Clinton takes a swing at Bush....

Clinton launches withering attack on Bush on Iraq, Katrina, budget Sun Sep 18, 4:03 PM ET WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former US president Bill Clinton sharply criticised George W. Bush for the Iraq War and the handling of Hurricane Katrina, and voiced alarm at the swelling US budget deficit. Breaking with tradition under which US presidents mute criticisms of their successors, Clinton said the Bush administration had decided to invade Iraq "virtually alone and before UN inspections were completed, with no real urgency, no evidence that there were weapons of mass destruction." The Iraq war diverted US attention from the war on terrorism "and undermined the support that we might have had," Bush said in an interview with an ABC's "This Week" programme. Clinton said there had been a "heroic but so far unsuccessful" effort to put together an constitution that would be universally supported in Iraq. The US strategy of trying to develop the Iraqi military and police so that they can cope without US support "I think is the best strategy. The problem is we may not have, in the short run, enough troops to do that," said Clinton. On Hurricane Katrina, Clinton faulted the authorities' failure to evacuate New Orleans ahead of the storm's strike on August 29. People with cars were able to heed the evacuation order, but many of those who were poor, disabled or elderly were left behind. "If we really wanted to do it right, we would have had lots of buses lined up to take them out," Clinton. ................................................. |
Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
It is becoming more and more clear that Bush will be remembered as inept and incompetent.
|
Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
I know that people will take a swipe at Clinton for saying something because he's breaking with tradition by speaking out. I say it's a stupid tradition no matter who is president.

Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
This is going to be an unpopular statement, but why should the government be responsible for getting people out? Where are their friends? Family? Charities? The Red Cross? Churches? Why didn't Greyhound offer up their buses for evacuation? Or any other private transportation company for that matter?
I don't depend on the government to take care of my every need so I guess it's fustrating to me to deal with those who do. Flame away ;) |

We are now seeing second and third generation welfare families in our poor urban areas. These people have been fed, clothed and housed by the government for their entire lives. And we wonder why they can't take care of themselves ? . |
Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
Good for Clinton .. Just say N.O. to Bush ...
|
Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
Peaches, I expect that as many people as possible used friends, families, and whatever social services they could avail themselves of to get out or get help.
Wondering why there weren't better evacuation plans in place or a better response to this natural disaster is a far cry from expecting the government to take care of your every need. However, I can see the appeal of your ideas to a true fiscal conservative. Why, we can just disband the police, the fire department, the road department, the Army, the Navy ... fuck it. You want a road - you and your friends build it. Need defense from enemies both foreign and domestic - depend on your family or wait for mercenaries to donate their services. Perhaps a charity will donate some water if your house catches on fire. |
Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
PD, you can't honestly tell me you think the majority who stayed in NOLA tried but weren't able to evacuate (besides those who were required to stay there).

Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
As far as Clinton criticizing Bush ... I think the first time I remember reading an article that started out, "In breaking with the tradition that former Presidents don't criticize ..." was an Eisenhower comment on Johnson. They all do it, to some degree or another.

I know that a lot of people rode out the hurricane by their own choice, which what made them vulnerable to the flooding. I have no way of knowing how many. This is one of those things that we'll either have to wait for an investigation to determine, or have XxXotic enlighten us on since he doesn't believe one is necessary. |

If it makes you feel any better I also think it's absurd for the state of GA to consider forgiving 2 years of taxes to Delta ;)

Fucking some slut in the Oval Office is probably NOT any kind of a break with Presidential traditions. ...

First, some of them have no family. Some of them have no family or freinds in other states. And, some of the ones that do have family and freinds in other states may have found themselves in situations where their family and freinds were poor also, and too poor to provide a way to get their family and freinds to safety. From someone who has seen and at one point and time in her younger years lived not too far away from the project housing(which there is a lot of there), let me tell you... A lot of these people really had no way to get out on their own. They would have had to walk out of town(which some of them did after the storm) but I seriously doubt they would have had enough of a warning to get themselves out of harm's way before the storm hit. What Clinton proposed about the buses would have been a good idea. They're using them now to evacuate people out of the city, so what would really be the difference of using them before the hurricane hit as opposed to after except some of the lives it might have saved... |

Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
I saw an interview with Nagin when they asked about all the school buses and he pointed out that having the buses wasn't a problem - finding 250 people to DRIVE them was another issue......but that was what he said - my Dad said he could learn to drive one in 5 minutes ;)
I still stick with my feelings that most of the people who stayed in NOLA did so because they didn't WANT to leave, not because they couldn't. Which is fine, I have no problem with that. But don't come bitchin' later! |

Re: Clinton takes a swing at Bush....
Are those buses the property of the School District of New Orleans, or do they belong to a private vendor?
If they are the property of the School District, does the mayor have authority over the school district (in most cities they do not)? I gotta wonder how many people around here who are taking swipes at Nagin for what he didn't do would be screaming "Private property rights" if he had done something radical. There is more than enough incompetence to go around at the city/parish, state, and local level. How Nagin or Blanco fucked up or didn't fuck up is only one part of the clusterfuck that has been the response to Katrina. What is of far greater concern to me is the response by FEMA after four years and billions of dollars supposedly invested in our ability to respond to such incidents. |

Honestly, I think there's blame to go around from the citizens to local government to FEMA. I don't think one group/person did something wrong, it was a culmination of everything. |

I can hear Sandra Bullock in "Speed": "Oh, sure...it's just like driving a really big Pinto."
And I, by the way, learned to drive on a stick...and stayed driving one. An accomplishment of which I am rather proud as it is indeed so rare. |

Lookie, Nick used a graphic smilie. :)
Mr. "I'm Old School and Fuck Y'all" has a tendency to still use the multiple chin punctuation smiles that were popular "back in the day." The number of parentheses (chins) on the smilie indicated the intesisty of the humor. The above was offered as explanation for novice webmasters that I *know* are reading this board and muttering "what the hell is *that*?" a lot. :) |
