America Online is offering a PC, monitor and color printer for $299 to subscribers who sign up for its Internet service for one year, the latest effort by the company to prop up its subscriber base.

The Internet service provider launched a Web site, 299pcdeal.com, to promote the offer.

The "new AOL Optimized PC" is built by Systemax, a Port Washington, N.Y.-based PC maker. The PCs include a 1.7GHz Intel Celeron, 256MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. They come preloaded with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Sun Microsystem's StarOffice software.

An AOL representative was unavailable to comment late Wednesday.

The move follows AOL's announcement that it plans to launch a new discount Internet access service to combat the growing threat from both cheaper alternatives and speedier broadband offers. The stripped-down service is expected to launch in early 2004 for $9.95 a month and to offer fewer of the bells and whistles found on AOL's $23.90 a month service, according to a source close to the company.

For the past two quarters, AOL has watched the number of its core dial-up subscribers slip as members have defected to faster broadband services or to cheaper discount ISPs such as United Online 's NetZero and Juno.

In the last quarter, AOL lost 846,000 members, some of them to broadband or discount dial-up ISPs. The bulk of the lost members were people using AOL at discount prices who were no longer counted as full-paying members.

I thought it was mandatory to mention Mitnick in your threads, regardless of what they are about.

My bad. ;)

I could see how you would think that, but it's not. It's OK, I'm sure all you did here was to speed up the inevitable.

Believe me, the only reason I added the disclaimer at the top, is because I am just as sick as everyone else about hearing the same old regurgitated crap over and over again.

You can buy a computer at Dell, 2.40 ghz, 256 RAM and 40 gig hard drive, 17 inch monitor for $449 and printers are practically given away these days. Getting a Dell and the $9.95 AOL service would actually be less expensive and you wouldn't be stuck with an "AOL" computer. :)

They would have done better giving the computer for free with the $23.90 a month 12 month commitment or the $299 with the $9.95 option.

edited to make a little more sense.

You're right, Peaches. I think that this deal is aimed towards those who don't already have a PC, and want to get online for the first time. $299 sounds good, until you calculate the price of internet usage on top.

Then, there is the fact that you have to admit you're using AOL.

hmm.. this makes no sense... why would you promote the offer on a website... when you are trying to get "new" internet users???

wouldn't TV, Newspapers, Magazines.. radio... etc.. be much more productive mediums???

That's what happens when a large company doesn't hire any Asians, Greg. No one can think his/her way out of a wet paper bag
