Wow
I just got back from my first workout (I have a potbelly and flabby thighs to get rid of and into shape) and I'm sore as hell....but my wife is half dead, so at least I'm still alive...but doing this 3-4 times per week is going to kill me...

how do you guys who work out do it? I assume it gets easier once you get going? :)

but, I have to get back into shape so I can do a followup shoot for pruve ;)))

ooh, tomorrow: Yoga....

Several years ago, I went to the gym and had a free personal trainer for 4 sessions. Honest to goodness, the day after the first session, I couldn't even get up and down the stairs - I was a freaking invalid! :zoinks: The next session we did the arms - I could barely drive home :(

I decided then and there - I'd rather be fat than in pain. :yowsa:

Mike AI 05-26-2003 12:45 AM

Yeah personal trainers tend to push to hard too soon - especially for newbies.... should take 2 weeks to break in... if not many people give up.

My motto... no pain... no pain....

:D

you will survive. it takes a 3-4-5 times for your muscles to adapt to the new reality and added stress on them depending on hydration, quality/quantiy of sleep and diet.

Yoga is excellent too! i dont think anyone can possibly appreciate what it means to be limber and flexible until you have been there and lost it. or how nice it is, when all the little aches and pains start to go away. its also great for your spine, especially your lower back and excellent for general injury prevention.

everytime i stop karate i really regret it after a couple months when i start to lose all the flexibility i had.

i try to stretch on my own, but its just not the same as when you are in the company of a large group of sociopathic and sadistic wanna be street warriors.

Dravyk 05-26-2003 04:55 AM

Sykk, you came on a board of adult webmasters with an exercise question?!?! :P

Seriously though, one problem (besides just the regular muscle pain, which was plenty) I had every time I started out to exercise was overdoing it. (Which is why it doesn't happen to frequently.)

It's like a car, and I get enough momentum to finally go, get off my ass and workout, and when I do the car's going to fast, rather I am. I've built up so much momentem to get to FINALLY doing something, I go hit it too hard, do too much and end up hurting myself .. and I mean hurting myself GOOD. Pulling too much weight, doing too many reps, whatever, and something always gives and ends up killing me for a month or more.

I so badly want to get into excercising and such but everything time I think about I remember all the other failed (and pained) times. Always happened in the first week or two when I start. If I could just get up the momentum to do it, then be able to hit the breaks or lower my gears and take it carefully I'd be happy.

Who knows, maybe now that I'm older and wiser (and older and slower!) maybe next time I'll actually take it easy when I start. I was thinking maybe the personal trainer route would be the best way (so I don't over do it) but after reading this thread that doesn't sound like such a viable option either.

Dravyk, where have you been?! Oprano webmasters have been getting in shape this year!!

SykkBoy 05-27-2003 12:16 AM

The first yoga class kicked ass.....the instructor is total MilfHunter material and it's not taboo to fart...goddamn I love this yoga stuff! :)

I'm getting with a personal trainer even though it's a bit out of my price range just so I don't end up injuring myself (I've had a bad back and knees since I was 17 or 18) by doing something wrong.

Billy 05-27-2003 12:23 AM

Pain.. who needs it : )

I am falling apart, bad back, bad knees and now no sleep : )

How long till babies sleep at night ????

Mike AI 05-27-2003 12:31 AM

voodooman 05-27-2003 02:33 AM

Pain is your friend,

It lets you know your still alive!

It gets better. You have to break the muscles down, before you can
build them back up. This sounds pretty harsh, but you actually tear
the muscle fibers to make room for them to either grow, or develope.

Try taking Creatine before and after each workout.

Stop fucking complaining. It will hurt more in 72 hours when Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness kicks in, or DOMS.

Stay with it for a month. Let it become a lifestyle. Good Luck!

Going to the gym isn't for me. I've been playing indoor soccer. I'm a smoker, and I feel like I'm going to die after every game. Its a ton of fun, and I get injured a lot. But I keep coming back for more.

Eventually I will quit smoking, but I just got divorced. I can only quit one habit at a time.

My last kid started sleeping from 8pm-8am at about 5 months. It was joyous. I can't remember with the first one, I have blocked it out of my mind.

Good luck with the workouts, and you're right...Yoga does rule. It can be a tough workout. I haven't done it in several years, but I remember it felt good.

A final note regarding exercise...let me quote my favorite author:

"A therapist once told me that all the exercise any person needs could be had in bed." - from Friday by Robert Heinlein

Drav,

The pain subsides with subsequent workouts, in fact you will be looking forward to that dull ache after a good workout. It tells you that your body is responding to the stress placed on them. They are getting stronger, and you are getting healthier.

Ever since starting Gracie Jiu Jitsu I have become more intuned to my own body. I no longer lift weights, but get asked all the time if I do. No soda passes my lips, nor fast food. My carb intake is around 50 to 100 grams a day, with large amounts of protein.

Since you sweat profuseley grappling, I also have started taking one a day vitamins, as well as min 10 glasses of water a day. My blood pressure has dropped down considerably since I started training with Dig and now Voodooman in GJJ. Coupled with one on one training with Rener Gracie, my fitness level and skills have been improving most excellently. I hope to be competing in the next 3 to 6 months.

Over the weekend in Vegas, I went to dinner with my sister and her friends. I got asked if my sister was older by a couple of years. I don't know any better way to sell working out than that. You will feel better. Just stick with it, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

TheEnforcer 05-27-2003 04:47 PM

Sykk - if you are planning to get back into shape for another perve shoot the most important exercises may be getting a Price Albert and hanging weights from it

I'm fighting every step of the way to stay out of the mature genre (even though my age says different)

Including hair color, trimming and gasp .... maybe goatee color he he he

I'll go into mature kicking and screaming!!! :D

cj 05-28-2003 12:21 AM

sykk, purve mature, that's a great idea!!!

don't get a prince albert, it hurts & leaves a scar ...

Harry,

Anytime, hit me up. I plan to get some certification at some point in my life. Probably gonna do it in my free time, something fitness related. My diet all my life has been plain terrible. I used to suffer when I was in Canada from Gout, almost every other month. The 4 months I've been here in LA, I have not once had an occurence of it. Not a trace. I am no longer winded by a long walk, but rather by grappling and doing Jiu Jitsu for 5 minutes straight all out. I have a long ways to go, as most grapplers can go 30 minutes to an hour no problem, but it's a road I have no problem walking on and actually enjoy.

I'm glad to hear you want to get your health back up to par. We aren't getting any younger you know! Next week... <Gasp> Going to the Doc's to get patches and whatever else I need to quit smoking. I'm partial to just going cold turkey, but dont' want to put anyone in my vicinity through that experience.

SykkBoy 05-28-2003 05:00 PM

Ant, been through the diet change here myself...
I drank my last Pepsi last night and have already tossed out the chips, etc.
I'm stocked way up on herbal teas and heading to the health food store later today.

Cyberpunk is helping me a great deal too...he's lost 35 pounds in the last three months, down to about 250 now and he's looking to be down to 200 by January, where I want to be up to 185-190 by then :) I'm not looking to lose weight so much as gain weight and sculpt what I have into muscle instead of flab.

My second workout wasn't so bad and now with a personal trainer, that'll be a big help too for those times when I need the motivation to pull out that extra situp or rep without blowing out my shoulder or straining my back...

VooMan 05-28-2003 10:11 PM

I was athletic most of my life, and in high school there was nothing better than going out for a nice long run...

Anyone who knows me though, knows that I have REALLY let myself go. But I've been working out religiously for the past few months and it's like finding a lost friend. There is nothing like a good workout and feeling sore the next day. Anthony's right. I look forward to it. :) My diet has improved as well, and some weight is slowly coming off. The main thing though is that I feel MUCH better.

I remember when I first moved to Atlanta and joined a gym. The personal trainer insisted on putting me through a workout although I knew how all the machines worked. I was like: "dude, I haven't worked out in 10 years... you're pushing way too hard." Needless to say, I couldn't reach for my wallet out of my back pocket the next day. What an idiot... I took to working out on my own though, and I absolutely cannot miss a workout. It definitely becomes an important part of your life if you give it time...

No kidding. I knew he did Kempo or karate but not fought in awhile.

I harbored thoughts of fighting King of the cage, but at my age of 34, those illusions are pretty transparent. :D

I'm gonna train for GJJ amateur stuff, prob first competition will be in November I think.
