Veterans day 11-14-2003 10:45 PM

what do you think about that quiet? is it just advertising or a takeover? :rokk:

Carrie 11-14-2003 10:48 PM

Assimilation at its finest.
No matter where you go, there's the baby-shit green.

I can't even imagine the amount of $$ this is costing ADS for the week, but boy it's sure causing a stir so it's worth every penny and then some.

stocktrader23 11-14-2003 10:51 PM

Aside from that, GFY is down.

Veterans day 11-14-2003 10:57 PM

stocktrader, you have migrated? Whats up :rokk:

Toolz 11-14-2003 10:57 PM

muhahahahaha

Or plan is working exactly as planned :)

JayJay 11-14-2003 10:57 PM

Says brought to you "TODAY" by ADS
I'm guessing its only for a day?

Soul_Rebel 11-14-2003 11:01 PM

i think it's a promo

smart one

Soul_Rebel 11-14-2003 11:03 PM

i just hope oprano will keep these colors and wont return to the perestroika skin :D

cherrylula 11-14-2003 11:18 PM

This is somewhat annoying...how far does the advertising need to go?

I suppose all one can do is abstain from the boards to avoid it.

:(

Carrie 11-14-2003 11:28 PM

I'm wondering how many more boards are going to change over the weekend.
And GFY really went all-out... the post icons are ADS saucers, there's an ADS ad in every third post, the background is different, the post buttons have saucers in them...
Got some hot-headed folks over there who are NOT happy about having their names associated with that 3rd-post-advertisement thing.

[Labret] 11-14-2003 11:30 PM

All this for a fucking dialer?

Dialers suck. They rank just above spammers on my list of people I would like to eviscerate.

cherrylula 11-14-2003 11:32 PM

Why does it seem like the mentality of webmaster advertising lately has to do with pissing people off with annoying ads, sounds, and now entire site branding?

Does it actually work?

I'd say it's working well... everyone's talking about it.
It's kinda like a new version of "Shock And Awe"...

Talk is one thing, I was referring to profits.

I'm not one to jump on in your face advertising, but maybe some do. I tend to do the opposite of most though, so my opinion might not be the best to judge the end result.

i'm in full agreement with you cherry.

Carrie 11-14-2003 11:52 PM

I agree Cherry. There's advertising, then there's shoving it down your throat - but you have to admit this does break new ground and is one hell of an idea.

Months from now when people need a dialer, it's nearly guaranteed that ADS will be the first one they think of thanks to this.

cherrylula 11-14-2003 11:56 PM

Tell ya what...

The only thing this trend has done for me is let me know who not to promote while this crazy ad stuff is going on.

You'd be amazed.

Care to elaborate on why you think they suck? That's a difficult post to debate with you but if you'd like to post some reasons I'd be more than happy to give you the positives to them.

He's right, dialers are just barely a step above spammers. They are most often used to bill people without the people being fully aware that they are being billed with blind links and forced downloads all to make a scamming webmaster a quick buck, but then most of the people in this biz don't give a fuck about any sort of ethics. They're all generally willing to make money off others at virtually any cost.

Just show me the website that is worth 7 dollars a minute. Better yet, show me one that is even worth a buck a minute.

You and quiet are in the top 1% of webmasters over there. I bet for every 1 that bitches about it there are ten pissing themselves to sign up.

Reminds me of the old Bradshaw analogy, for every person that he pisses off there are ten that sign up to his programs

Okay #1 misconception, the sites do not cost $7 a minute to access, the highest rates are in the UK and they run $1.70 a minute for access, most countries fall between .10-.30 a minute for access making the average 8-10 minute call cheaper than a trial for most surfers.

#2. There are MANY MANY regulations on dialers, there's no auto-installing, there's call timers on the desktop with a calculator showing how much the user has spent.

Dialers have gotten a bad rap in the past, but people have raped credit cards just as hard if not HARDER. Need I remind anyone of the programs that billed surfers over $140 for a "free" trial. The dialers of today are nothing like the wild west dialers that used to run rampant on the Internet, they're highly regulated and an effective means to garner income from countries with less than ideal credit card solutions.

dirtyone 11-15-2003 01:41 AM

My understanding is that dialers are much more prevalent in European and other countries than in the US. It's the auto installing, un-installable, overcharging bastards that have given them a bad name here.

Absolutely right, and those bastards have all been fined by the telcos outta biz.

Yeah right. And all the spam I get every day is from me opting in.

Toolz the site looks great !

I still cannot get over all the crybabies at GFY.. I mean if you in this business why not have your own sites in your sig ?? IF you have to sell you sig to make money, maybe you should re-think your future.

Just my two cents !

KRL 11-15-2003 02:12 AM

Hi Serge, Quiet and all the GFY crew here!

I must say, it looks so much better here then the way the colors are twisting our eyes on GFY.

I predict Oprano is going to grab a lot of market share from GFY thanks to this campaign.

Hmmm, I think I'll save my 10,000 th GFY post for another week.
