DSL is being "repaired" and I hate using my lappy near the window to steal the wireless from someone else and have ti reconnect every 3 minutes.

So I got an AOL account for some dialup action. 25 bucks a month....2 chicago access numbers? Sweet!

Can't wait for dsl to be back on, too bad we cant get cable modems here.

:grrr:

dantheman 02-06-2004 02:42 PM

I'm sorry :(

Almighty Colin 02-06-2004 02:49 PM

About a year ago my cable modem provider (*cough* Adelphia) would go down about once a month. So as a backup I would use AOL. Each time, I just ended up turning off the computer in less than 10 minutes.

Life at 56k just isn't worth living.

The amusing part is that 56k used to seem really fast.

dantheman 02-06-2004 02:51 PM

56k kills me, I wont deal with it. BUT I do remember the day I went from 14.4 to 28. it was wonderfull :)

masterp74 02-06-2004 02:55 PM

Medieval times?

Last time I looked at webtv the browser was crap and the connection was slow. Has this improved? Can you use any software with webtv?

Jeese 56k was fast when I think back on my first 300 baud accoustic modem:)

300,1200,2400,9600,14.4,28.8,33.6,56 :)

I had some hayes modems, lots of supra on the bbs, and I loved USR the best.

I'm on it right now too, fucking Verizon is the slowest to get dsl going of any place I have ever seen.

So until my dsl is on, I won't be around much.

sextoyking 02-06-2004 04:34 PM

KK,

My Ex husband had one of those "Atari computers" when they came out - 1983ish? I think it used a cartridge. :okthumb:

The first computer I personally owned was an 8088. After comparing it to the Atari, I never thought I'd need another computer, it was so up to date. :P

Been there, done that. I remember composition books with numbers written down to show where each program on a tape started based on the cassette player's "counter".

First memory upgrade was from 4K to 16K....you had to have skills to program in those days.

And my first modem was not only 300 bps, but it didn't even autodial. It was one notch up from an accoustic coupler....dial the phone, hit the connect switch when the host started to squeal.

Now days I have redundant pipe even at that house. I have both DSL and cable. If one goes out, I switch to the other....at 56K I wouldn't even be able to keep up with the spam for dick pills and viruses in my email.
