Do they build these fucking things to go bang? mine has just gone tits up .. core overload, critical temperature reached and goodnight .. cunting laptops! rant over, fix it tomorrow lol
|
mmm what kind of laptop?
i hear the problem is that it is very hard to clean heatsinks and shit not like desktop where you can every now and then open it and take out heatsink and clean it. i have seen quite a couple of them go bang because of it. the thing may look clean on the outside but on the inside there could be a shitload of dust just from regular usage. specially on the p3s and |
Yeah gonna rip it apart tomorrow and check it out, its a p4 2.6 and always runs hot .. I have been searching the web and these have whats called "narcolepsy" which occurs due to the cheap shitty components they use. It begins with S and ryhmes with pony .. last one of these fuckers i am buying lol

Thats weird, my Vaio lasted for ages and i fact, i presume still works LOL
Im told the life expectancy for laptops is around 3-4 years and for desktops is around 5-6 years. Guess we really do live in a disposable society when things that cost $2k+ only have a relatively short life expectancy. I can remember when you'd spend 2k on a product and it would actually last for life (unless you did something to fuck it up). |
This is new mate, I was searching the net and apparently they do use inferior parts allegedly, and there are even third party companies who take on the work. These guys replace the parts with top notch heatsinks, and not just the replacement ones, that you get from sending it back to manufacturers. No I didnt do anything to it lol and yes 2k would last you a lifetime or at least expected to ..
I guess its how they get their money for replacement parts though .. allegedly .. Hmm these go-l.com and alienware ones look nice ... |
I've got an old advent laptop somewhere around here thats about 5 years old.. still runs with no problems...
My new Sony has been back to the shop twice with problems though and it's only 7 months old :( |
From all accounts mate they will keep going back .. will dig out those links for you, means sending the laptop away to the US, but they replace the shitty heatsinks and components with pukka ones built to take the heat.

Trev, here ya go man .. contact these guys .. http://www.vaioshutdown.com

$150 is a small price to pay to finally sort out an $2000 laptop :) Edit: Just did a conversion on XE.com and I was way off saying $1800  |
Welcome mate, they have some additional pages somewhere that aren't linked to their main site, but its no fix no pay ;)
|
you never told me what laptop :) sony ermn not to bash but i donīt trust a radio maker to do pcs. the vaios have all good stuff but once 1 part goes bad it is a pain in the ass to change (propietaritary motherboards and periferrals).
i am old school i make my own pcs :) alienware looks very nice. i am in to desktops laptops to me are backups or portables i only do basic shit on them. i know other folks that have their whole buisness in one. i just donīt trust my sometimes clumsy hands. :) ttyl fellas |
I build my own desktops which are my main use systems, but for laptops, honestly, I've gone HP on the last few models and never had any problems with them. Only replaced them to upgrade to a stronger unit. Currently running a Pavilion zv5000 and couldn't be happier.

I usually end up frisbeeing them within a while because they break.
This time I took out "a total replacement for the top range HP laptop current within 3 yrs provided it has not been frisbeed" :) |
I stick with the big names on notebooks and go with their models aimed at business. They depend upon corporate accounts that buy thousands of them yearly for their bread and butter. Consequently they have to build in some durability to keep the failure percentages and longevity long enough to keep those corporate accounts happy.
I tend to get about 3 years out of a notebook, and I use mine heavily. It tends to travel a lot, if not on an airplane, it at least goes with me to photoshoots to have a place to dump memory cards, etc. Problem is there isn't much servicable about a notebook. If there's a problem that requires a new system board or display, it usually makes more sense to just buy a new one. 3 years is pretty acceptable to me as usually by that time, it's very out of date and time to upgrade anyway. One tip for extending the life..... compressed air. Use a can of compressed air to blow it out as best you can by blowing into the vents while it's powered off every couple of months or so. It'll help prevent dust gunking up the fans, etc. And always make sure the vents and fans aren't blocked wherever you use it. |
I recomend Dell for laptops. I still have some from 5 years ago that work, including one that Dell replaced the screen for AFTER my warranty was up!
The problem with computers is not that they wear out, but rather in 2-3 years they are near obsolete. |
Have never even owned a laptop.
 |
I've taken a look at both the Dell and HP ranges, I wish I'd taken the time to look at them before I bought the vaio.
