Ok, lets say that you found yourself looking for someone new in your life. How would you go about dating? Would you look for someone in the "industry" or someone not in it at all. Why?

Would you try online dating such as matchmaker or eharmony, maybe run adds in the local paper or goto clubs etc looking for someone?

If you found someone you liked, how would you explain to them what you do for a living?

Peaches 01-23-2005 02:25 PM

Have your friends set you up. I swear, except for meeting guys at said friend's parties, those are the only dates I've gone in forever. So far their taste in men sucks :P

But it really is the best way, IMHO. That way they more than likely already know what you do, you know they aren't ax murderers (supposedly) and you have mutual friends you can talk about if the conversation lags :)

Where's pushpills when you need him?

Well we would be targeting 2 different groups.

As a straight guy in the industry, I have not met any women who met my criteria for serious dating. I am also very demanding, and have high expectations. ( maybe higher then I deserve to have)

Of course, its a moot point for me now.

Vick 01-23-2005 03:53 PM

Don't look
Forget about looking for a mate. It's near impossible to find someone to date when looking for it

Go have fun at places and events you enjoy. You may meet interesting people and if not at least you'll enjoy yourself

Thought I'd be alone for the rest of my life as far as a mate was concerned. Wasn't looking, didn't care to look and ..........

...... met a wonderful woman and now we're engaged

agreed, as far outside as possible.... i like to look at what a woman does for a living. If she seems genuinley happy with what shes doing, no matter what her career plans, those types tend to have the biggest hearts and best heads on their shoulders.

grimm 01-23-2005 04:26 PM

haha yeah, life experience. Its the best way to go for "dating".;)

Raven 01-23-2005 04:41 PM

I've got to agree with Vick on this one.

We put out vibes of some sort when we're available.

I met my honey, Tev, at a point in life where not only wasn't I looking, I had no reasonable expectation that I should be looking. Couldn't have come along at a worse time.

BUT.

We're going to be married ten years in July, so I guess the timing is what you make of it. :)

Newton 01-23-2005 05:56 PM

Thankfully men like Billy don't share your opinion :)

It really shouldn't matter if they're in the industry or not - they're either someone you want to go out with or someone you don't.

Just keep the relationship off the boards. :P

Eddie 01-23-2005 10:48 PM

DAMN it's cold outside... and there is it's hell for 30 somethings in this town, I need to get my ass someplace warmer. At lease I would be able to go diving regularly. Now, that might be a way to meet someone, I could always use a dive partner :)

My advice?

Don't follow ANY of the advice in this thread!!!!

What is it with people and their desperate desire to find someone?! Good friends and always knowing someone cares about you is more fulfilling than 90% of relationships.

Go about your life, do the things you love to do, and the rest follows. If you are waiting for someone to share life with, you may never live.

Pardon me :yowsa: he he he

Also you can not look for what you feel is missing in yourself in someone else

To have a healthy relationship both member must be whole as a person and in themselves before even trying to have a relationship

Not that anyone here said they were looking for something in someone,
just tossing the free advice that is usually worth every penny you pay for it

P.S. WTF do I know, I was getting divorced 2 years ago about this time :agrin:

Eddie,

Do yourself a favor and don't ask advice on dating on a webmaster board. Half of us don't even know what a real breast looks like.

LOL!

Well, it's really interesting advice, think about how hard it is to find someone "right" normally. Then toss in what we all do for a living seems to increase that 10 fold.

I want to say that I would not take someone in the "industry" but having been with someone in the industry for the last 8 years it's really hard to say. At least girls from this world tend to understand it, or accept it more.

pushpills 01-24-2005 09:17 AM

You can meet volumes of chicks at bars, but just because you plowed her with drinks and got her number doesn't mean you are compatible.

Some will tell you different, but internet dating is the way to go. Why? Because you can find out a little about them from the profile, and talk to the person online first and see of you'd get along in person. Plus you can save the chat logs so you can remember all the info you got out of the way online, and use it for conversation on your first date as well.

Match.com and myspace (although ive never used myspace it does have a 75 alexa rating) is the way to go, especially if you live in a big city. If I do a a search for within 10 miles of my zip ages 21-23 I get about 250 results. Look at em, see who you like, and send them all a copy pasted I'm interested blah blah blah message. You'll get dates all week if you want to, unless you are butt ugly or tell her you really love star treck, in which case you could still get couple dates.

Combine match.com, myspace, tickle.com etc and you will find so many girls you could date, and you get the pleasure of talking to em for a while before your first date. I suggest making a seperate aim account for this, save all the chat logs and aim info and profile URL on each person in a text file.

I found my girlfriend on match.com and we've been dating for 9 months. You get to find exactly what you are looking for.

Best way to find a partner is to make an effort. You don't want to end up alone and bitter like CJ.....do you?

Newton 01-24-2005 10:08 AM

You have to be happy with yourself and do what you do in this life, before even considering a partner. Actively searching for a long-term partner signifies a deep seated desire, that you don't like your own company or are not happy alone.

Go about your business and be happy in what you do, a partner will come along at the most unsuspecting time, or at least that is what happens in my case.

Being alone is not being bitter, its a choice that some have ;)

VooMan 01-24-2005 10:27 AM

I like being by myself... sure, it can be lonely from time to time, but for the most part I keep myself busy and do what I want when I want.

If *she's* out there she'll come along when the time is right and not one minute before... and she'll like Star Trek. hahaha

First off, many congrats Vick!! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Second, your post is right on the mark. For whatever reason, when a male or a female is "looking", some weird signal or vibe just seems to be sent out that smells like "desperation" or at the least "trying too hard".

Ever notice when you're comfortable with yourself, be it that you are already with someone and not looking, or by yourself and not looking, that's when you get more flirts, more eye contact, more smiles? Confidence and ease sends out a potent and positive signal in and of itself.

So yeah, relax, be yourself, enjoy life. Remember being alone and being lonely are never the same thing ... unless you make it that way. And that's just not the way to go through life. Learn to take a pie in the face, to laugh at yourself, not to take yourself too seriously and just enjoy every moment of life, and you'll be a happier person. If you're alone, you'll enjoy it. And chances are you'll even become a magnet. Either way, it's win-win.

Actually the other question was answered. :)

As Vick said "Don't Look". Gotta get out of that frame of mind!

And if you are not looking, you'll take that which naturally falls your way. So whether it is no one (and you are happily alone), or if she's from the industry or not from the industry, it doesn't matter.

Put it on cruise control -- que sera sera -- take it as it comes your way.

What you said in the beginning is also true as well. My family just can't understand how I can work from home and not be around people. It completely baffles them. Today was the first time I left the house since Thursday afternoon and that was for only like 20 minutes!! Just didn't feel like going out and stayed home and worked, watched sports, and played Civilization III all weekend!! :D

I tell people I worked around a lot of people for a naumber of years and I like this much better. At least when I deal with idiots in this line of work I don't have to be around them.

If your ass is a Chinese restaurant I'll have the poo-poo platter

My friend Jerry Vandergrift kissed me in Home Ec. class
Later in the afternoon some jarheads in the locker room kicked my ass
I said guys I'm like you I like Monster Trucks too
Wanna see how many push-ups I can do?

I just wish I was queer so I could get chicks
Chicks dig guys that are
Queer guys that don't dig
Chicks that don't dig guys like me
See I'm not queer I'm too ugly

But if I were handsome just imagine how great it would be
Incognito as gay though but not actually that way though pseudo homo phony
Maybe it's a stupid theory or maybe just stupidity
But if I was a queerbee in the fashion industry
Scoring with a super model would be easy
Cause 'super model' means voluptuous but is also is synonomous with 'super dumb'

Ya see I'd be a good listener so she'd treat me like a sister and soon I'd become
That trusted friend that cares that rubs her back and braids her hair
No it wouldn't be a week before I'm in her underwear

I wish I was queer so I could get chicks
Chicks dig guys that are
Queer guys that don't dig
Chicks that don't dig guys like me
See I'm not queer I'm too ugly

Doesn't matter what I'm packin' in my denim it's what's in my genes
The only smoked meat the only sausage I would eat is made by Jimmy Dean
See I'm not to keen on the smell of Vaseline
No I'm not Princess Di and I don't wanna be a queen
I wish I was queer so I could get chicks

Anyway if I were gay I'd have to change my name to Dirk or Lewis
Hang out with my mom's hair stylist his name is Kip he's got a lisp he talks like this
And wear my mother's lingerie learn the songs of Broadway
And appreciate Depeche Mode and avant garde ballet

I wish I was queer so I could get chicks
Chicks dig guys that are
Queer guys that don't dig
Chicks dig guys that are
Queer guys that don't dig
Chicks dig guys that are
Queer guys that don't dig
Chicks that don't dig guys like me
See I'm not queer I'm too ugly
And I don't shave my heiny
Don't shave my heiny

See I'm not queer I'm too ugly
