neither man seemed interested in getting anything but a vehicle.

"They came to get a car from us. They didn't ask for anything else," he said. "He said, 'Give me your car keys.' And I said 'Well, they're out there in the car.'" Copeland said police believe the two also tried to rob a car lot about an hour before they walked into the "Shopping Mania" warehouse. At Legacy Motors, two men with a gun threatened an employee and the employee fled, he said.

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A man annoyed by a noisy car alarm fired at least three bullets into a Toyota Camry, silencing the alarm and bringing out police who hauled him away in handcuffs, authorities said.

David Owen Rye, 48, was arrested and booked for investigation of reckless discharge of a firearm and felony vandalism, Sgt. John Adamczyk said. Rye allegedly told officers he grabbed his handgun and went out to put a stop to the car alarm.

The owner of the Camry, a sailor whose ship the USS Theodore Roosevelt just returned from an eight-month cruise, was visiting a friend when he heard the gunfire at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, KCAL-TV reported.

"I mean, that's not a safe guy. I mean, you get upset over an alarm, over a noise like that, (then) there's some little kids making too much noise and he decides to do something awful," sailor Nicholas Moreno, 25, said.

Police were called to the Yosemite Avenue apartment building and Rye was ordered out of his apartment by an officer with a bullhorn. A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter also responded and Rye was arrested.

Neighbor Ken Davis said he heard gunshots and looked outside to see Rye holding a gun.

"It was little scary," Davis said. "I didn't know what kind of mood he was in. I didn't want to say anything to him."

La. Police: Barking Man Bites Mail Carrier

HOUMA, La. (AP) - A mail carrier got bitten - by a barking man, police said.

Mark D. Plumb, 20, of Butler, Mo., was arrested and charged with simple battery Wednesday after he ran barking from a house and bit the letter carrier on the shoulder, police spokesman Lt. Todd Duplantis said.

Plumb said he bit the carrier as a joke, and has no history of criminal activity or mental illness, police said.

Plumb was released from the Terrebonne Parish jail after posting $165 bond.

--I wonder exactly *who* was supposed to appreciate the joke?
He's got a history of criminal activity and mental illness *now,* that's for sure.

Counterfeit Bill Bears Wrong Face

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Bartender Brandy Tuczynski knew the $100 bill a customer gave her was fake when she held it up to the light and saw Abraham Lincoln's face instead of Benjamin Franklin's on the watermark.

The bartender's attention to detail helped lead investigators to a Lafayette man who police say had been passing the bogus bills since June.

Earl H. Devine, 22, faces four counts of forgery and four counts of theft. He was released from Tippecanoe County Jail on $10,000 bond Wednesday, a jail officer said Thursday.

Police first arrested Devine July 31 after he allegedly used a counterfeit $100 bill to pay for drinks at Chumley's. He was arrested again Tuesday on charges he tried to pass a similar bill at a Lafayette drugstore.

"The watermark on the bills don't correspond with the correct president's face," said Jeff Rooze of the Lafayette Police Department. "They all have Abe Lincoln's watermark, which is on the $5 bill."

Security features such as color shifting ink in the lower right-hand corner and a security thread also were missing, and the paper had red and blue dots indicating they had been made with an inkjet printer, police said. No telephone listing was available in the Lafayette area for Devine to obtain comment.

---"Obtain comment"??? What the hell did they expect him to say..."Oops"?
(The syntax in that last sentence is deplorable.)

The thing on "30 to 40" calls I posted is now entirely bold, and I didn't post it that way. I had made a couple of phrases bold, and that's how it looked after I posted it. I came back now, and the whole thing is bold.

The previous post with the tiny font was copy/pasted from the same site that I got the one right before it from. They should have the same size font.

Don't give me the ol' computer geeks "that can't happen line"!! :grr:
I go through that at home. :grr:

"That can't happen, honey."
"OK...then you explain to ME how it DID happen!"
"Uh...I can't."
"#@!#&*" :grr:

Other than that, crumpet, I think you're snuggles. :inlove:
