what is the plan B?

if you are under 50 and think to answer RETIRE-
think again,
it's not as much fun as you think to do for the rest of your life...

TeenGodFather 12-17-2003 11:03 AM

I'd start selling drugs and underground porn movies on a streetcorner.

Mike AI 12-17-2003 11:09 AM

This is an issue I beleive a lot of people have been thinking about, because it is going to be a reality for many people. Not necessarily on Jan 1st, but probbaly in 2004.

I am going to grow citrus and pecans on my land and set up a street vending operation! haha

Seriously, I am fortunate to have a few options. DirectNIC continues to grow exponentially, and there are some great opportunities there.

I also have a few other side businesses that if the time came open I could devote more to, and would make some nice $$.

In a pinch I could always go take the bar and practice law. Though it would have to be on my terms, or else I would be pretty misserable.... but the good thing about being an attorney is you get to pass your misery on to other people! :D

dantheman 12-17-2003 11:10 AM

I'm in the process of opening up a antique/art gallery here in the downtown area. Should be opened around march 1st(fingers crossed) It'll also be online for all my rich friends to shop :okthumb:

Mike AI 12-17-2003 11:10 AM

Also thought about being a fishing guide with Brad!

This should be a very interesting thread B)

Myself, I'd like to continue along the path I've been on and further my career as an Illusionist

Already to that end I'm considering taking some time to further hone my skills performing for different crowds

At my age and mindset a new career has to be something I throughly enjoy

If economic conditions dictated I could always go back to being a marketing director but that is long, challenging work without a lot of enjoyment

yaelb 12-17-2003 11:28 AM

I believe there is a market for ex pornpusher former military sergeant and airline security personel yemenite cafe in downtown montreal....

Shok 12-17-2003 11:39 AM

actually I got a whole plan. I think the startup will be around $60k or less

this is not internet related

Bestat 12-17-2003 11:48 AM

Well, I own a mainstream business which is doing well enough, and I have been investing both in it and in my retirement accounts with the money I am making here. So if it all went away tomorrow, I would just put that time and energy into the mainstream biz. Plus I am working on a couple mainstream net projects as well, so if they take off even better. :)

A perfect reason to come to Vegas. You can work the booth!

That or come to New Orleans for New Years Party - we could use more entertainment. Billy pulling is pants down and dancing to "We are Family" gets boring 3 years in a row!

I like that strategy John! :rokk:

I think I would be a rock star. :)

ulfie 12-17-2003 12:29 PM

I want to try writing some more. I have an edge in that I've been published before. I haven't written much in the past 2 years but I've recently started again. I have an original idea for a book/movie that I've started working on. I'll bet Serge will never see it because it involves football. :)

Could always go back to the mundane world of programming/design as well. Loved programming, hated working for idiots.

My other gig is ebay. I'm getting pretty good at selling on there and I would like to find something unique to sell on there that I could repeat over and over again. My neighbor makes his living selling cheap clocks on ebay. He's going to get hit with a copyright infringement suit soon if he isn't careful. He rips off logos like chevy, bmw, porsche, ford, etc. and puts them on clocks. His attitude is that he's going to do it until someone makes him stop. I have a feeling he's going to get a wake up call soon but then again he's been doing it for 5 years and no one has bothered him yet.

BradShaw 12-17-2003 12:38 PM

If the biz ended January first my concern would not be income, it would be boredom and driving my new wife crazy. I have saved up a nice stash over the years.

I would love to buy a house in cabo, and just fish, and relax. But do not think my wife would be too keen on that. So I would probably get into some real estate ventures, and possibly go to law school.

In reality though, this business is not going to just dissappear one day. Many eggs, in many baskets. If all I did was sell fresh photos, I would be living in a trailer these days.

About Vegas -
Putting 2 silk handkerchiefs knotted together down a woman's shirt and then pulling them out with a bra attached between the silks isn't as impressive when most of the women there aren't wearing a shirt :D or maybe it would be

The S&M/B&D crowd might not be impressed with me escaping from chains and locks - they'd probably want me to stay restrained he he he

Actually one of the things I'm considering is renting a place in the French Quarter or Faubourg Marigny (want to be walking distance to Jackson Square) and performing as a street magician in Jackson Square for 6 months to a year

That will give me the opportunity to further hone my skills (mostly presentation - work psychologically for bigger, stronger reactions) with different crowds - kind of along the lines of what David Blaine did - only he did it in New York

Of course the move after that is to get more exposure

Billy pulling down his pants and dancing to "We are Family" is such a great tradition - worth it just to see Billy carrying on the full moon tradition :yowsa:

As with alot of people who posted here, I'd be doing my mainstream stuff as well....brick and mortar and also Internet related. I think I'd die if I couldn't do at least SOMETHING internet related...hahaha

I already have a brick and mortar going (mainstream) and it's doing alright....something I love doing which is important.

I also agree that it won't disappear overnight....or at all....it will just morph into something different. ;)

Hooper 12-17-2003 12:44 PM

i think i'd be sad, the adult biz has been such a great learning environment.

but realistically i dont see it going away, just evolving.. and adult webmasters are like cockroaches... we just go skittering across the floor to the next meal ticket. look at that atherton character. he's running the paris hilton scam right now after losing many many merchant accounts. i hear he's doing upwards of 8000 joins a day right now and he's billing each customer 200 bucks. fuckers making 1.6mil a day right now. he'll get shut down.. and find another way to make a quickbuck (no pun intended)

i personally have a software biz that is already making millions and a wine distributorship that is doing very well also, so i'm not worried about flipping burgers for a living.

KRL 12-17-2003 01:04 PM

Well I've got a large portfolio of domains acquired now. Half adult, half mainstream.

2004 forward I'm putting more focus on mainstream anyway. That's were the big money has always been and will always be if you know how to work it well.

Also working on a lot of technology projects.

Adult's always been just a side biz for me over the past 20 years, so nothing really changing in that respect. I've always believed in staying diversified.

Carrie 12-17-2003 01:05 PM

I might finally get around to updating all of my personal and mainstream sites. They need it badly.
I've actually been slowly getting rid of my online mainstream biz - hosting. I stopped taking new clients a while ago and now am just waiting for my current clients to either outgrow me or not need hosting anymore. Only have a few left. I'm just tired of supporting them.

Most likely I'd pull out my clay and start selling miniatures on eBay. Might write up a few more ebooks and sell those as well - people can't get enough how-to info!

Peaches 12-17-2003 03:37 PM

I'd get a RE license (which is in the works already) and buy and sell property here in the hills where the values are exploding. B)

Now, IF the porn biz ever goes away, we still have to agree to have conventions once or twice a year to catch up with everyone. :P

Sharpie 12-17-2003 03:38 PM

Well, I already have a headstart....... at retiring, with toys to play with.

I still have my real estate license, but selling R.E. is not as much fun as it was in the 70s. I have always bought and sold real estate..... if done correctly, it's the best investment you can make. AT ONE TIME, I had 35 rental units, but not up for that anymore. I went into 2003 owning 4 properties, with any luck, I will end it, only owning two. whether Adult hold up or not - I will always invest in Real Estate - Adult just allows me to buy bigger Real estate.....

I am busy learning to run my boat and learning to fish all over again. You know what BOAT stands for don't you? Bring On Another Thousand :-)

LadyMischief 12-17-2003 07:44 PM

I'm a professional mainstream photographer as well as doing adult-related stuff, so I think I'd just shift my focus back to mainstream stuff and push it. The money is there I just prefer the adult stuff.... It's a much less competative environment, amazingly enough.

Either that or start doing mainstream graphic design..

if the porn industry disappeared in jan i'd be fine. i really havent made a living out of this so i've had to keep jobs while putting myself through school. i'd finish up my degree's then go off to grad school. the only thing that would really kick me in the ass would be trying to finance ideas for patents and a mainstream projects. im still young though(22) so it wouldn't be a total set back :gbounce:
