Anybody know what it is ?? Is it dangerous ?? How do you know what kind of snake is bad ?? See this is a lot more fun then watching the Saints play ! Last edited by Billy at Sep 7 2003, 05:12 PM |
If it has a thick body, and a triangle shaped head, it is poisonous generally. Looks like a cottonmouth to me (cant tell much from the head sideways)
|
On second thought, looks like a rat snake.

Maybe these will help.. I hope so !

Yeah it could be just a rat snake, it does not look poisoness by shape of head.
Glad you are keeping NO safe Billy!! Saints suck ass - going to be a LONG year.... |
We have a rat snake that has come to visit for the last couple of years. It's darker than yours, but looks similar:

Heck that's a BIG snake !!
Peaches he was in the sand under some wood, maybe he needed a bath. Mike.. I talked to Tim The Shorts, the outdoor expert in this area and he said in his opinion its a water moccasin. |
Water Moccisan is a Cotton Mouth - same thing.
Its a rat snake, or a water snake - do not think it is posioness - not that you should go pet it. |

The water moccasins I've seen, and thankfully, it's been few (one was in the lake a couple of summers ago) had markings on them - they weren't as solid. Here's a link I found But better safe than sorry is MY personal rule with snakes. :okthumb: |
bwaaah piffffle Billy...
Call that a snake??.. here's some good snakes we have running around here http://www.reptilegardens.com/reptile/topten.html Closer to home, many people think the Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) and the Copperhead (Agkistrodon sp.) are very deadly. They are not, quite the opposite in fact. The maximum amount of venom a Cottonmouth can deliver is just barely enough to kill a single person. The Copperhead is even less deadly, even untreated, a Copperhead bite causes death in considerably less than 1% of the bites. Keep in mind that these two snakes rarely deliver anything close to their maximum dosage. We let the kids keep those cottonmouth things for pets ;-)) Btw.. a spade fixes all things snake like if they start eating the pets! |
All I know is when I picked up the piece of plywood and saw the snake looking at me I dropped it so fast... I wanted no part of him and I was hoping he wanted no part of me : )
You can keep all those other snakes down under, I will not complain ! Mike.. you ever see anything like that in your back yard ?? |

Looks like a water moccasin as mentioned above.
In high school I had a little snake farm as a business to raise some extra dough for drugs, mainly pythons and boa constrictors...I've been wanting to get back into it (snakes, not drugs). It's quite lucrative these days as pythons are becoming popular pets, security animals and vermin chasers.... Back in the mid to late 80's, I was getting $150-175 per egg on the Pythons and about 45-50 on the boa constrictors. My biggest python was a burmese I named Cleopatra...she used to sleep in a huge fish tank in my bedroom and one night, she got out and crawled out of my room and into my father's room...he's not a fan od snakes and let out the most blood curdling scream I'd ever heard.....damned if he didn't scare my poor snake..... Cleoptra also acted as the anti-theft device in my car......sadly, the snake was too smart and got out of her tank one night and crawled outside and froze to death..... Billy, I don't know if this snake is poisonus, but as a general precaution,
put butt plug, as those creatures always look for the hole to crawl in ;-))) |
All though it looks like a macossin (sp?) I'm pretty sure its a rat a snake.
I had an incident about 3 years ago at my bday party that sent all the guests running. Apparently a mother rat snake got into the house and nested and laid eggs......oh about 15 or 20 of them. I guess they all hatched and came out to join the party. Someone screamed because there was a snake in the bathroom, when everyone turned to see what was going on, there was another in the corner, then another then another and so on. We ended up pulling about 16 snakes out of the house that night before heading to the hotel :D |

It's a GAY snake !! Thanks Buff, without you we would all continue to be confused ! |
OK.. in an effort to keep Oprano safe I have researched what kind of snake I found..
Well according to the people at the Nature center I found a Yellow Belly Water Snake. http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetol...ectaNewest.jpg At least I can walk around my yard feeling a little better ! |
OMG! I am so glad I never find any snakes crawling around my yard here in Canada.
How big is that snake Billy? |
Billy,
Two ways to tell poisonous from non are looking at the eyes and the tails. A poisonous snake will have oval 'cats eye' whereas non will have round pupil. The underside scales near tip of tail on non's will be 'broken' (have two parts) whereas the poisonous variety will appear whole/unbroken. Downside of both of these is that you have to be close enough to see... This is where hourly wage employees and interns come in... :agrin: |

Billy, on 3rd look it appears to be a trouser snake. Maybe you can loan it your banana hammock with the sequins.

<----------MAJOR snake phobic, was bitten by a mocassin as a kid and I had to squint to pass by the pictures here. I cannot even see a pic or TV piece or anything.....and don't suggest I handle them to get over phobia, that don't work....
Ewww, heebie jeebies...thats why I have a lawn service....I have 0% tolerance. They literally scare me to potential death. |
I've only seen water moccasins in the water, but it looks like it could be one. There were two reasons I didn't move to Florida. Spiders and snakes! Every time I visited my sister who lived near an orange grove, I encountered coral snakes. When I swam in the lakes, I saw water moccasins. I remember visiting relatives for the first time in the wonderful state of Florida. My luggage had been lost, so I put on a pair of my sisters running shoes and I felt something moving in the toe of my shoe. I took off the shoe, and out came the biggest spider I have ever seen in my life. I almost passed out with fright.
I will take snakes any day of the week! Yesterday I made the mistake of looking at the spider pictures at this location. http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.p...threadid=172455 Now I'm looking at snakes. Take a look at those spiders. They look much scarier than these snakes. |

LOL Billy sweetie, Anything less than 7 inches we classify as a "worm". Sabby:) |

Reminds me of an old Jerry Clower joke. Jerry and his buddy got ribbed into unknowingly going into a snake handling church one sunday. When they broke out the snakes and started dancing around and passing them out, Jerry leans over to his buddy and says "where's the backdoor in this place". His buddy responds "they dont have one". To which Jerry replies "where you reckon they want one?". |
How far from the water do you live Billy? Most cottonmouths wont nest far away from it... you might have a stray but its pretty unlikely.
I'd leave it alone really, it will keep the other pestilent critters away from your house. Our yard guys killed a couple kings last summer and I was furious... they are one sure way to keep rattlers away from your house. |
KK I live in the swamps of course I live near water : )
The people told me he was a good sanke and I should let him live to keep me safe.. so as long as he stays on his side of the yard I will be ok : ) Sabby... "Anything less than 7 inches we classify as a "worm"." So does that mean that anything over 7 inches is a "pole" ?? Just wondering : ) |
And what if it's not all that long, but really wide with a lot of girth?
What does that make it? A grub? |
