I think it's fairly safe to say that my chair at the Bush fan club meetings is always empty, but when people make statements like "the new FCC/Clear Channel tactics are reminiscent of Nazi book burnings" they prove just how stupid they are.

Now, if they were to point out how Clear Channel's actions over the last two years are reminiscent of the way some CBS executives grovelled at the feet of Vick's favorite dead president after threats were made to use the FCC to go after his enemies, they would be much closer to the mark - but that's not NEARLY as inflammatory.

the whole episode with Clear Channel is one of the most absurd moments in broadcasting history. they fire a bunch of people, change their programming and proclaim themselves to be pure and holy. They practically pioneered the whole shock jock radio thing and pushed the limits as far as they legally could .. and even further, not to mention the fact that they even hired quite a few Howard Stern wannabe's and made hundreds of millions of dollars from that type of programming. Then, they make themselves a target because of their size and it's all because Bush is a nazi?

Yes, I think Stern would have been fired anyway - the whole obscenity on the airwaves thing has been percolating for a while (it didn't just start with Janet's nipple), and Stern has long been a target of the sort of folks who think that Leave it to Beaver is okay but a bit racey.

I'll try and use small words so you can understand - I don't doubt for a minute that Clear Channel has fired people for disagreeing with GW and done everything in its power to curry favor with the right.

I just don't think Stern was one of them. Stern crying political persecution is a lot like a Sharpton protoge crying racism. Without in any way assuming that the problem doesn't exist, sometimes the source of the charges makes you suspicious.

That's a fair bet too. There has been plenty of FCC nonsense and anti-porn stuff during Democratic administrations too.

Cultural shifts can come from both the bottom and the top though and Bush seems more conservative to me as his term goes on, not less so.

You shouldn't confuse anti-Bush with pro-Kerry. I'm middle-of-the-road and I'd rather take my chances with the liberals next term. Time to make Ashcroft walk the plank.

Another thing. Bush's support is probably precariously thin. I approve of his job as president to date but think the general trend towards conservatism of the administration and the country is not good. I know others who feel this way. I know people who usually vote Republican voting Democrat. I know people who normally don't vote going to vote for Kerry.

That being said, it's only March. There's a long time to go and a lot can happen.
