My wife has been out of town for a few days an I have actually found myself spending 18 hours a day in front of my computer, sleeping on the couch, surfing boards, stats, working on our products... granted i have achieved a LOT over the past few days... but while some might call it being hyper productive, others would call it addcitive behavior.
According to this site: http://www.seanet.com/~gtate/addict.htm#symptoms i apparently suffer from internet addiction. So here it is at 4:45 AM and i'm still going. Now mind you I have taken the occasional break for meeting friends for chicken wings and beer and going to blockbuster.. but those are brief. So the question really is.. ARE YOU AN INTERNET ADDICT TOO? |
Yes.
|
|
yup, its a  but i :inlove: it

===============
Normal Day =============== 8 - 9 am: Wake up 9am - 6pm: Office 6 - 7pm: Come home and eat 7pm until 3 - 6 am: Code, Read/Learn, Play with my Servers, Surf etc. Friday or Saturday I usually end up sleeping like 12 hours....but I get a hell of a lot done during the week. 18 + hours in front of a PC is normal for me....but I have to get away every few weeks. I usually hit Bourbon Street, catch dinner/movie or something. For me the long hours are an investment. When I'm 30 I will slow down. :D |
WOW!
Less that 20 minutes and 3 other junkies are already sharing! *tapping veins* haha. cool article Colin ;-)) So when is it too much? When do you have to just STOP surfing? |
make it 4
;-) |

:D Usually happens every couple months or so -- and for a few days after I will still spend time on the PC, but I'm not as productive. It usually takes a few days to get back in the routine after a burnout. |
ARE YOU AN INTERNET ADDICT TOO?
------- I'm guilty :scans: |
Average day at camp wyldesites:
- Wake up between 6-7am .. to Howard Stern - Fix MASS coffee and/or espresso. - Start working by 8am .. turn on ICQ around 10am - Take 30mins for lunch (at the computer still, so I can surf/shop during lunch) - Work until around 5 or 6pm. Break for an hour for dinner. - Back on the machine by 7 or 8pm. Work until 10pm or later ... go to bed, wake up, repeat .... oh, almost forgot, sometimes make room for a :wankit: :rokk: :rokk: :rokk: Last edited by MikeW at Jan 19 2003, 11:38 AM |

Have cable modem and if need be have a AOL dial up as a backup (and for traveling) |
Addicted and proud of it.
Before I moved the last time, I use to have DSL, a cable modem, and a backup ISDN line... I thought I was safe until construction crews dug up all the wires at the same time! Then I went 6 hours without.... I almost died! When I am home, I work. I watch TV and work (the big screen is the other end of the room, 30 feet or so away, I can see it fine), I bring food to the computer and work while I eat... Yup, addicted. :-) |
The most difficult part of being a junkie is when you go away
for a few days, or on vacation. However, sometimes it feels good to get away from it for a few days, but mostly just drives ya crazy. |
I'm a pepper too.
I keep my laptop plugged in and networked to my main PC via DSL. I surf, look shit up, shop, banking, etc, all while watching my favorite TV shows. Next question- Do you enjoy internet more then sex? |
No FUCKING Way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

You realize you're addicted when you're at a restaurant and you begin impatiently tapping your finger waiting for the check because you NEED to get back and check stats, servers, etc... |
HAHA Glad I am not the only one.... I am definately addicted... though I just tell people I have a company I have to oversee... I am an internet junkie!
I would say I need a 12 step program, but I am happy with way things are. I travel a lot and go no where without my laptop.... |

Really?? I already have you showing on my ICQ and I haven't gotten anything??
ICQing you now.... |
There's something out there besides the net? :D
I work on it. I help kids with homework on it. I settle bets on it about all sorts of things. I check border traffic on it. I fight on it, I laugh on it. I talk to friends on it (beats the 40 cents a minute to call the States) I flirt on it (ok, I flirt everywhere anyway) I pay my bills on it. (you can't pay a bill by mail in Mexico, but you can pay them online, how modern!) I do my banking on it (Mexican banks have better service online than the US ones). I shop on it (best deals, no border crossing lines) If it weren't for the internet, I'd never have met any of you..ergo, my life is richer for it. Hi, my name is Heather (only on the net, lol) and I'm happy to be an Internet Addict. |
Heather, ypu missed one...
you mud wrestle on it ;-))) |
I've been hooked since the first day I "set foot" on the 'net - even when I was on via AOL. lol Fortunately I grew up....
My first email address (and I still have it) was internetaddict at mindspring dot-com The tech support guys @ Earthlink love that one whenever I have to call in for something and give my root account addy. lol I used to have a horribly addicted schedule like the one posted, but in recent months (OK, just a month and a half) I've cut my 'net time WAY down because I realized I was missing watching my kids grow up. I started limiting myself to 1 hour of board posting/reading per day - until I found Oprano - now I've upped myself to 1 in the am and 1 late at night after the kids are in bed. lol And I limit my work hours too - some things are just more important right now. That's not to say I don't still have my 'net addiction or my drive to succeed - it just means that I finally have my priorities in order and will actually be spending some time floating around in the pool this summer with the kids and my wonderful hubby! :inlove: :inlove: |
Kath,
you'd make a perfect councelor for Internet Addicts Anonymous ;-0 |
I have had this bookmarked for a very long time.
http://www.stileproject.com/feb9-2001.html#ij ===================== I am an Information Junkie of the worst possible kind. But I am not alone. We are a new breed of addicts that did not exist fifteen years ago. Once the web was out of it's early infancy, and photographs and multimedia became more prevalent on the web, we started to get addicted. Once computers were cheap enough for every family to afford one, the addiction started to take hold of me, and our society overall. Forget what you've heard about being addicted to heroin and nicotine, this is far worse, for there is no cure for the Information Junkie. To cure him you would have to replace his brain. I define an Information Junkie as someone who NEEDS to be near a computer at all times. No other form of mass communication will do. Television? Don't make me fucking laugh. An Information Junkie is someone who breaks out in a cold sweat when they can't connect to the Internet. Someone who cares more about the people in chat rooms than their real friends, if they have any at all. Someone who knows where to get all the porn they could possible want for free, but doesn't, because they've seen it all before. Someone who has seen every single "funny picture" that your friends forward you in e-mail a million times over, and who's personal hygiene suffers due to laziness. It was a slow process at first. Maybe your dad brought home a computer from work, or got the family a PC for Christmas. Wow, something to type your essays for school on. Big fucking deal. Then one of your friends might have showed you that you could use your computer for different sorts of things. EVIL things. I swear to fucking god I never knew that women blew horses when I was 13. Who the hell would have thought that was possible? It wasn't until I was 18 that I realized that men blew horses too! Holy shit! This is fucked up. Stop the press! People have sex with animals? That's not all they do. The Internet has shown me the darkest side of humanity. More strange and twisted than I ever thought possible. This reminds me of a quote I once heard: When you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back into you. You can't walk away from this without being changed for better or for worse. Every single experience that you have in your life molds your overall psyche, and forms the way you will react to future life experiences. With that said, how do you think being exposed to the darker side of life will change you? Believe me, you won't become no Marry fucking Poppins. I'm not saying that it's all bad though. I would rather know what happens in this world than live my life in a state of ignorance thinking that everyone is content, bellies are full and one day we'll all join hands and sing in perfect harmony. I don't know why, but I want to know the truth. I can't live a life filled with ignorance and lies. I think I'm getting ahead of myself here. Let's go back a few years, right before I got into High School when people still didn't know what a dot-com was. I was always interested in computers, ever since we had an Atari and Colecovision in the house. I remember getting an Apple IIc for my birthday one year. That was pretty cool. I was 7 years old and still had that sparkle in my eye. But nothing, absolutely nothing prepared me for the Internet. I was born to do this site. I don't consider myself a writer, webmaster or any of that nonsense. I consider myself to be the master of ceremonies in the three ring circus of freakshow-like media. I am the grumpy old man in the corner of the pub, commenting in a harsh yet brutally truthful way on everything he sees. No one else was doing it exactly the way I wanted it done, so I just did it myself. Let's talk about the constant exchange of thought and emotion with pseudo-friends. Whether you use ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, chat rooms or e-mail it doesn't matter. The waves of pornography, satire and tech media that washes across your face each day will change you. The socializing and cyber-wars that you take part in online will change you. The comfortably numb feeling you get from having the light from the monitor dance across your face at night will change you. For good or bad, it is really up to you. You know how they say that the first time you do heroin is the best because you get higher than you will ever get again? The virgin high. That's what it was like for me, young Information Junkie, when I first logged on to the Internet oh-so-many years ago. I've never done heroin, mind you, but I can guarantee you that I wouldn't get addicted. I'd shoot it into my arm and laugh. This is nothing, this is a joke. Why? Because I have an addiction that far outshadows any other addiction that humanity has ever created. Crack and heroin do not hold a candle to seeing every single WHAZZUP! parody under the sun. This is the kind of addiction that makes you feel empty inside unless you are constantly feeding it. This addiction is of the need to constantly see new media 24/7, every single day for the rest of my life until I die. I consume words, images, videos, audio files... I become one with the media until I can't bare to look at the screen anymore. How did I first know that I had a problem? When I'd start to skip school to come home and use my computer. ===================== |
I don't drink often, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs..this is my addiction.
From my vice I have met and married a wonderful man, started a business, found work with a great company, met a lot of good people and broadened my horizons and knowledge base. |

You could wake up at 3AM unable to sleep and always find a friendly person to listen to you bitch or cry. For some, your online family knew more about you then your real family. Many romances were discovered online & many hearts broken resulting in great online fueds. Being online allows you to project an aspect of your personality or to reinvent yourself. The downside is that it's also difficult to learn who is real & who is sincere. There's a level of emotional safety online. I often wonder if internet addicts or us hardcore geeks share a common thread of insecurity or some other character flaw. I've met a lot of wonderful people online, however my relationships have been nurtured face to face. |
You mean there is life off line too??
Its life Jim, but not as we know it (apologies to Dr McCoy) :nyanya: :hic: :cdance: Hey Oprano, Hey Serge!! Hows things? |
yup, I go back to the BBS days too and you are right, it was very much like that.
I know that the reason I fell in love with the BBS world was that it let me mask things about me that as a teenager I was highly insercure about. That is why the BBW community has developed at such a rate since the internet became such a force. It started with BBSs actually. It allows people to talk to each other without initally being judged. I love that. |

Is it the type of users or a true niche? Do you remember when you'd have a hot and heavy chat relationship with someone online the go to a GT and get completely blown away? For the most part the fact that you got beyond the facade you were able to relate on another level, however there were always extremes. It would be nice to think that the world didn't care about physicality but they do. What’s enlightening is that there is an appreciation for all types which is why we have niche. I think that when we chatted online we sometimes set ourselves up for disappointment by creating expectations that really weren’t about the other person. I know I did. Reality slaps you in the face when you realize they’re real and not just a nightmare. I hope you know I’m kidding… sorta. |
I would have to say: "definitely".

I've had a long and sordid past with "Internet Addiction". I started in 6th grade with my 300 baud modem, my Commodore 64, and BBS's. I spent a good 2-3 years from 8pm at night until 3-4 in the morning fucking around on the BBS's.
I laid of for a while and didn't pick it back up until the days of the 9600 baud modem (pre-14.4) days. That got me through college. Then once again I took a break. Then the days of my cable modem and T-1's came around. I had a little website that I spent way too much time working on. I was on the computer roughly 20 hours a day (i didn't sleep much due to un-natural circumstances that i won't mention in a public forum). Now, I believe I have a very healthy balance. I try not to spend more than 8-10 hours a day on the Internet (mostly working). I try to limit my entertainment to other activities. Meaning...I don't mix business with pleasure (as much as humanly possible.) There you have it... |
wireless access is one of my happier moments of discovery. now you can take a laptop to bed with you ;)
|
The first step to conquering your addiction is to admit you have a problem..
I AM NOT ADDICTED TO THE INTERNET!! I didn't admit it so I don't have to worry about dealing with it :nyanya: |
