Well, there are no traffic numbers in there, so I can think of several reasons. If you convert 1:500 average, and send 10 hits each to 50 sites, it is likely one of them gives you a signup. With a 1:10 ratio for that site.
Whatever the reason, these stats are useless.

In fact, who is to keep a sponsor from rigging the statistician numbers in the first place? If they know the stats will be published, most of them will make sure they look good..

Greetings,

Art

Mike AI 11-27-2002 11:33 AM

Yeah those numbers seem a little off - maybe it was for a 4free type program or something.

To get 1 in 15 on a normal site with normal traffic would be pretty amazing.

Mutt 11-27-2002 12:54 PM

don't forget that GreenGuy also won a Hummer. This is one amazingly lucky man!

Mike AI 11-27-2002 01:01 PM

I thought it was a Viper?!?!

I know that is one guy who praises Almighty R-n!

:wnw:

ulfie 11-27-2002 01:06 PM

It was a Viper. I was standing there when they made the drawing and thought it to be an amazing coincidence that he won.

Mutt 11-27-2002 01:08 PM

I just got ANOTHER innovation in a newsletter from R-n! He has invented something new, a bookmark thingamajig, the surfer gets a new bookmark file with links to all the sites in CECash, but guess what? YOUR AFFILIATE CODE IS IN THE BOOKMARK LINKS!!!!

SOMEBODY CALL LUKE AND LET HIM KNOW THAT THE FANTASYMAN HAS GONE AND DONE IT AGAIN!!!!

The legend grows............................

RawAlex 11-27-2002 01:14 PM

Someone hit the nail on the head earlier on in the posts - one of the things not showing in the stats is a "long term" results... perhpas he has sent thousands of hits without a sale, and this just happens to be the "lucky week".

Remember, while it is a simplistic way to explain a complicated statistical situation, "1 in 500" can be any one of the 500, including the first 1. If you don't sample right, your stats would be 1 in 1.

Alex

Peaches 11-27-2002 01:25 PM

I've also wondered what he's counting at "hits". Are they raw? Unique? Hits to the join page? Hits where people have actually attemped to sign up similar to ARS's PIS stats?

The funny thing is that R_n's program's at the bottom B)

Almighty Colin 11-27-2002 01:37 PM

They looked fishy to me. Interestingly though, these numbers pass Benford's Law test and look "not faked". (Serge loves that test).

A distribution of something like $/signup will have roughly 30% of the digits starting with a 1 (not 1/9 believe it or not!). 9 out of 30 start with a 1 (ignore 0's at beginning) . 30%. Most people faking data would have used about 11%.

homegrownmof 11-27-2002 01:56 PM

Slavik,

I think the important fact is that Homegrown is the overall top money producing program :)

Um, is this like an autobookmark thing?

hmmm, I remember some people getting lynchings for this and now it's an "OK" thing because a "Player" does it? I guess it's like the celeb sites? Dirty rotten cheaters until a "player" does it? I can't wait to go launch my new beasty sites......because sooner or later, with money in this business getting tighter....the "players" will start tossing in some beasty sites...but I guess then it will be ok and applauded as groundbreaking...excuse me while I break out my player hating clothes......or time to become a player ;)

Anyone else wonder if all these FM haters realize how desperate and
pathetic their neverending posts and comments bashing him for what
he's done, and/or being given credit for, are becoming?

They come off like a bunch of bitter ex-girlfriends.

It's truly sad.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Mike AI 11-27-2002 06:20 PM

DX you are on the wrong thread....

The good people of Oprano only Praise Almighty R-n!!

Seriously though, there is NO doubt R-n has played an important part in the industry. I do not know one person who does NOT respect him as a business person. However, he has done many things to hurt the industry to line his OWN pockets - that is one of the issues I have with him. One I have been battling him on for years.

But the same could be said with many people...

One thing that we ALL derive entertainment from is the ever expansive EGO R-n has. That is pretty much what he is lampooned the most for.

Love or hate R-n, you have to respect him. ( and you know, I have a feeling he is more then happy with that )

Praise R-n! :wnw:

Actually most of GG's stats are very qualified. He's got good traffic and when you put it in a category of paysites, where the surfer KNOWS he is going to pay from the get go, it's not hard to get good conversions.

No, he doesnt send the kind of traffic Hun does, but then again if you have the surfer sitting there waiting to pay, you don't need to.

Mike AI 11-28-2002 12:12 AM

KK no doubt Green Guy has good traffic.... though anyone doing 1 in 15 is amazing!!

ya took the words out of my mouth kk

GG has had links to my sites for quite a while, he only sends a few hundred hits a month, and the niches convert at 1/15 - 1/50 very often ...

unique click count

there's a few webmasters out there who have figured out how to do it ... its just different kind of work to make smaller numbers perform better.

greenguy 11-28-2002 09:02 AM

Holy Flurking Schnit! My ears are ringing :)

For some God-forsaken reason, I feel the need to post here....

slavdog - http://www.thestatistician.com/greenguy/sept02/03.html - most, if not all of the anime hits came from my anime page - http://www.link-o-rama.com/greenguy/anime.htm (I do have a small anime TGP, but it is very small) I did look back at my totals for Sept for them (there's no way in hell I'm going to put the actual number of signups on that page - LOL) For those top 2 MegaPornBucks anime sites - 112 hits, 6 signups

art - yes, I'm positive that I do get lucky each month with some of these sites, maybe only sending 20-30 hits & getting a sale while not getting anything the other 11 months of the year - but 1:240-360 still ain't bad ;-)

Mike AI - while I do use alot of 4free type programs, those totals are not counted in the normal stats, but everything is counted in the Over All Money Producers part - signups, recurring, 4free, dialer, avs, etc. Sorting out the normal sites is hard enough :)

ulfile, Mutt, Mike AI - yes, it was a Viper - yes, I did have a 1:17 chance of winning it, yes, my message board is over on Netsurprise - yes, CE does own Netsurprise - no, I do not get paid by Netsurprise, yes, I do sent a bucketload of signups to CE - yes, I did just order 2 TV/DVD combos for the kids for Xmas from the CE Vault :) I'm also on the verge of getting enough points form ARS to get a very cool Galaga/Ms PacMan video game - but I'm sure that'll be considered a scam too ;-)

Peaches - the totals on there are compiled by RevStats using the data that the sponsor provides in their stats section. I basically download an xl sheet & edit it - what you see are the same totals that I see :)

homegrownmo, slavdog - I'll admit that I do throw alot of shit at HomeGrown due to the Free Trial & I'm sure that throws off the numbers a bit, but I don't really care - HomeGrown is always in the top 5 Overall Money Producing Sites :)

Nick :)

Greenguy,

Thanks for commenting here. Always good to hear from the horse's mouth ;-)

1:240-360 indeed is still quite good. But as they are listed now, the numbers are not really useful I think.

Now that you mention 112 hits - 6 signups, that adds useful traffic info and "qualifies" the signup ratio a bit. The chances of that happening if your average ratio would be 1:500 are rather small. (Colin will now exactly how small! :-) So that makes the ratio rather impressive. :wnw:

Greetings,

Art

greenguy 11-28-2002 09:36 AM

art - yes, I agree 100% that if I posted the actual numbers on there, things would seem a little more "legit" but then you get into the whole thing of people sitting there, adding up all my signups, multiplying it by $30 & pretty much knowing what I make a month - I don't need that :)

There's 2 reason I put the stats up there:
1 - to help those making free sites know what's currently converting well with my traffic
2 - an excuse to put up webmaster referral links :rokk:

GreenGuy good to see you stopping by. You have always had good traffic, and more importantly you are a master of filtering, and sending highly qualified traffic to sites.

Many people do not realize that if you just slam traffic to a site, you will not always convert as well. IT is better to filter surfers based on their wants so they are targeted with sites they will probably join!

Cleo, everyone has been wondering where you have been - was one of the leading questions over at Oprano!!!

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody.

I haven't noticed any echos, but I have noticed that all of a sudden my traffic has gone up and now I'm seeing my recips listed with all the big boys. :gbounce:

I don't give a shit about politics and have a nice life outside of the boards. The only thing that I look for from a board is growing my business, not entertainment or endless dribble about political views. It's nice to hang out with webmasters who seem to understand traffic and seem to have lots of it.

Like many in this business I'm nothing but a godless whore who enjoys the finer things in life and like a feline will go whereever I'm most comfortable.

I would not even have known about this thread if it was not for one of my regular submitters putting a note in their submission to my link list.

One of the best things that I have every done in this business is to start a link list. It's truly amazing what happens when you filter traffic to the right sponsor, $$$.

It's the GreenGuy who I have to thank for starting up a link list in what seems like such a long time ago.

Serge has done some nice things for me as well, but Mike AI just seems clueless so it was time for me to move on.

Instead of sending raw traffic why don't we see the most joins.

Get different webmasters from differing boards to send traffic to one (independent) affilliate for one day.

Then see who sends the most joins :)

The money due for that traffic could then be sent to a charity.

You are right Opti.... It is going to take a lot more to get me motivated to redirect my traffic. It would not be worth my time to make a point. I guess I am getting older.... :P

Plus I really do not have a clue, and in many ways that is very true. in 1996 I did everything. I would recruit girls, take photos, go get them developed, I build HTML, did my own graphics, answered e-mails as girls, if there were issues with the server - I would get on it ( I had read UNIX for Dummies back then) through telnet and try to figure things out. I would trade traffic, submit to SEs, try to harass PK for links, etc... etc...

Now my days as a Webmaster are over, I have not built an HTML page for commercial purposes in years. I do not have passwords to any of my servers, nor to any of my sites. The day to day operation of HiRise is no longer in my hands.

My life has become one of management.... even that I generally just point in a general direction, and then Stan the Man handles the rest. In a way I miss the old days, working 15 hour days, always battling, the excitement, the competition, the comradery, the new and interesting ideas and programs that would come out. The new business angles, the new models, new sites.... but that is ancient history. At least for me. So I guess in many respects I do not have a clue.

So it is only fitting that on Thanksgiving, that I give thanks to my wonderful staff.... at HiRise - Stan the Man running the whole show, Tim as King of the Mailers, Luke the Production Manager, All Day Edd - the man who can fix, build, run, operate ANYTHING at ANYTIME, Billy the problem solver and king of PR, EricP the new kid on the block, a real up and comer.... not to mention Sandy ( mom) who juggles the books of all 12 companies like a champ, and then all the other webmaster/scanner guys at the office. There would be NO HiRise without these fine outstanding, dedicated people. THEY ARE INDEED THE REASON WHY I DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A CLUE!! B)

Of course there is another tiny company I have no clue about as well, DirectNIC... I am indeed thankful for Sig for making sure all 60 or so employees are churning along....

If it were not for these fine people, I would actually have to work.... and then of course to get a clue.... I :inlove: them all!!

PS - this is my sentimental post for thanksgiving, don't get used to it. Oh and I am sober.... :hic: Seriously!
