Hell Puppy 01-29-2005 12:07 AM

Freezing rain and sleet scheduled for Atlanta. This is always quality entertainment, at least so long as it doesn't knock my power out.

The mere mention of the word ice in the forecast was enough to totally clean out every Kroger in town. Nevermind that the temperature is scheduled to get back into the 50's on Sunday, everyone in town stocked up on milk and bread like a blizzard was coming.

Dont even think about leaving the house if there's ice on the ground unless your local paint and body shop has a rewards program. People in Atlanta have a hard enough time driving on dry pavement, throw in some ice, especially the dreaded "black ice" and it's a body man's wet dream.

Oh, and I found a new source of entertainment! A large liquor store on a friday night when saturday is forecast to be iced over... I swear, it would make a GREAT reality show by simply placing a few cameras in there.

iamkathi 01-29-2005 12:14 AM

As a relative newcomer to ATL ( 1 year) I, too hit Kroger on the way home. At the slightest mention of ice I have thrown the New Years diet plan for the weekend. I did manage to get some healthy stuff, veggies and fruit. But, then what is an ice storm without chips, cookies, ice cream( sugar free!)

I plan to stay in my pj's all weekend and not leave the house.

Come on Mama Nature... bring it on! :bjump:

Peaches 01-29-2005 12:15 AM

So far we have NOTHING :(

iamkathi 01-29-2005 12:20 AM

It's raining and cold here. The ice is only a short time away...

You made it home just in time :okthumb:

NickPapageorgio 01-29-2005 12:24 AM

Yeah I hear that shit is headed to VA too. Geez I can't wait for VDOT to fall asleep at the wheel and allow 150 accidents to happen because they didn't put down sand or salt until AFTER the freeze had set in.

Peaches 01-29-2005 12:28 AM

Yeah, it was interesting - it was sleeting like crazy in Cobb County and around 34 degrees, but once I hit the mountains, bone dry and 39 degrees.

I'm listening and it's starting to rain now (great, I knew I should have taken the dogs out earlier) so we might get some stuff after all.

All our wiring is above ground and with all the trees - we almost always lose power when there's a ice or strong winds. And STILL no one has bought me my automatic on whole house propane generator :( :(

But I did get tons of batteries and a new camp lantern for Christmas so I'm ready :okthumb:

Hell Puppy 01-29-2005 12:29 AM

Still dry outside here a few minutes ago when I went outside to piss off of the porch....

But Doppler radar for the area has something menacing nearby coming from Alabama....and it's not that model we shot last year either.

Your dogs are small, just hold 'em out the window and squeeze.

On days like that down south I'd make a bucket of popcorn and watch the people try and drive!! :P People in the south don't have a clue how to drive in bad weather!!

And you don't know how to drive on the beach - it all works out in the end :P

grimm 01-29-2005 07:30 AM

New Orleans had a white christmas

it was like watching down syndrome old ladies drink and drive.

NickPapageorgio 01-29-2005 07:37 AM

For reference, here in Virginia, we had about an inch and a half of snow a month or two back...they completely shut down schools for 2 days. :(

People here go batty and absolutely lose their minds during any kind of precipitation.

JoesHO 01-29-2005 09:33 AM

NEWBIES!!! :nyanya:

Peaches 01-29-2005 10:18 AM

We completely dodged the bullet up here in the hills! 40 degrees and raining.

When I took the dogs out last night there was some ice on the deck and this AM the power flickered so I THOUGHT we were getting bad weather, but it's downright balmy outside and I'm going to the grocery this afternoon :)

Meanwhile, looking at the news, it looks like you guys south of me are homebound :( Next time a winter storm comes through, come stay at the mountains :okthumb:

VooMan 01-29-2005 10:25 AM

I woke up this morning to see a nice sheet of ice outside. Very pretty... The thing that sucks is I've only got half a pack of cigarettes. hahaha

Today would be a good day to stop smoking :)

OUCH!

Good luck with the ice down there!

We may warm up to 20 today! ;-)

VooMan 01-29-2005 10:40 AM

Peaches, you know I'm not a quitter... :awinky:

The funny thing is that I always have an extra pack of cigarettes with me. I have a running joke with Tony that I carry them "because you never know when you'll get caught in a snowstorm." I often use that line in July... I am eating my words. hahahahaha

No need to. It's to close to the ocean shore. If I lost control of the vehicle I might end up in the ocean!! :P

squirtingcarly 01-29-2005 01:14 PM

To the south of you in Columbus we have ice every where, power outages on one side of town (not me :) ) and cold. Tree limbs falling everywhere. I have to go out today so it should be interesting to see how many cars are on the sides of the roads.

STAY HOME, Carly! :( Seriously, unless it's a dire emergency, it's just not worth it.

Hell Puppy 01-29-2005 04:25 PM

Nice sheet of about an inch of ice up here in the northeastern Atlanta burbs.

I haven't attempted to go anywhere, but it looks like just walking up the driveway would be a challenge. I've only heard two cars go by since I've been awake and both of them seemed to be having a hard time of it. I dont plan on going anywhere unless I have to, I'm glad I made a wine and grocery run last night.

I'm just thankful the power has stayed on. I get cabin fever in a hurry if none of my toys work. Only casualty so far is the cable. I had to fail the network here at the house over from cable modem to DSL.

I have both for much the same reason vooman has an extra pack of cigarettes....we each have to have our fix.

Come on Kathi.

Throw on the ice skates.

Peaches 01-29-2005 05:20 PM

It has been raining non stop all day here, but still 37 degrees. The power has flickered a few times again this afternoon which makes me wonder if it's worse down the mountain.

I have TiVo that taped while I was gone and CT sent home his entire collection of DVDs with me to mail to Japan so I am quite happy going no where until the Sunday paper run tomorrow :)

How much porn is in that DVD collection?

Even CT isn't dumb enough to send home porn in a box with his mother!

Plus, remember they have room inspections. If porn DVDs were found in his room he would have to stay longer in Biloxi. He was doing ANYTHING to keep from having to stay there another day :)

iamkathi 01-29-2005 07:54 PM

Well, the ice here, south of town, melted a bit, but it is still only 28 degrees so I am fully expecting it to refreeze for tomorrow.

I explained the 'old school' way of using a cardboard box and sliding down the huge hill to all the kids around here.

I am now a goddess to the under 10 crowd. I did this with them, until I slid under a parked car and someones parents screamed at us all to stop before we got hurt.

We all gave up and came back to my house for hot chocolate and home made cookies.

Now, I have entertained the kids and they are all hopped up on sugar and have gone home for the evening.

Wahoo, I can't wait until tomorrow. I love this weather. :bjump:

Hell Puppy 01-29-2005 11:54 PM

Damn, we should've all camped out at Kathi's house...

Cookie sheets are also good for sleds - last a little longer than cardboard :okthumb:

Yeah, and they go really fast if you'll spray some PAM on the bottom of 'em.

VooMan 01-30-2005 12:54 AM

Well, I headed out to Sam's Club this afternoon, and it was desolate. Sam's on a Saturday afternoon... absolutely empty... worlds must be colliding!

Starbucks was the same. I ran into Super Target and bought groceries. No lines, no waiting, and a venti cafe mocha to keep me supercharged. If only I knew that Kathi was passing out sugar I would have stopped by. LOL
