Having sobered up...

I have found myself with a shitload of web properties that aren't maximised at all , as over recent times I've taken easy routes to gain traffic. ;-)))

My empire (thks Colin) is pretty much in shambles , there are some fine properties but they need rebuilding before they turn into ruins.

I'm talking a lot of work ....

but I digress...

I now have an offer ,through a family member as well , that looks awesome.

I have had limited experience in outsourcing , and would love opinions.

I'm looking at outsourcing prolly for:
1.) a full time designer.I have 40 paysites that need revamping - good to outsource?
2.) A webmaster to build up my freesites again and create a (spit) TGP for me , and gewnerally maintain everything - good to outsource?

sarettah 12-11-2004 01:21 PM

It sounds like you actually have a full time position (possibly 2) to fill. If I was you, I would find a family member with some design skills, some webmaster skills, some programming skills and a clue about how things work, offer him/her up $120k (USD) salary with good benefits and go from there.

But that is just imho of course....

Pay peanuts....

Get monkeys

Out sourcing can an effective way to get work done - BUT you will need to dedicate time to make sure they do a good job. Definately needsomone to be hands on, or else monkeys will just do monkey things.

IF you can monitor their grammar and spelling, you might be in with a chance. The majority of the ones I have seen, when it comes to comprehending the English language, are sadly lacking.

It's flied lice, you plick .. I need a sweatshirt with that on ... anyway, I digress :awinky:

Pick the people carefully, unless you want to waste time checking and re-checking their work. Your time doing this could cost you more. Proven webmaster skills with those who can verify, the projects they have done in the past, will pay dividends if hiring.

Rolo 12-11-2004 05:10 PM

We have almost outsourced everything - we are now 1/5 of the people we were before... only the strategists are left.

Its important to find companies that do a good job - thats much more important than the cost... while we have jobs at low priced countries, then we also have many in high priced countries, simply because its there we could get what we were looking for.

Outsoucing is not a matter about getting the lowest price possible - its about building a strong flexible business, which is quick to respond to change.

Rolo 12-11-2004 05:23 PM

> 1.) a full time designer.I have 40 paysites that need revamping - good to outsource?

Yes, good to outsource, but I would probably contact/partner with company like ours who are already in the game, than some 3rd world company who doesn´t understand the market. These are your potential money makers/babies, where the wrong ideas can be the difference between 1/5000 or 1/100 (for those who are wondering - this was not a conversion guarantee ;-)))

> 2.) A webmaster to build up my freesites again and create a (spit) TGP for me , and gewnerally maintain everything - good to outsource?

Again, good to outsource, but it needs to be to the right people... :-)

Nickatilynx 12-11-2004 08:56 PM

Great advice Rolo.

Thks very much. :)

We may need to talk in the New Year :)

Rolo 12-11-2004 10:24 PM

NP :-)

Hell Puppy 12-11-2004 10:29 PM

The key to successful outsourcing is having good project management in place. You gotta have someone to organize it, make sure it all gets done, gets done correctly and crack the whip when needed.

Timon 12-11-2004 10:33 PM

And think twice before outsourcing software development stuff to India!

They can always do everything, until it needs to get done...

Nickatilynx 12-11-2004 11:53 PM

HP ,

Good advice , thks.

Timon,`
Yeah ,tried India , I think I mentioned it to you privately , sucked.

Dont knock the so called third world options.

Its just a case of finding the right person(s).

The average salary in Thailand is $120 US a month..... you can get guys with masters degrees and amazing graphic skills working for next to nothing.
As soon as they get a chance they are off to europe/stateside/oz but only a small % get there and the rest have to work market rate.

I`ve been to thailand 17 times in last 4 years and those people are incredibly loyal and hard working.......

Why not try one site and if you get good results go for more. Do them in batches so your eggs aren`t all in the proverbial one basket.

Ok you obviously haven't actually employed anyone in Thailand or you wouldn't refer to the Thais as "loyal" and "hardworking".

Their low wages are off set by the fact that you need to hire 5 people to do one mans job and then still end up doing it yourself for them.

What always amazes me is that those Thais with masters degrees who graduated from a university where they teach in English do not actually speak or understand English themselves ;-(

When I asked a teacher about that recently he explained that if a university gets a reputation for being difficult and a lot of work students will take their business elsewhere....

Outsourcing for certain projects can be a good decision when it comes to adding money to the bottom line.

However it can also be stressfull, since training them to be how you want them to be isnt like training a family member who in most cases might be sitting right next to you.

Bad thing about hiring Family Members and Friends is that you have to set ground rules and be honest right up front and make them 100% aware that if the shit hits the fan they probably wont be working for you anymore, speration of Family/Friends and Business. (This can be tough for many people to handle).

Rolo, tell me more. What do you do for people that are looking for outsourcing. Would be interested in chatting.

Candice 12-13-2004 05:12 AM

when looking for an outsourcing company make sure that you go with the right people.
You'll also need to at least dedicate yourself giving them instructions to make sure they do what you want.

We are in the paysite business ourself, however at some occasions our development team have partnered with other companies - projects have typical been total backend/frontend + strategy. Each situation have been unique, however in 2005 we are planning to bring a more "wide solution" to the table. Still not hourly billed outsourcing - more like a partnership, where partners exploit one another ;-)))

Outsourcing is a fucking bitch.

Right now, I'm working with a group in the PI that seems to be another winner.

Last outsourcing job that did beyond what I expected was Mike in the PI that did the donutcash.com sites.
