IS he THAT STUPID? Does he beleive that? Or is he so anti-American he would say anything to hurt the US?
|
He's a moron. Plain and simple.
|
I was pretty shocked.

I don't see anything he said which would put him before the firing squad.... correct me if I am wrong |
Serge,
I just read the transcript of the entire interview and it doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as it did when I just saw the sound bites on TV. In fact, I think it's fine on re-examination. Just saw an interview with Arnett on NBC. He was very apologetic. He regrets having done the interview. He lost both his NBC and his National Geographic jobs. I guess now he can come home and write a best-seller. Last edited by Colin at Mar 31 2003, 07:52 AM |

Short of having a gun to his head during the interview, what he did/said was inexcusable..... maybe Sadam will give him a job.... |

I have to agree with Serge...
I believe that Arnett is much less informed than one would expect; but his remarks (in the article) are not nearly as bad as what you might hear from Sam Donaldson or Petter Jennings. |
Torone, as far as I am concerned,
Arnett is FAR from "Hanoi Jane" and for me there was some valuable information (but I've been reading between the lines since 5 ;-) |
it wasnt what he said, it was pretty much the truth. BUT he shouldnt have done a interview on iraqi controled TV while we're at war. It was bad justment on his part. My GF couldnt understand why I was mad and upset either. I felt it was just plain wrong.
That's my .02 |
Dan,
regardless where interview took place, I haven't seen anything he said what would qualify for selling out of his country. I think the media over reacted |

When I read about it this morning.. MSNBC was standing behind him????? |
should be a good boost to the Iraqi troop's spirits though.... maybe they can fight that much harder/longer.

Speaking of huge explosions in Baghdad, who would have thought that a military concept would become a proper noun? |

i believe it played to the "enemies" propaganda :( |

I read the transcript and the report.
I personally don't think it was right to do an interview kissing Iraqi ass that way. It may not be illegal, but that isn't the only yardstick we should use with which to measure a person's actions. I guess reporters have a right to state their personal opinions, but not under the guise of objective reporting. In this case, I guess he wasn't pretending to be an "objective" reporter (if such an animal actually exists), but was being interviewed about his personal opinion, which is what, imho, keeps him from being a complete traitor. But..like they say about opinions, sure makes him an asshole. |
I feel sorry for us all when people get fired for interviews...
remind me the old mother Russia |
Serge, Arnett let himself be used as propaganda for IRaq. Giving the peole who are fighting us HOPE.... saying how we are bogged down, our first plan did not work, yadda yadda yadda.... He is giving AID and COMFORT to the enemy. He has done it before. He might help keep a few Iraqis motivated to fight which may lead to more American dead!
He is a scumbag - NBC, and National Geographic did the right thing. Fuck him.... |
Mike,
He has had his own style of reporting since before the Vietnam days. I love what he did with the 10,000 day war, he also won a pulitizer. I don't really mind what he said so much as doing the interview right now on Iraq tv, it might have been outta line / taste. Gerraldo who I do like, was sent packing from the 101st for some reason and now is with another company / division, not sure on the reason though. |
Todd, why am I not shocked you would be a fan of peter arnett? Why am I not shocked you are not taking a stand against him and can only come up with a weak
Quote:
Todd you are too predictible.... fortunately NBC and National Geographic understood that he was WAY out of line, and infact was doing nothing but foster a regime of tyrants, spewing propaganda that might lead to more US soldiers dying! So he "Might have been outta line/taste" HAHAHA |
Mike,
I guess you missed the late night tv last night. At first msnbc said they had no problems with his report at all, this was around 1-3am last night my time. Now of course due to politcal or whatever reason they can his ass. that's fine, there choice. It wasn't a weak response at all, the report I don't mind, When I saw it from Iraq tv, that is where I got worried. |
|
Todd if the most you can say about Peter Arnett is above, then your response is weak. I wonder if you would have a different response if you were near the front lines...
IT was not only what peter arnett said, but where he said it - on Iraqi TV - they are only going to put people on who support their propaganda.... Think they would have let him on if he said that the US was kicking ass, was 50 miles outside baghdad without any major problems, etc.. etc... Hell NO! Come on Todd, time to put your left leaning, hippie-dippiness aside... this is WAR, your NATION is at WAR, our brothers are on the front lines fighting an enemy who will use any action to try and win... including killing their own civilians, pretending to surrender to get our troops into ambushes, etc... They have absued our POWs, and probably even executed some of them.... |

Here's some more history about him from Boortz:
"Arnett has somewhat of a history for this type of thing. He was the one who announced that the allies had bombed a "baby milk factory" in Gulf War I. He was also the on-air reporter in a 1998 CNN report that accused American forces of using sarin gas in Laos during the Vietnam war in an attempt to kill American defectors. That report was later retracted by CNN. Following that incident Arnett found employment elsewhere." |
Mike,
don't get your panties in a bunch. Look at your thread subject, come on........ Your getting more and more to the right every day :( |
Todd, this is not a left or right thing - this is an American thing.
Anyone, especially someone with Amerian Nationality, who goes on the enemies propaganda statation and undermines this Nations efforts deserves the maximum condimation from all Americans. Arnett has a track record of being anti-US, especially in references to the military and the Pentagon. I hope that all Americans see it this way, and understand the man is a scumbag..... He should be treated the same way other Anti-Americans who brought aid and comfort to the enemy are treated! ( I think it is already happening!!!) |
I have about as much respect for Peter Arnett as I do for people who suggest killing him.
|

Real smart, eh? Oh I love having the media right in the frontlines... recipe for disaster. Look at all the fuck-ups they're already making because they report assumptions and speculations on the fly. |
Mike,
np you can justify things as you see them. I will come to my own conclusions as I see fit. I love my country and served my country for 3 years when I was young. yeh our country is cool, but it's also very fucked up in alot of ways. but I always support troops that are in harms way.. anyways, Off to get my Oldest Daughter for her birthday, 16 Today!!!!!! peace |
Todd - you have a 16 year old daughter??? You poor thing! Good luck with that - we've got about 4 years until we have to worry about that age. lol
Also - I remember you and my husband talking @ the Portland AWE about your similar military experiences. Weren't you also at Ft. Sill? Funny comments we see here sometimes - a difference of opinion does not an anti-American or anti-Patriot make. It's simply a difference of opinion. <_< |

I agree with Mike....fuck him.... |
Apparently the island will have to wait... Arnett gets a new job for a British Newspaper - to stay in Iraq and report!
http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/03/31/...nett/index.html As for Geraldo and the rest of the inbedded reporters, I was watching an interview on a Canadian station where one media type suggested that having the media in with the troops was the best possible thing - less media roaming around randomly pissing off soldiers, less chance that they say anything bad, and zero chance that they will report anything that hasn't been sanitized by the military. The "reporters" basically are nothing more than "dear diary" types right now... as soon as the shooting starts, they head for cover or are wisked away from the front lines. The guy being interviewed suggested that it was like "cheerleading"... getting the Whitehouse a ton of very controlled media time to tell their side of the story of the war... and to get you those lovely heart string pulling calls home from the front, where they get a soldier on the video phone, and put a wife / husband / GF/ BF / other fmaily member on the other side so they can gush on each other for a few minutes... is it news or just sad theatre? For some reason I remember the 1991 coverage being way more "gonzo"... more intimate... felt more like someone was going to drop a bomb right next to me. This all seems a little to sterile to be a war. Alex |

I agree with Mike....fuck him....[/b][/quote] Oh, I agree with the "fuck him" sentiment entirely. I can't understand why anyone would have hired him after the whole "chemical weapons in Laos" deal - but then, I'm still disgusted when a professional athlete goes into his eleventh drug rehabilitation center or fifth mandatory counseling arrangement for domestic abuse. And why anyone would get their news from a media outlet would even hire Geraldo escapes me completely. I'm sure he didn't mean to jeapordize U.S. troops with his reporting - I suspect he just decided that the rules laid out by the brass didn't apply to legends like himself. But kill him? Isn't that what eeee-vil dick-taters do? I do think it's kind of amusing the way people are suddenly down on the media. Seems like ever since General Wheeler (?) said what Rumsfeld says he didn't say, it's become fashionable again. |
OK you are tight PD.
I will not kill Arnett, but I will now help Diamond Jim beat the shit out of him.... you know if I could have 45 minutes alone with him. :D |
