I love that show. Sorta Mr. Wizard meets David Letterman (back in the days when he's drop things off a tower or mush things under a stream-roller.) And toss in some of the SCTV "It blew up real good!".
I just get a real kick out of that show. Wondering if anyone else does too? And, is it just me or do the two guys on the show seem like they would be comfortably at home at an adult webmaster show hanging around the bar? |
Yeah the program rocks.
|
I've seen it a couple times and it was ok.
|
I watch it all the time... My favorite busted myth is still the getting electric shock from pissing on a live rail track... no wait... dead body in a car was a good one as well...
Lets just say it's a damn good show :) |
Love it, love it, love it ! Yup - they seem like 2 guys that would be fun to meet !
|
Love it. I liked the "penny from the empire state building" one and the "police car axle rip out" one also.
Also the one where they dropped that poor dummy from the crane lol. |
I've caught it a couple of times and really liked it. I supposed I need to add it to TiVo :)

Yup, good show, but there myths are often far fetched...
I liked that tree-canon.... or the chicken gun... |
This thread is very educational.
You realise all the above are that strange nerd/dweeb combo that like blowing things up , setting fire to things , and generally fucking about with stuff. :) |

Well that wasn't what the judge called it anyway  |
Yes, blowing things up (or catapulting or burning or ...) all in the name of science.
The best parts are when the myths don't stand up to it, and they say, ok, now what happens when we add 20X the amount of exposives or methane or whatever. I liked the one about chopping the head off in the ceiling fan. When that didn't work, they replace the fan motor with a commercial grade lawn mower engine and then replace the wooden fan wings with sharpened metal blades! Now that's good clean fun the whole family can enjoy! :rokk: |

the rest is just nerd with explosives ;) |
Another good one was the exploding toilet....
The myth was that some guy farted in a toilet then threw in his cigarette and blew his ass up... The myth was busted in seconds but they had to move onto hairspray, petrol and finally BLACK POWDER :wnw: Oh goddamn if they didn't blow that thing sky high :yowsa: |
They've only done one experiment that I have to disagree with.
The one about toast falling buttered-side up or down. I think human interaction totally influences the odds, so by removing the human element they incorrectly busted the myth. I know my toast lands butter-side down 95% of the time!! :zoinks: |

Love the show
and also love the new show "Boom" on SpikeTV, where they just blow shit up real good |
That is an awesome show! :) I loved the "revisited" one where they analyzed the comparison between frozen and thawed chickens going through panes of glass. Their slow-mo camera rocks. :)

Nope. That's just a myth. Haven't seen "Boom" yet, Sykk. Knew it was coming, didn't know they'd aired any yet. Cool. |

Aly ? Drawn out to post ?? I am impressed ! :nyanya: |
I think Jamie said it best in one episode.
Two minutes of science and 28 minutes of Adam getting hurt. This is one of the few shows I do watch. Interesting trivia: $35k to produce one half hour segment, Discovery buys it for $65k flat, no residuals. World Poker started out at $40k/episode because of the numerous camera angles. Discovery bought it for $40k/episode the first season, $75k/episide the second season. I believe they are >$100k/episode + residuals (which Discovery supposedly never does) Not bad for an attorney with extra cash sitting around. |
Interesting info, cd34. Amazing Discovery Channel can get away without the resids; that's a ton of money they're saving and the shows are losing.
Sykk, finally caught Boom tonight. LOL They blewed up real good! :okthumb: |
I've only seen one episode, where they tried to work out if a kid's stomach might really explode after enough pop-rocks and coca-cola, and that was hilarious.
Who are those two guys? I didn't even realise they weren't Australian! (show's how much I must be used to hearing American accents on TV) |
They are both Special Effects creators for the Movie/TV Industry -- although, they are not in the right city for most movie production, they do work for commercials quite a bit. I think the more memorable one was the Mountain Dew 'robot' machine that shot cans at a guy. They actually do show that in one of the episodes, and later use the base of that machine to pull up the elevator in that one where they drop an elevator to test whether jumping at the end of a long elevator fall can save your life. Myth Busted. :) Although they do mention the lady that survived a 55+ story fall, and they explain how that probably happened.
The way they get away with residuals is that it is a PPS versus Revshare issue. The smaller producers know that they'll only get a 3-5 year run on a reality home improvement show. You rarely see 'More than Human' which I believe was one of the ones where they had a residual agreement. Once a show gets that critical mass, the producers get a bit more leverage in requesting those residuals. Get too greedy and another producer will create a similar show. Junkyard Wars asked for residuals, my understanding is that Discovery felt the show was done, so, they created Full Metal Challenge which was a one-season show. Ratings dropped considerably because they lost what made Junkyard Wars unique. Cathy Rogers was one smart PhD and still produces shows in England. ABC, er, Disney, er, Discovery likes that pay-once, pay more than you would have to, but, have no further licensing issues. No different than sponsors that choose to pay PPS versus Revshare. You do what is in your best interest. |
Are they ubergay?
Good show though;) |
