How Would The D-Day Invasion be Reported Today? by Alex McRae
June 6, 1944. -NORMANDY- Three hundred French civilians were killed and thousands more wounded today in the first hours of America's invasion of continental Europe. Casualties were heaviest among women and children. Most of the French casualties were the result of the artillery fire from American ships attempting to knock out German fortifications prior to the landing of hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops. Reports from a makeshift hospital in the French town of St. Mere Eglise said the carnage was far worse than the French had anticipated and reaction against the American invasion was running high. "We are dying for no reason," said a Frenchman speaking on condition of anonymity. "Americans can't even shoot straight. I never thought I'd say this, but life was better under Adolph Hitler." The invasion also caused severe environmental damage. American troops, tanks, trucks and machinery destroyed miles of pristine shoreline and thousands of acres of ecologically sensitive wetlands. It was believed that the habitat of the spineless French crab was completely wiped out, threatening the species with extinction. A representative of Greenpeace said his organization, which had tried to stall the invasion for over a year, was appalled at the destruction, but, not surprised. "This is just another example of how the military destroys the environment without a second thought, " said Christine Moanmore. "And it's all about corporate greed." Contacted at his Manhattan condo, a member of the French government-in-exile who abandoned Paris when Hitler invaded said the invasion was based solely on American financial interests. "Everyone knows the President Roosevelt has ties to big beer," said Pierre LeWimp. "Once the German beer industry is conquered, Roosevelt's beer cronies will control the world market and make a fortune." Administration supporters said America's aggressive actions were based in part on the assertions of controversial scientist Albert Einstein, who sent a letter to Roosevelt speculating that the Germans were developing a secret weapon, a so-called "atomic bomb." Such a weapon could produce casualties on a scale never seen before and cause environmental damage that could last for thousands of years. Hitler has denied having such a weapon and international inspectors were unable to locate such weapons even after spending two long weekends in Germany. Shortly after the invasion began reports surfaced that German prisoners had been abused by Americans. Mistreatment of Jews by Germans at so- called "concentration camps" has been rumored but so far, remains unproven. Several thousand Americans died during the first hours of the invasion and French officials are concerned that uncollected corpses pose a public health risk. "The Americans should have planned for this in advance," they said. "It's their mess and we don't intend to clean it up." * * * I'm glad the soldiers who fought and died so bravely on D-Day and throughout World War II did so decades ago. In the 1940s war was hell, but at least our troops didn't have to fight the media back home. |
Bush is no Roosevelt... Hell, he's not even one of his legs...
|
this is a shot at the media not either candidate, I just thought it was intertesting that's all.
|
and a good poke it was... lol...
|
it would have been funny if it wasn't as very good possibility of today's media realities...

"The old literature had a soft voice and a gentle insinuating manner; the new literature will be a thing of loud bawling books, shrieking headlines, and slovenly grammar."
~H.G. Wells, 1893 |
Dan you are absolutely right!!! The success in Iraq is mindboggling - especially the 2 weeks of actual combat. The media was a lot different back in WWII.
As far as Bush not being Rooservelt. You are right. Bush stands up to dictators and those who attack our country. Rooservelt also taught the American people to rely upon gov't, and created the nanny state which continues to haunt this nation today! George Bush continues the handouts.... Maybe they are alike..... |

Al queda - last I checked they were very much still in business, Bin Laden - I understand how tough it must be to catch a guy hooked up to a dialysis machine. I do have to applaud Bush for finally speaking the truth. "The war on terror can not be won" - GW Bush It does not matter how many countries we invade, how many dictators we topple, how many of our boys die to preserve the profitibility of the oil industry. YOU CAN NOT DEFEAT AN ENEMY THAT DEFINES DYING FOR THE CAUSE A VICTORY The "War on Terror" will be as effective as The War on Drugs The War on Poverty etc., etc., etc. All political bullshit. |

[/b][/quote] Jeff I was thinking about this the other day. We all know terrorism is a act, it is not a movement. I think Bush, and most of the country, uses the word "terrorism" to define islamic fundamentalism ( islamic fascism, I have heard it called many things). We can split hairs, but Islamic Fundamentalism is tough for Bush to roll ofhis tounge, and might get some heat from Islamic groups who want to claim discrimination..... I wish Bush would come out and be honest. ISLAM in religion of WAR. It was created by a war lord, to guide other war lords. Islam needs about 2,000 years of liberal enlightenment and humanism before it reaches a normalized state. If you concern is merely a technical one, then you may want to slap down all politicians, reporters, because they all use "war on terror" as if terror was a country. Bush's war on terror is the only reason I am voting for the man. Overthrowing 2 islamic nations in one term of office is fantastic. If Bush can knock out another 2 before the end of next term, I will be pleased. Iran and Syria anyone?? |

Can it be WON...................dont know, but the more we DONT do the MORE they do do. That's why this is VERY important, we have to have someone that will STAND up to the bad guys. Is Kerry That guy? I dont think so, hell he's haveing trouble deciding on weather or not he's for or against it now. He has YET to really explain how he'll handle this war. Will it be like he handle the war he was in, I HOPE not. |
Oh and for the record, I do beleive part of the reason we are at war is OIL.
But it is not to ensure profitability of oil companies.... they will have this no matter what. The free flow of market priced oil is the fuel that runs our entire country. Actually it is the fuel that runs the Western World. Without inexpensive oil, the world economy would collapse. Could you image the chaos?? Do you think American's are going to give up driving? Air Conditionig? Electronics? All items made out of plastic? Oil is the basic building block for almost everything.... from fuel, to synthetic materials like rubber, nylon, etc.... Trust me. The wars we are fighting now for oil pale into comparision of the wars this world might see when oil starts to become scarce. ( if we are not prepaired with alternatives) |
Man, the parrots are noisy today.
The original article is almost clever .. in Freshman creative writing it would probably get a C+ (on a curve). Trying to compare D-Day to anything we've encountered since (with the exception of Afghanistan) is a stretch that only blind (knee-jerk) adherence to a political ideaology could allow one to make - the slightest touch of reality would upset that apple cart. In other words, what the bigots and the simple minded DON'T tell you is that the reason there haven't been "years of liberal enlightenment and humanism" is that we (the West collectively, and the Unites States specifically for 60 year) have prevented it from happening. I, for one, would love to see thriving democracies florish in Iraq, Afghanistan and any number of other countries (both in that region and among some of our allies in the Coalition of the Bought). But methinks that it would be a good idea to actually get at least a toehold of a functioning democracy operational in Iraq and Afghanistan befoe we take on any other nation-building projects. I have no use for the regimes in Damascus or in Terhan (don't like Mullahs, be they Islamic or Pat Robertson) - but there are possible worse alternatives. |
