Vick started a great thread about top 5 movies and with toplists, we always find oursellves leaving out movies we love but don't immediately think about.

In the tradition of that thread, what filmmakers make you actively seek out even their most obscure of works? Who do you pretty well know is going to entertain/challenge you?

My top 10 filmmakers:

Sam Raimi
Robert Rodrigues
John Waters
Dario Argento
Wes Anderson
Joel And Ethan Coen
Martin Scorsese
Ted V. Mikels
Takashi Miike
Tod Solondz

damn, I could probably list 25 here as well...

Joe Sixpack 04-30-2004 07:07 PM

WTF? Have you not heard of directors like Peter Jackson or Sam Raimi? These guys started out making movies for thousands of dollars and now make movies with budgets of hundreds of millions. Most interesting directors started as independents and many of them chose to stay there, where they have much more artistic freedom.

Film is not about "the big time", it's about making good movies.

it used to be like that in Europe...but things change even there.

TheEnforcer 04-30-2004 09:43 PM

Not really. To me the movie subject matter itself is more important than who is directing it.

venturi 04-30-2004 10:55 PM

I can't believe noone mentioned "The Godfather" of film making: Stanley Kubrick! :wnw:

Do you understand what the role of the director is?

Yes, I do. But just because some director is making a movie about something and he/she made movies I've liked before doesn't mean I'm gonna go see a movie about something I have no interest in. I watch movies to be entertained. No director, no matter how supremely talented they may be, is gonna get me to watch a film where I have zero interest in the subject matter

And if you read that it illustrates my point exactly.
