If the crowds at Walmart in hallendale bch are any indication of the strength and/or recovery of our economy Then we should be on our way UP

as well...my girls are making and billing more money now on avg than at anytime since 9/11

Hey Terrorist and Saddam

FUCK YOU

every time the price of oil goes down-
more disposable income is left in consumer's hands.

with common sense restrictions on travels abroad,
more money will be spend in USA this year than a year before...

should be good for the US Economy

Forest 03-24-2003 09:51 AM

Serge,

watching the news last night the price of gas at the pump actually went UP a penny last week.

I think we will see it drop Dramaticaly as the refineries get more and more of this really cheap oil in and out to the pumps :okthumb:

Just in time for the Summer driving, and vacation season. :bjump:

Hopefully this will help the airlines recover a bit with the drop in fuel cost.

America Stands Strong :rokk:

Went to the grocery store on Saturday - the store was vacant aside from maybe a half-dozen senior citizens haunting the aisles. Weekends are usually insane - I only ran in to grab milk and was hoping to dash out and miss the usual mile-long lines. There were NO lines and 3 open cashiers. Weird.....

Gas pumps were still vacant - although I saw prices dropped from $2.24 to $2.17, should help inspire more purchases.

Went to the movies with the kids yesterday - the theater was about 1/2 as full as usual. Not many kids without parents - and usually the place is over-run by kids like rats with ZERO supervision.

People are still glued to CNN - and I think families are staying closer together. Could be good for the economy once they all start shopping again, and maybe that extra togetherness could be good for the country as well. Our youth could benefit from some family time.

Lookin' for that silver lining. :D

Gas prices have gone DOWN about 5 cents a gallon around here since the war started.

RawAlex 03-24-2003 10:44 AM

Now, if Bush's economic team was smart, they would put in a 5 - 10 cent per gallon gas tax to take effect at the end of the conflict - when oil prices have dropped back down... keeping gas at $1.40- $1.50 won't hurt too much... and all that cash could actually be used to pay for all the tax breaks, give backs, and the massive costs of war and rebuilding Iraq.

Alex

Winetalk.com 03-24-2003 10:51 AM

Alex,
I disagree...

Bush's objective is to stimilate US economy, and every cent of tax is taking away from this objective

RawAlex 03-24-2003 11:16 AM

Actually, his objective is to get re-elected, so that he can then have that nice free 4 years without facing re-election... givebacks and tax reductions will only pile up money owing in the future... but that's okay, the future belongs to someone else! :-)

Alex

Winetalk.com 03-24-2003 11:46 AM

Alex,
are you suggesting US President to do something which makes voters to recall him from the office?

have you EVER studied logic?

sarettah 03-24-2003 01:19 PM

Hate to be the one to bring this up (but, what the hell, I seem to be the primary thread killer round here anyways)

"The Dow Jones Industrial Average, up nearly 1,000 points in the previous eight sessions on hopes that the U.S.-led war wouldn't be protracted, lost about 260 points by late morning. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 3%."

"Treasurys -- viewed as a safe haven at uncertain times -- surged. After falling sharply last week, gold and oil prices reversed and climbed as both President Bush and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein indicated that the war could drag on."

im no market expert but ill bet it is just some profit taking from the last 8 good sessions

I've about had it with this state; and I've lived here more of my life than anywhere else.

I'm Florida-bound. Don't know how long it'll take to get from here to there, what with having to work out changing jobs, houses, etc.; but I'm done with this place.

Yeah, it's warm and I have family here in California. But in Florida, it's warm, I have family AND it's a hell of a lot cheaper. I'm tired of having to have a household income over $100K just to live in a so-so neighborhood and "make it by" without being able to save at least SOME of the money I make...

Yeah, I know... Though I doubt that even if we were to find the exact same jobs we hold now (hub's a mold-maker for a toy prototyping company; I'm a web dork/coder/content manager/media encoder), we'll get paid the same salaries as in LA.

God's honest truth, though; I'd prefer it if hubby could find work that would pay enough to support us without my having to work outside the house. My kid's in 6th grade, and I'd like to be HOME and available while she's going through those painful and scary teenaged years; since I haven't had any time to experience staying at home (other than when I was gravely ill -- so even then I didn't get to be the GOOD kind of stay-at-home mom).

I just don't want to look back 20 years from now and realize that I spent all my time working so hard that I never got a chance to enjoy my family and life; and the way it's going right now, that's where I'm headed.

kath 03-24-2003 02:31 PM

Wooohoooo!

When Forest talks....the stock market listens! :)

Rox...I'm with ya sweetie - just need to find a state I like. Hub works for the state so we do have that issue to sort out - and we just bought a house. But I'm with you - the gas prices, the taxes, the property taxes, the total cost of living.

It cost $85 per kid to play softball/baseball out here this year - give me a break! It's the little things like this that add up. :headwall:

Rox 03-24-2003 02:49 PM

I guess I'm just really feeling down and disgusted with everything right now.

This house we bought, just about 2 1/2 years ago, has turned into a freakin' money pit. Once AGAIN, we found termite bodies and wings in the master bedroom & bath this past weekend (rain+warm=swarm -- apparently the last treatment didn't do enough). I've put a lot of money into this place and there's still a LOT left to do just to make it what I would consider "decent enough to relax and enjoy it."

Now, with the war on, and the federal and state budgets in crisis, and the oncoming "POP" of the real estate bubble I see coming probably within the next year, I'm feeling like if I don't get the fuck out REAL soon, I'm going to be stuck with this albatross, and all the fee, tax & whatever-the-fuck-else hikes; and NEVER be able to escape.

At this point I'm seeing things from the perspective of how I can get out without taking any MORE of a total financial ass-reaming than I've already taken. Not to mention having one LESS ball & chain tying me to this state. If I'm only renting, I'm much freer to leave whenever the time's right.

Oh yeah... and $2.11/gal. on the corner down the street -- still SUCKS.

kath 03-24-2003 03:42 PM

Rox -

Sounds like we're in the same boat - we bought our house 2 years ago this month. I would say we need about $20k in work to get our house to where I want it - funny, the guy who owned it before us was a contractor. Would you think he'd fix any of the little things that should have been taken care of? Nope - are you kidding? lol

Money pit - have heard hub say that before. I love the house but there are a lot of things we need to do with it before I'm 100% happy.

So....where are we moving? What states are better? Who has the lowest taxes? Property taxes? Gas prices? Anyone???
:zoinks:

Noticed the same thing here, too, Kath.

Costco is usually a place to avoid on Sundays. It was positively civilised yesterday and eerily uncrowded.
