Honestly it's been a while since I've checked it. I've never found Alexa stuff though; then again I don't download anything I'm not sure about. (Which isn't the case for the majority of net users so you've got me there.)

Let me go check now and I'll tell ya if I find it. I'm curious now. But what I'd be *really* interested in would be a ranking site like Alexa, put out by Google's toolbar results.

Carrie 12-29-2003 07:05 PM

Okay Serge, here ya go... I stand corrected!

Is there something newer than the 6.0? That's what I'm using and I run it every night but all I ever find are dataminer things. :( I've never gotten an Alexa one. I also have all my pop-ups blocked, so maybe that's where yours are coming from?

I think 6.0 has Update button..click on it

You are correct, Sir! I now have 6.181 (or something similar :awinky: ). I ran it and instead of the normal 12-18 found daily, it found 35!

Still all dataminers - what the heck IS that? Or is it a catch all phrase for all of them?

Now you're getting the idea. But since it's Serge's board you should send it to him.
Take a look at the Views on this thread compared to the rest on the front page and pad the zero's accordingly. :P

Impressions, views, branding, being seen... even if you've got someone genuinely trying to be shitty rather than just funning around (like in this thread), you're still getting eyes on your banner. No PR is bad PR and all that.

Get the free personal version and then hit the Update button after you've installed it just to check. Be sure to customize it's search too if you have your program files or temp files on different partitions like I do.

The funny thing is, I didn't have Alexa in my scans anywhere. Of course, about 4 or 5 months ago I went into my registry and ripped a bunch of shit out by hand instead of using a program to do it. There are still plenty of things that the cleaning programs miss or think are a part of something else if the programmers from the spyware places have done thier job right.
I wouldn't suggest that everyone go into thier registry though, at least not if you like your comp. still running correctly or you know what you are looking at.

KRL 12-30-2003 12:18 AM

I don't see why people get so wigged out over it. Its nice easy money. You're posting anyway. So knowing the register is ringing while your on posting is a nice extra.

does the person selling their sig have to agree to some sort of conduct guidlines? I would hate to buy something one day and find out the person I paid went on a racist (for example) posting spree the next day with my company name sponsoring each post.
Lol- no shit. That is certainly something to consider. Also making sure they mean a certain criteria.

I would sell my sig to the right company at the right price. Maybe then I’d be more of a board whore.

I love Oprano but everyone has their price.

Buyind sig was an interesting idea that has gone terribly worng. Just like anything the horde does, it ends up going over board and being worthless.

People who buy sigs for impressions are fools.

I click more sigs then I do banners. I'm just being honest. Banners are less personal. I don’t think I’d pay for a boring poster and let’s face it, 95% of the posters on the boards bore me to tears. Still, I find myself following threads of interesting people and enjoy reading what they have to say. Speak of that, where is Colin?

I enjoy the boards, really I do. I never spent much time in the past. My sites don’t really heavily promote an affiliate program and most of my revenue comes from private clients and consulting. None of them have asked for my sig or offered to pay me to post. If they made it worth my time I’d love to spend more time on the boards shooting the shit.

I have 3 to 4 days a week, a few hours a day to post if anyone is interested. I can certainly use the money to pay for feed and vet bills. Lol- now there’s a marketing twist- All proceeds go towards the care of adopted farm animals! Actually I just applied for my 501©(3) soooooo it’s tax deductible.

I think the flat fee is a fair deal. You can see who you're getting and what types of posts they usually make, and judge accordingly.
The pay-per-post though just invites BS to run up a bigger check. I hate to do this to Netpond, but this is a prime example...
http://www.netpond.com/threaded/showthread...=&threadid=9321

When I looked two nights ago, the last 5 pages of posts were all made by one person. He's getting a nickel per post and at the time was averaging 100+ posts per day. Using such award-winning contributions as "your momma" jokes that he copy/pasted off the web.

The TCG ppp stuff increased this type of posting over at GFY. Rather than the normal 25 replies of :D you get 200 of them. And they're all getting paid per post.
In that situation, the advertiser is just losing money *and* causing discontempt for their company through sheer annoyance. I know that "any PR is good PR", but sometimes that just backfires on you.

Dianna Vesta 12-30-2003 02:10 PM

If paid posters had impression tracking then I think there should be a quota on how many impressions they need to get per month or week. Then a random check to see what they are posting. Not paid per impression but knowing they must meet that quota. If they post interesting threads their views will be high. If not, they won't.

How do you find companies that pay for sigs and post?

Right now the sig thing is like the wild west. Some sig whores are getting lucky and making a killing on thier sig. In a month or two you'll see the big sponsers looking at numbers and then will weed out the bads ones. I believe one guy got $2,000 for 3 months and he had only 1,700 posts. The reason why he got a killer deal was all his posts wr're real. No spaming or whoring out at all. sig whores who couldn't sale their sig that day to anyone took note.

Go get you a copy of Search and Destroy to go with it.

Signatures used to be called taglines. When networking message bases each user had a tagline which he could select from a library of them in SLMR and each BBS appended its tagline to the post if exported out to identify the point of origin.

Not only was it branding for the sysop it was personalization for the poster.
