I have a site which is a PR3 if you type it http://whateversite.com and it's a PR2 if you type it http://www.whateversite.com. What's up with that?

BillPMB 04-27-2005 12:00 AM

It means you should count the hits in from the search engine rather than worry about it's gay ass PR ranking.

Google rules obviously, but there are other fish to be spammed (did I say that?) Must have meant fried, but ya never know!

Inabon 04-27-2005 12:00 AM

google is crazy

sarettah 04-27-2005 08:40 AM

Operator error ?

Trev 04-27-2005 08:54 AM

It has something to do with W3C and the correct format for a URL. Google recognises both URL formats as the same site but the www is the correct format.

Sub domains are a different story.

From what I hear anyway :)

Actually, and this is what I think, not what I know (see sig) www.mydomain.com is a subdomain of mydomain.com

Here's a typically short breakdown:

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2068.txt

There's shed loads more on the matter but I hate trawling around W3C and the other various sites.

NickPapageorgio 04-27-2005 09:22 AM

Thanks for the info. I wasn't really concerned about it affecting me but I just found it weird.

Hell Puppy 04-28-2005 01:45 AM

Damn, I was hoping he was going to ask what causes big zits on the perineum.

I was kinda wondering about that one myself.

nickdark 04-28-2005 02:43 AM

I think youll find its how the incoming links are formatted.

If all your incoming links ( and PR) go to www.xxx.com, PR will show for that url, if there are none going to xxx.com, with no www, there will probably be no pr showing.

But Bill is right..PR aint worth much these days, except for spidering frequency.

Bill, I've emailed you and tried to get in contact re buying domains..can you get in touch please ?

Ill icq you again.

Google sees it as two different pages so they have different page ranks.

You should be able to see a difference as well on:

domain.com/
and
domain.com/index.html (or whatever page is directory default thingie).

The PR you see on your toolbar is purely for entertainment value. Google's "real" PR for your page isn't published.

Worry far, far more about on-page content, inbound and outbound links than PR.

pushpills 04-28-2005 07:25 AM

not really a bad thing, both urls are getting some seperate traffic. just worry about the hits (not from google spider)
