Almighty Colin 06-13-2003 05:36 AM

Just want to know if I'm the only that never does.

Torone 06-13-2003 05:48 AM

I'm on cable, so mine gets turned off whenever it's not in use...

Timon 06-13-2003 05:54 AM

What does one gain from turning it off? Just delays you an hour in the morning downloading all your spam ;-)

Forest 06-13-2003 06:07 AM

nope

always on

restart 1x a day though

Lisa 06-13-2003 07:17 AM

yeah its the thing you press every month or so when the computer starts to go a bit funny ... you know that black screen that comes up for a second before windows restarts? that's the off position ... :biglaugh:

Lisa 06-13-2003 07:35 AM

Oh...

I just thought that was a long blink... :gbounce:

MikeW 06-13-2003 07:56 AM

all my machines run 24/7 unless I go away for more than a day

Almighty Colin 06-13-2003 08:27 AM

sarettah 06-13-2003 08:32 AM

I have always done it...

Yup. Nuclear power plant. :okthumb:

None of that nasty coal burning in my neighborhood.

Peaches 06-13-2003 02:48 PM

I turn both of my computers off at night AND I turn my TV off even if I'm going out to sit on the porch.

No way. 8 hours of power usage for a PC and monitor compressed into a few seconds of boot time? That would trip your breakers.

Yup - us too. Our puppy likes to watch cartoons (he gets especially excited for SpongeBob Square Pants - lol) so we leave it on when we go out. He just sits there in his bean bag chair, watching like any other kid.

Well like I said, I turn off my monitor :)

But, the power needed at startup to get the disk rolling and all that, takes more than leaving the cpu up....

It is also, imo, easier on the equipment....

Yeah, but the power needed to boot CAN"T be more than the power to keep your computer on for 8 hours, probably not even 10 minutes worth I'd bet.

laura99 06-13-2003 04:15 PM

Well I used to have to shut it down all the damn time, reboot a couple times a day when I was using win ME. But I switched to XP and now it seems like I never have to shut it off.

TheEnforcer 06-13-2003 05:16 PM

BTW- for cable modem users like Torone that DO turn off their computer at night. If I remember correctly unless you completely disconnect your modem you are leaving your computer vulnerable.

Soul_Rebel 06-13-2003 07:24 PM

never, it's a sin

Nope! When your computer is off, it is off. I probably shouldn't worry about hackers...I have a router and two software firewalls; but the wear and tear on the hard drives and fans is cut significantly. My 'D' drive was installed in '99; and it's still going great.

Back in the day, it was better to leave them on because drives could fail to spin up and because it took a long time for them to boot, anyhow. Check the specs on today's drives...they hardly use any power; and they usually spin down after awhile to save energy.

Is that what that button is? I just let mine reboot whenever I'm overloaded which is at least once or twice a day.

Multi-tasking does it every time.

The modem itself could be vunerable to certain attacks but generally not.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't exactly sure how vulnerable it leaves you but if I turn my computer off I make sure to fully unplug my modem. Just being cautious I guess.

Hooper 06-13-2003 10:54 PM

I'm blessed. I use nothing but mac. It turns itself off when i'm not using it. turns itself back on as soon as i sit down at it and move the mouse (takes about 2 seconds to come out of sleep)

My pc's had that sleep feature... but about 90% of the time it didnt work, didnt come back up, crashed going down, and when it did work it took 2-3 minutes to really get up and down anyways.

Hell Puppy 06-13-2003 11:04 PM

My desktops stay up constantly. And they're usually doing something. <_<

Laptops get shut off when I'm done, usually because I bag 'em so they'll be ready to grab and go.

I used to run stacks of machines for a BBS 24/7, nothing special about them, just normal PC hardware. They ran great for years and years at a time.

If you run good hardware and keep your power clean, they'll last. A UPS is very important, even if you dont want them to reboot when power blinks, it'll keep the power clean and consistent. In the summer, power is often fluctuating horribly due to air conditioners and such. You may not see it in the lights, but if you put a device on that can monitor it, you may be surprised. I have a huge panamax system on my home theater, and it's amazing to watch how bad the power twitchs all day and night long during the summer. Those little brown downs are very bad for electronic gear.

I use my main box as a webserver and mail server, so it has to stay up :)

Have all the sleep features, power control features shut down... A fairly good UPS w/power filter on it, not quite big enough for the box and the monitor I have on it.... Had a new wire put in a year or so ago with an isolated ground...... Behind a physical firewall and a software firewall..

Power has been pretty good in the 3 years I have lived in this house. Haven't seen it go brown... Only 2 or 3 outages I can recall.

The other 2 boxes are on the same wire but no UPS's on them at this point.... In case of storms etc, they get shut down...

The server (which is also my main PC.. need to go put up a box for strictly server one of these days) never gets shut down unless absolutely necessary...

I host my navy alumni site off of it for them and some of the older guys get very upset when they can't get to the site....lololol...

Vulnerable to what? A guy who is willing to spend 2 weeks figuring out to break into your PC to find there's nothing but a bunch of stale porn and lame video games?

I invite the entire 3rd porn world to waste his time on that ;-))

Hehe that's classic.

I leave my pc on, I was told by my buddy AJ who is a computer tech genius that the bootup power does take disproportionate amount of juice and more wear and tear, so it's best bet to leave your pc on all the time. I sometimes turn my monitor off even thouh I have powersaver on the monitor after an hour of inactivity.

Powersaver on pc, just like Hooper I have tried it on 3 machines now, there's alwasy some kind of problem, crash or other goofiness so I only use it for monitor; that's where most of the power goes to anyway, cpu is negligible usage.

I used to leave the Tv running for extended periods of time, but I find it easier to focus on work when tv is off.

The computer itself is useful to certain people. You could become part of a terrorist network and not even know it.

I can relate to that. (Not the Mac part, never used one in my life :P
The Windows sleep mode I can relate to. A total disaster waiting to happen. Every other time one of my systems would go into sleep mode... crash city. Finally gave up and disabled it on all systems.

Good concept though. If Microsoft ever gets a sleep mode that works good, I'd use it.

:okthumb:

Hell Puppy 06-14-2003 10:31 PM

Using power saver settings to power down the monitor is worthwhile. But sleep mode is just plain and simply broken even in XP.

It somewhat works for me but for some reason the Wi-Fi doesn't come back up when it comes out of sleep mode making me to have to reboot, which kind of defeats the purpose of leaving it on in the first place...

Just the opposite here. If I shut'r down at night, in the morning it acts all stupid on startup.

But I've always left the puter on anyways. Like someone else said, all you get is time wasted in the morning downloading 900 spams. I like my system on, it doesn't cost all that much extra to have it on and it saves me a lot of time.

And since my tv doesn't recieve emails or ICQ's, I shut it the hell off when I leave the house.
