CHICAGO (AP) -- The oldest African elephant in the United States has died at the Lincoln Park Zoo at the age of 55, officials said Tuesday.

Zoo keepers found the 9,000-pound female elephant named Peaches sprawled on the floor of an indoor enclosure early Monday. The elephant's eyes weren't focused and she was having trouble breathing, according to a statement from the zoo.

After spending several hours unsuccessfully trying to get Peaches back on her feet, veterinarians euthanized her Monday evening, zoo officials said.

The zoo said she most likely died from complications due to old age, but tests were being done to pinpoint a cause of death.

"The entire staff is saddened by the death of Peaches," zoo curator Robyn Barbiers said in a written statement. "Everyone at the zoo, particularly our dedicated team of elephant keepers, will miss her terribly."

Zoo officials said Peaches had been in reasonably good health, but because of her age they weren't surprised when they found her ailing Monday.

Peaches lived more than a decade longer than she might have been expected to live in the wild, zoo spokeswoman Kelly McGrath said. She said the median life expectancy for African elephants in the wild is thought to be around 42.

The zoo acquired Peaches and two other African elephants, Tatima and Wanki, from the San Diego Zoo in 2003 for the zoo's new Regenstein African Journey exhibit.

At the time, the animal rights group People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals criticized the transfer of the elephants from warm California, arguing that the climate in Chicago was too cold.

McGrath said then that the Lincoln Park Zoo never would have acquired the elephants if it thought there was any risk to the animals. She said Tuesday that weather played no role in Peaches' death, saying the elephant was kept in a heated building for the winter.

Tatima, who was 35, died in October, leaving only Wanki as the sole African elephant left at the zoo, McGrath said.

Officials are now considering whether to send Wanki to another zoo or to acquire new African elephants to bring to the Chicago zoo, McGrath said.

"Elephants are extremely social animals and Wanki cannot remain alone for too long," she said.

Edit: Glad to see you're still kicking peaches lol

This thread really needs to retitled an elephant named Peaches died at the age of 55.

I've been on the boards for many years now and have read about far too many people that I know dying. :(

Peaches 01-19-2005 09:23 AM

Well, I'm kinda hoping people know I'm not 55

Totally insane.For real.

Parts of the Story you haven't heard....

So I get him up to Canada for an interview.I'm like he is old school , I must have something he can do for me...

Well on the way in from the airport he reveals he hates "chinks". It went downhill from there..... as lets see the COO is of the Asian persuassion...

I mean this guy was ...out there.

As far as I know he just dissappeared.

What was the name of the murderer again. He was the guy Kaiser introduced to me who the told me "Yeah I'm a great techie and Kaiser says the one you have sucks."

I inform him our current tech is adequate , oh and he is my brother.

Oh Kaiser , a word please...

Kaiser of course denies ever saying a thing ....

Anthony was right , I should have canned that blue haired fuck then and there.I hardly saw him at the show anyway he had his lips fixed to the ass of FM.

Is that the one Pattyecake was engaged to for a very short period of time? If not, then the one she WAS engaged to was a moron. She was working for CE and he was on a CE message board hitting on chicks like PC wouldn't know, lol!

I THINK it's the same guy though.

Without question my favorite Tom Blanchard story is the one where JoeE was going to fly him to Vegas for a show. Words got exchanged where no one wanted him there and either Joe pulled the offer or Tom refused it. Tom went on and on about how bad it was he wasn't going because he had told his mental wife they were going to Italy (Venetian) and she was so disappointed. Oy.

Nickatilynx 01-19-2005 12:10 PM

I was driving back from A golf game up near Whistler...so I checked in with ,Anthony to see how the office was going and he said something like this..

""I've booked us up for dinner at Carderos:
We've got a wire in from so ands so :
I sent the receptionist home she has flu.:
We gotta see the lawyers friday ...oh and Tom at National net has a gun and is going to fly up to Vancouver to kill me either this evening or tomorrow morning.""

of course I start pissing myself laughing and making remarks like "Fuck Cardero's , tell the boys we go to the mattresses"

LOL

Or I may have said "Fuck that shit , lets find him first , fucking prick threatens us"

;-)))

But I remember Anthony's nonchalant report....

sorta like "normal day"

unbelievably looney that guy was...

ahahahahaha I remember now..I said "Don't worry he hasn't the price of the airfare" LOL

Sorry about the elephant... but glad to know we still have OUR beloved Peaches!

I realize who/what we're talking about here - but how could anyone (even the New Jersey speed bump) have said that Technick sucks? He's one of the fastest - if not THE fastest techies I've ever worked with... as you've said, is always available 24/7 if there are issues, questions or things to be worked out... honestly, he's the most dedicated tech I've met. Not only did he always get the job done - but he always took it one step further and did it even BETTER than what we asked for - more thorough and useful, etc. etc...

Going back to that year I saw Meat in the casino @ the Venetian when he was trying to convince me to ditch the PB to attend the PHB because there were people there that I should talk to. Still thinking that those people had nothing new to tell me than what I already knew (stupid... naive... idiot!) I declined... I think that if I'd attended I could have been rid of the bastard myself about a year earlier... maybe saved some of my own gray hair and nerves...

Gotta love that 20/20 hindsight shit... *sigh*

Technick ,

You can ALWAYS ask...

But as you know , a swift kick in the bollocks followed by a rant over what a programmer in the Punjab would cost me is usually the answer.

But sure , next time I see you , you can ask...

Oh lord, a blast from the past. Tom from Nat Net. That guy was a looney motherfucker!

The conversation that morning was strange. Him telling us about how much his wife and he loved Church's chicken, and how they would step over a dead body to get to his chicken... It was fucked up.

I met Tom the first time in the Ynot suite at Orlando. I thought he was a 'hoot, but not crazy. I don't think he could have built the business he did, if he had been crazy at that time. I don't know when he went over the edge, but it might have had something to do with his surgery & his wife's illness.

Actually my first server came from Tom, when Nat Net took over and bought all new equipment.
