Hammer 06-25-2004 12:42 PM

Somehow, and no I didn't install it voluntarily, I got the Hooper toolbar on my computer. I finally found the instructions on how to remove it and got the stupid-ass 'don't surf porn' bullshit, but I've still got ads popping up non stop.

I've used Ad Aware and Spybot but still can't get it cleaned up. I've switched to using Netscape for now. If anyone knows a way to fix my problem I would be greatful for the help.

Now it's time for Pushpills to tell me to learn how to use my computer, right?

P.S. I love the new Oprano header graphic. Is that CJ's work? I also applaud the decision to stop showing 6 banners at the top of every page.

Mike AI 06-25-2004 12:48 PM

I would take the time to document all the problems you are having, and what you have had to do to get it fixed. This should include the time spent fixing it, lost time for work, etc....

There is a growing movement amoung attorneys to go after these people with class actions lawsuits. It is important to document all damages so these attorneys will be able to recover on your behalf.

PornoDoggy 06-25-2004 01:16 PM

...and don't forget to include several hundred thousand dollars in emotional distress damages.

Bullshit.

The uninstall process involves downloading an .exe file and running it once. Then you reboot and run it again. Then you get instructions on what files to use regedit to delete.

When you finish this nice easy uninstall process, you get a message congratulating you on successfully uninstalling the piece of shit toolbar and then admonishing you for surfing for porn in the first place.

Like I said, I never voluntarily installed the toolbar in the first place and no one else uses that PC in my office. The rest of our computers are all Macs and I'm the only one that uses the PC. I don't have a clue how it was installed in the first place.

Now, after I successfully removed the toolbar, I'm stuck with these fucking ads popping up every few minutes and although I've used two different adware removal tools, they're still popping up.

And Mike, I haven't lost any projects because it only affects me when I'm using the Explorer browser, but I am ready to sue for pain and suffering.

LOL Anthony how many hours do you think people have spent deleteing the BILLIONS of spams you have sent out.. you should be talking!!!

Hammer the process to undo OUR tool bar is run the auto uninstaller 1 time, it takes 10 seconds to work. The manual steps are for people who don't want to do the automatic removal.
If you claim it takes more then that then you most likely have someone elses toolbar!!

Believe it or not we are not the only company on the planet with one!!!

Hammer 06-25-2004 07:49 PM

I tried system restore and it won't allow me to restore to a time prior to the installation of the FUCKING SHIT!

I also went and bought Spy Bouncer as suggested and ran it, found some problems, fixed them and rebooted. Guess what happened as soon as everything finished loading and my ICQ started up. Yes, you guessed it. A FUCKING AD. I didn't even launch IE or start any programs. As soon as the computer finished booting the ad popped up. After I closed that one, every few minutes another one pops. Right there on my desktop, without anything running and no browsers open.

The thing that is really getting to me is that now my hard drive is constantly being accessed. The computer is sitting here next to me while I'm working on my Mac and the activity light is flashing and I can hear the hard drive working non stop. Every now and then an ad pops up.

Guess I'll be reformatting and reinstalling XP next. Now I can't even avoid the problem by running Netscape.

cj 06-25-2004 08:47 PM

Hammer, it might not be hoopers ... there are several ...

figure out which one has been installed and go to google, search for 'remove blah' and find a message board where its being discussed by lots of people ... they'll tell you to run hijack this and post the log ... then some nice person will give you instructions on what to remove.

Wiseman, you are a fucking liar. How can you STILL say that your toolbar can be removed in 1 step with the auto remove?!?! We have SEVERAL people here who have proved you wrong beyond reasonable doubt ... and not to mention the 47 600 pages at google ...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=...=isearch+remove

But ya know what, I'm just sick of discussing this at adult webmaster level ... You are so blatantly bullshitting to everyone, your webmasters included, so you can do away with paying for traffic eventually. Its a pity your webmasters are so stupid and short sighted as to only see the bucks they make today, not the costs of the future to themselves and others.

Its time for this to go to the next level. I've looked up a few of my old journalist friends yesterday and have yours & hoopers quotes about your spyware, the radio show, Mitnick's team's assessment, and a number of other comments from adult webmasters. If anyone has anything else, comments or quotes, info, experiences etc, please email me.

You want to fuck with everyone else's business and mess with people's computers, then laugh about it afterwards? Then the rest of us have to defend ourselves with the strengths we have ...

Think about this ... just how far are you prepared to go to defend yourself?

There is an updated version of Spybot S&D available at their homepage at

I had Version 1.2 on my system... and checking the "look for program updates"
had given the dialog box stating that no new versions were available, but in fact

Look in your root directory for a .chm file that shouldn't be there. I had something like what you are experiencing a long ways back. Looked all over for what the hell was doing it, found a compressed html file down in my c:\ directory. Killed it and the shit disappeared..

Here are the easy uninstall instructions for the toolbar I was 'infected' with. Wiseman claims it's not Hoopers so I thought maybe Brad or someone would recognize this and claim it as theirs. Just like to know who it is that I should be looking for at Internext.

If you don't want to continue using this page, follow instruction below:
1. Download uninstaller (right click and choose "Save target as.." from pulldown menu

2. Run it

3. Reboot your PC

4. Run it second time

5. Change your start page to "about:blank" in the IE settings (Tools -> Internet Options)

6. Click "Start" -> "Run" -> regedit

7. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\

8. Select key {FF1BF4C7-4E08-4A28-A43F-9D60A9F7A880} and delete it
