World 'must learn from Holocaust'

Six million Jews - and others - died at the hands of the Nazis
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has urged the world to make sure evils such as those perpetrated in the Holocaust are never repeated.
"We rightly say, 'Never again'. But action is much harder," he told the UN.

The General Assembly gathered to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp in a special session.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, himself a Holocaust survivor, also addressed the meeting in New York.

Mr Annan said the United Nations, which was founded shortly after the end of World War II, must do everything in its power to prevent the scale of the slaughter undertaken by Nazi Germany.

The United Nations must never forget that it was created as a response to the evil of Nazism, or that the horror of the Holocaust helped to shape its mission

Kofi Annan

"Two thirds of all Europe's Jews, including 1.5 million children, were murdered. An entire civilisation, which had contributed far beyond its numbers to the cultural and intellectual riches of Europe and the world, was uprooted, destroyed, laid waste," Mr Annan said.

"Truly it has been said: 'all that is needed for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing'."

He noted that Roma (Gypsies), Poles and other Slavs, Soviet prisoners of war, and mentally and physically disabled people "were likewise massacred in cold blood".

"Groups as disparate as Jehovah's Witnesses and homosexuals, as well as political opponents and many writers and artists, were treated with appalling brutality," he said.

'Modern failures'

But Mr Annan admitted that taking action against genocide was much more difficult than repeating rhetoric.

"The world has, to its shame, failed more than once to prevent or halt genocide - for instance in Cambodia, in Rwanda, and in the former Yugoslavia," he said.

For my country it signifies the absolute moral abomination, a denial of all things civilised without precedent or parallel

Joschka Fischer
German foreign minister
He said "terrible things" were happening now in Sudan's western region of Darfur, and action was needed.

On Tuesday, Mr Annan is due to receive the findings of an international panel investigating the atrocities in Darfur.

Once the Security Council has the report, it will have to decide how to act, Mr Annan said.

Death camp survivor Mr Wiesel, whom Mr Annan described as a "dear friend", said he feared the lessons of Auschwitz had already been lost.

"If the world had listened we may have prevented Darfur, Cambodia, Bosnia and naturally Rwanda," Mr Wiesel told the 191-nation assembly.

"We know that for the dead it is too late... but it is not too late for today's children, ours and yours."

'Barbaric'

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said no-one would ever know if the UN could have prevented the Holocaust.

But he said the UN and each member state needed "to re-dedicate ourselves to ensuring that it will never happen again".

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer called the Holocaust "barbaric".

"For my country it signifies the absolute moral abomination, a denial of all things civilised without precedent or parallel," he told the assembly.

A worldwide week of events to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz began on Monday in the Austrian capital, Vienna, with UN officials honouring the victims.

19 white supremacy suspects arrested in Riverside County

Less than a week after we learned of more than two dozen arrests linked to hate crimes in the Hi-Desert, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department has arrested 19 more suspects involved in hate groups. They also confiscated guns, ammunition, drugs and white supremacy propaganda.

60 years ago, allied forces liberated Auschwitz, a victory against hate. But it wasn't total victory.

Just look at what authorities say they've confiscated from white supremacist groups here in Riverside County.

"We're still amazed we're finding this kind of garbage in this country."

The investigation started four months ago. Sheriff's deputies and FBI agents were investigating Howard Marshall, a volunteer high school football coach who they suspected was selling drugs. As the investigation progressed, they say they determined Marshall was also involved in hate groups with several other suspects, including his own son.

That's when investigators say they moved in.

Sheriff's deputies and FBI agents say they confiscated guns, knives, and other propaganda. They say it's the largest bust in years.

"Sheriff Bob Doyle's been in the law enforcement business for 30 years,” said Riverside County Sheriff’s Corporal Dennis Gutierrez. “He's conveyed to me this is the largest hate crime group he's come across."

"It's scary,” said Sheriff Bob Doyle. “It's scary to look at all of this stuff you saw, and that it's sitting around in people's homes ready to be used."

Authorities aren't saying whether these weapons were actually used in hate crimes, but they do say the investigation is continuing. Still, when we told residents people were stockpiling these kinds of weapons, they were shocked.

"That could be in your neighborhood,” said concerned parent Rachel Lopez. “Your neighbor could have those arms. That frightens me as a citizen, a person, a mother, and grandmother."

The sheriff told us he believes hate groups like these aren't common here in Riverside County, but he wants to keep the problem from getting worse.

"We want to stop it in its tracks. We don't want anyone to spread hate here."

But while that is a reminder of how far we've come these arrests remind us how far we have to go.

Bullshit.

I live in the low-desert near this high-desert area in Riverside County and saw the reports come in on local news as this story unfolded... this is just ONE of MANY such groups just in this local area - and it's growing. This may be one of the largest, but it's definitely no where near uncommon.

Just take your kid to the park... catch a local ballgame... watch the wanted photos on the local news at night... you'll see that it is growing. You'll see the tattoos on the arms of the fathers pushing their kids on the swings... you'll see the t-shirts and jackets with hate symbols and phrases...

Unfortunately it's all around us - we sometimes just don't notice it. My own sister married a guy into our family who's arms are filled with prison tats of swastikas, white pride, 100% honky and other "lovely" hate-filled sentiments... at their daughter's first birthday party we left early after seeing all his friends show up with matching tattoos and values. I worry about how she'll grow up...

It's embarassing and horrible to think of someone like that being in my own family... but I bring it up to let everyone know - it could be closer to you than you think.

No. We didn't learn a damned thing 60 years ago - and I don't think we ever will.

Thats just odd, there are almost no arrests of White Supremasists in Louisiana, must not be as big of a problem in the south;)

Hussein did a pretty good job of genocide as well.

and still today.. rwanda, somalia, etc... These are nations that don't show up on the radar, as there is no hope for some of them. Sad.

Not trying to sound like a supporter of hate in any sense, but from what I can tell, the only crime here "might" be unregistered weapons. (unless something proves out differently)

It is not a crime to be "white supremisist" "Nazi" or any other type of asshole.

You can not make "thinking" a crime, everyone has the right to be whatever type of asshole they want - and everyone is an asshole from somones point of view.

Making a crime of "hate" is at its roots no different than Hitlers actions, or Al Queda, or Comunism under Stalin.

There can be no thought police, there is no wrong thinking, thoughts are NEVER a bad thing.

Anybody here related to a holocaust survivor or ever met one?

When I was a kid I met several... they have since passed away, but that's one thing that will always stick out in my mind... learning about the holocaust and meeting survivors who lost family members but they themselves were able to escape. Makes me sick to my stomach whenever I hear of people who deny it happened.

My daughter's best friend's great grandmother is one... fortunately she tells stories to the girls whenever she visits... yes, it IS hard - but I don't think kids should be shelted by stuff like this... it's important to learn and to get to meet real people who can tell you the story from their POV - not from a book or a movie.

PornoDoggy 01-26-2005 01:43 PM

I met several survivors growing up.

In addition, I've had some confrontations with modern Nazis. My personal preference in dealing with them is a Louisville Slugger; I do, however, think my father's twin-50 cal. would be much more efficient.

Jeff, in addition to guns the article mentioned drugs. My understanding is that a lot of the various and sundry White Trash People's Parties are heavilly into that as a means of financing their guns.

The most prolific terrorist organization in the U.S. has been the various incarations of the Ku Klux Klan. I would like to think that law enforcement today keeps a close eye on them. I can agree with "There can be no thought police, there is no wrong thinking, thoughts are NEVER a bad thing" in theory; in reality, however, people expressing certain thoughts might bear watching, whether it's publically proclaiming the need for Jihaad, or publically preparing for the coming "race war".
