A project costing at least $10 billion designed to send a probe to bore to the centor of the earth was proposed in Nature magazine this week.

“Planetary missions have enhanced our understanding of the solar system and how planets work, but no comparable exploratory effort has been directed towards the Earth’s interior. Space probes have reached a distance of about 40 astronomical units (6,000 million km, or 3,700 million miles), but subterranean probes have descended only some 10km (6.2 miles).”

Here's the article for anyone that is interested.

Is this a good use of $10 billion in public funds? I would rather have seen the super-collider finished in Texas as far as big money science projects go. Is any science project worth $10 billion?

Torone 05-15-2003 07:35 AM

Poor. The Supercollider, Geothermal energy...There's a ton of things that I'd rather see done with that kind of money than trying to bore to the center of the planet.

Trev 05-15-2003 08:11 AM

$10 Billion would go a long way in Cancer research or AIDS...

how come it's always the whacked out scientists with the dumbest most fucked up ideas that get the funding?...

Scientist A: I'd like to do something to help rid humans of a deadly disease.
Mr Money Bags: Erm... well... no!

Scientist B: I'd like to build a probe... bore right into the center of the earth, which will result in the probe melting with no real benefit to mankind and it'll cost you about... hmmm... $10 billion... whadaya say?
Mr Money Bags: FUCK YEAH I LOVE IT!!! where's my cheque book!!

:headwall:

I agree with you guys. Maybe I'd feel differently if I were really into geology.

Rolo 05-15-2003 09:24 AM

I would rather have:

- Fusion Power Plant Energy
- Quantum Computers

But I guess they cost more than $10 Billion :(

Trev 05-15-2003 09:27 AM

I’m all for scientific research but I see no way for mankind to gain anything from this.

Nano Technology is something that really interests me, lets throw $10 billion at that and see where we get :D

Fuck the Matrix!! :nyanya:

The Borg made nano technology aware to the public consciusness LONG before that overrated flick came along!

Star Trek rocks!!

BTW- Trev...

I LOVE SG-1 but Star Trek is STILL first with nanite technology!! :rokk:

A lot of the science that is used for Space Exploration and other types of technological research that may seem useless at the time have been advanced all other areas of research including AIDS and Cancer research.

You would be surprised at how much of the technology we have today is directly related to NASA's efforts and the efforts of the Space Program.

It would not surprise me if similar advancements were made because of a "meaningless" exploration of the earth's core.

I would like some of Seven of Nine's nanoprobes, to probe me :D

Wine me dine me, seven of nine me!
