Grogan and a few others keep urging us to implement a sig whoring policy on Oprano. My question is why?
Is obvious from a poster that its easy money and you get paid to post in a manner of speaking. From a prospective buyers standpoint whats the ROI? You get your banner displayed in a ton of messages? Is that truely a "branding" exercise? When I think of successful branding exercises I think of that annoying Quickbucks ad or more recently Evil Chris's radio ad that borrows elements from that ad and a Purecash one. But then again I may be way off on what I consider a successful branding exercise...what do I know eh? 2 questions Id like to discuss with that being said. 1. Do you really think that you get your money's worth by buying a SIG spot? Why or why not? 2. Do you realize if Oprano embraced this policy there would be an onslaught of posts with smileys as the body of the message just to have a sig view in the thread? So lets hear it Grogan and Brand0n and a few of you others. With that being said Ill add this. If anyone is stupid enough to pay a large amount of money I'd sell my SIG on any board...provided that it was the right amount of money and it was a program I could endorse. |
Gonzo,
I missed one more board, which I will create in few minutes... PURE BULLSHIT, I'm sure sig whores can post their smileys all day long there ;_)) Feel free to move threads which belong to that category. Should w e make it passwd protected? :bjump: |
I have turned sigs off on those boards, which is a shame, because I know there are other webmasters who have something worth while in their sigs, but I will never see it. And the ironic thing is that in the past I have actual bought products/services and made deals from ads I found in sigs...
Now those boards who onced delivered my clicks to their reqular posters, are now delivering nothing... and while my clicks are few, then my clicks have been worth thousands of $ for webmasters who had their products and services in their sigs. |

i pay zero attention to sigs. i pay zero attention to banners. often i test myself and close my eyes and try to remember a sig or banner and i can't remember any sigs that stand out unless it was a funny image or gif (in which case, i can't remember the company/product or service)
the only two banners that come to mind when i think of Oprano is the purecash one and Hoopers. i can't remember even 1 sig. don't listen to people. trust yourself, your plan and your vision. if you opened a restaraunt tomorrow, you would have 1,000,000 suggestions on how to improve it and implementing all of them would create the worst restaraunt on the planet. |
besides... any idea that begins with the notion that Grogan has a valid opinion on anything other than shitty redneck sports cars or impressing pre-teens at the mall is already flawed right from the get go.

anyway... what i was trying to say was that i believe that when everyone jumps on ANY bandwagon in marketing ultimately they devalue and delude any message. this is why marketing weapons and tactics constantly change and evolve. it works when no one is doing it... it stops being effective when everyone is doing it.
i think that if everyone was whoring sigs and as such are training other to ignore them... the the sigs have no value. if the sigs have no value... then for many, posting and participation will have less value. |

back when a 'sig' was nothing more than a bit of text that you had to write every time you posted, it provided me with more clicks than anything i've posted on gfy or here with a big flashy sig ...
sigs are decreasing in effectiveness, why try to jump on something oversaturated now that we invented years prior with more success? something wierd is happening at oprano currently ... for the first time ever, it seems we are trying to 'imitate' instead of 'inovate' ... wassup wit dat? besides, what will brad do if we don't come up with new ideas for him to steal? |

I see his friends reading what's happening on Oprano now with keen interest ;-)))) |

You gots to spell it out sometimes. |
It's hard to regulate and enforce common sense. And there's very little of it among some of the posters on other boards.
The SIG itself is not the issue. It is no different than wearing a shirt or a hat for your employer or other benefactor at a trade show. It's branding and if you get lucky you might score a sale or new client who inquires about it. Like most things in this industry though, there are people who will push a good thing beyond the limit of what is acceptable. When you get people promising thousands of posts with the SIG in a 30 day period for a few hundred bucks, it's out of control. I've never bothered to turn a sig on as I'm pretty much self contained and haven't bothered to whore anything. But I may change that soon as an exercise in curiousity. |
If a poster sounds interesting I will often check out their sig to see what sort of sites they run.. or check out their product.
Not much use doing that on boards where sigs are just a bit of rented ad space. |

Don't use one usually, put an open offer to content folk in there recently.
Sigwhoring is not worth it as income, if you don't own the program. 3-5k for boardwhoring? Please... put in half the effort on adult and make pleanty more than that. |
Sig lines are effective when only some people have them. They have to be unique, stand out. When EVERYONE has a sig, with a big banner and text, it just blends into the background and loses it's effects, IMHO.
So like anything, overuse lowers value. Alex |

I'm not sure how you control something like that. If someone is excessive with smileys or this one word, stupid "what did you eat for breakfast" shit. I say ban them or better yet add 'em, on a ban block and let people vote them off. |
If, I was to let sigs in..onlytext or maybe buttons.
But no more than 120x60. I prefer text over buttons anyday. Only because, you don't want the sig whores to water down a board with pure unless bs..unlike GFY and other boards. |
Sigs.. I have not purchased them because I fear that the poster will make an ass of themselves and then make the company look bad.
I would like to see text only sigs, and fewer ad spaces on the boards. I dislike being 1 of 50 ads on a board. On an advertising note.. I wish people would stop changing their site designs. The clicks to the sponsors always seem to get worse when you redesign the site. You expect that people are going to continue to pay the same ad rate but for half as much traffic? Redesigns are waaaaayy overrated. |
