Time Warner is planning to offer its vast customer base Voice-Over-IP phone calling via its cable and Internet networks in conjunction with MCI and Sprint.
Instead of plugging your phones into regular phone line jacks, you'll just hook them into your cable connection. They're planning to offer unlimited local and long distance phone calling throughout the US for about $39.95 per month. |
Voice over IP is going to be HUGE..... the long distance industry is worth like 13-15 billion a year.
|
I predicted this when Roadrunner came out.
Using household toon name to brand a line, brilliant. Warner Bros studio is just up the road, in Burbank, drove by it yesterday... I remember trying to get roadrunner like 3 years ago, fuckers told me i didnt live close enough! hahah Last edited by Fletch XXX at Dec 9 2003, 09:25 AM |

Yeah it is going to be huge but I think that number is going to be cannibalized. Between VoIP and cellphones you can expect that number to be halfed. The major phone companies have been quaking in their boots for the past 5 years over this. Now that the FCC has seemed to clear the way for the companies fee wise it's going to be bloody.

That market is now over 1.5 Billion cell phone users worldwide spending I'm sure at least $50 per month per user, if not more. So that market is over $75 Billion PER MONTH! About $900 Billion PER YEAR! No wonder they can afford to run huge 1 page newspaper ads all over the place. LOL |
Its funny when I grew up the only choice you had for local and long distance was one single company. AT&T controlled everything top to bottom for telecom.
And remember those long distance rates. LOL. AT&T had that scam monopoly running for decades. Wonder how much we all got reamed for over all that time, when it could have been so much cheaper had the govt. stepped in and allowed competition. FUCKERS!! :kapow: Last edited by KRL at Dec 9 2003, 01:01 PM |

I get phone service through my cable (Cox); but it's plugged into normal phone lines here in the house. It's out at the switch where plugging it into the cable line takes place.
|
Unfortunately Time Warner has the Midas "Shit" Touch.... everything they touch turns to utter crap. I'd go with anyone else but TW - no matter WHO else. They top my list of WORST public utility services EVER. <_<
The whole broadband phone thing looks interesting though. I know I'm sick of paying Verizon (our local company) out the nose for everything. |
Question:
I have cable internet and digital cable television. Only real problem I have is when the thing goes down, no tv and no internet. Does it do this also to phone if you use cable phone lines? I hate when one goes out so does the other. it would totally blow to be without internet, tv, and phone while Adelphia jerks itself off while repairs are being done. does this ever interrupt service like with cable tv and internet? ive had adelphia go down for like 3 hours in a day, and its rather annoying when it does since it disables everything, tv as well as outside communication. |
Voip is going to get even bigger down the road.
We are looking at starting our own voip phone company right now, will see how it turns out. I have been using packet8.net for months and the call quality, voice mail, features for $20.00 per month can't be beat. Unlimited calls to anywhere in the usa / canada. We ship the ata (voice) adapters to employees overseas, and I just dial a local portland # to call them :) Same if they want to call me. All that anyone needs to use these anywhere in the world is a broadband connection, i.e. dsl, cable, wireless network, t-1's, etc. voice mail can be checked from anywhere, and you can also have your voice mail sent to your email box, i think in wav or some file. |
Fletch,
if you get rid of your Pots (regular phone line) and just use VOIP, i.e. packet8.net or vonage.com, if your power or net connection goes down, no phone :( but if you have a cell or keep 1 pots line as backup, your cool. |

Wow, forgot about that gimmick too. Imagine that you weren't allowed to own a phone, you had to rent it every month. Fucking AT&T literally raped America for 50 years with all their tactics. |

Krl,
well it's $20.00 per voip line. I just have a few of these lines for testing, etc. We didn't change out any of our biz/pots lines yet :) soon.... |
We've implemented Vonage.com out at the girl ranch and have been very happy with it so far, we also picked up their fax service.

In those days, they had invented and patented the telephone (Bell Telephone Co.). They had also had to string lines throughout the entire country and wire up every house. They had to build and install all of the switches, and put up all the telephone poles, hire all of the operators to do all the switching by hand, etc, etc, etc,.....They had to build an entire infrastructore from scratch, and it was all THEIR technology. Raping America? That's a little strong KRL...think about it from their prospective |

That cant be right, last i heard it was something like 600 million cell phone users |

LOL oh.. and you forgot to mention all the phone poles they had to install! ;) |
Our phone/cable/internet go down independently and it doesn't affect the other two services. Only very *very* rarely do all three go down, and in that case the priority is to get the phone working again as fast as possible, in case someone needs to call 911.
But yeah, quite often our internet will burp for 20 minutes or so and we can still watch cable or make phone calls. |

I used to do cable modem installs, first for TW on their beta test over 5 years ago. I have worked for various companies installing cable/DSL, and what it really comes down to is the area that you are in. In Cent. NY, TW had the best system hands down. The calbe in Ft. Lauderdale was good in some spots, bad in others, as was the DSL. Over all, in So. FL, Bell South has the better system. In Hampton Roads, VA, Verizon sucks ass, Cox is king here. We have phone over cable, it is digital done with a NIU (Network Interface Unit) using ATM protocol. The cable goes from the tap to the NIU first then on form there to your modem and TV. So all you do is run normal phone wire from Cable NIU to Phone NIU and tie into your house lines there. If the phone part of the cable goes down, it is priority one to be repaired. The FCC can look at the system stats any time they want, and if you have more than something like a 98% up time on your lines over all then you get to keep your lic. Vioce over IP is a little different. With the right stuff, you can do that over just about any net connection. |
Fast forward a couple of years to when AOL/Time Warner own the entire porn industry as well as the monopoly on communication ... 'click here to enter the adult section' --> 'click here to charge this website subscription to your phone'
if anyone makes it through the cc processing cull, there's going to be lots of pornographers, who have been here since day 1 and think that's enough, who are going to be driven out of business by big companies who can solve our major issues with the click of their fingers ... I hate aol. |

Ah, the joys of living in a town that has it's own phone, DSL and cable service. :P
(though in all fairness, even though they've brought the cable to the mountain I live on, I daresay they'd not be pleased if I asked them to bring it to the house. I'm happy with DirecTV. B) ) |

yes but who has a bigger profit margin to move their pricing when the market price war starts? |
our company is also using VOIP and in a year time....lots of companies will be using this system.... :okthumb:

I worked at 2 telecom companies.
The worldwide telecom market is worth 1.2 trillion a year. |
What about Mo-blogging. I can add updates to my site with a simple call on the cell. In a month there will be audio to text blogging, so no need to be a good writer.. Audblog.com right now gives you (12)- 4 min. calls for $3.00 I'm going to start doing Audio DVD Reviews . Sure beats reading.
