Asteroid Heading for Earth, May Hit in 2014
Tue Sep 2, 5:13 AM ET Add Science - Reuters to My Yahoo!

LONDON (Reuters) - A giant asteroid is heading for Earth and could hit in 2014, U.S. astronomers have warned British space monitors.

Asteroid "2003 QQ47" will be closely monitored over the next two months. Its potential strike date is March 21, 2014, but astronomers say that any risk of impact is likely to decrease as further data is gathered.

On impact, it could have the effect of 20 million Hiroshima atomic bombs, a spokesman for the British government's Near Earth Object Information Center told BBC radio.

as long as it takes Lensman who owes me money,
it's OK...
let's see if $1000 he owes can protect him from asteroid
;-))))

That's ok. I learned on the Discovery channel over the weekend that Yellowstone Park is ground zero for the largest "super volcano". Apparently (for all those excited in such details -- yeah right) super vocanos don't form those normal cones we're used to seeing, they form deep depressions. The one in Yellowstone is so wide it can only be detected from space. Apparently this thing has a 600,000-800,000 year cycle with three previous eruptions. The last time it erupted was, yep, 600,000 years ago, so we're due. LOL Or to put it more accurately they said it could happen anywhere between 200,000 years from now or tomorrow. Oh and pretty much such an explosion wouldn't just make the US dead, but would destroy all life on the planet.

To make matters worse, our Earth is going to be swallowed up by an engorged large sun in 10 million years! We're all doomed! :hic:

Great - and right after I get my AARP card. :(

JR 09-02-2003 12:11 PM

they said on the news that they calculate the odds of the asteroid hitting the earth to be at about 1:900,000 or so.

i thought those were sucky odds. time to move off this rock.

JR 09-02-2003 12:14 PM

depressing when the odds of the planet getting destroyed by an asteriod are 10-100 times better than some sloppy fuck winning the Powerball Lottery.

:(

And everybody is all worried about global warming, guns and animal rights.

Asteroids don't kill people. Asteroids kill dinosaurs.

Now they even have a picture of what it's gonna look like........

There's some irony. The Mayan calander stops. The aliens return. Wipe us out, leaving the roaches. Two years later the asteroid comes and kills the aliens. The roaches take off in their ships.

Yeah, I like it! Let's run with that!
