As I said before, I may not agree with all of your opinions ( though I do agree with some), I definately respect you for having them.
There are too many ass kissers in this business as it is.
However, if you want to get even more respect come out from being anon. See if you are anon it allows you to send out shots at people, without opening yourself up to shots in return.

I'm more inclined to donate time than money...anyone can write a check, but how many really dig in and help out with time. During the holidays I can usually be spotted at the shelters (not scoring free turkey ;))) and it started with a resteraunt I worked at...we would close the shop and all go down and assist in the cooking of the meals.
I'm also big on Special Olympics and for several years was a bowling and softball coach for Special Olypics. Again, this was a donation of time, not money.
My reasons for doing it was to give back, not because everyone would think I was this great guy or because I might get a better seat in heaven (I'm a non-believer, so hard to fathom people doing it for that reason ;)). SykkBoyTwo fat lazy goths and a couple vampire chicks

I don't know how much, if any - this discussion has to do with the Webmasters against Child Abuse Auction. But, I have my theories, like everyone else, BUT - I really couldn't care less WHY the Industry is so generous. I just know that they are.
I very much believe in active participation in preventing child abuse. Child abuse is the root of so many of our countries problems, with Drugs & crime. These kids are our future. We chose this particliar charity for several reason. One is that it in Nationwide in its activities. There may be be a center in your city??
Many of the more well known charities will not take money from Adult Webmasters. Can you believe that? No way am I going to fake who we are - just to give to their charity. This particuliar charity is made of of business people throughout the country, and they didn't care - as long as we were not fronting for illegial activities. The organization is sound, the money is not all eaten up with their saleries, and it goes to and does good on the grass roots level. It is a good cause - those who want to be involved by donating items or bidding on those items, may do so. Those who have other things that they do - that fine... No pressure - no problem.
Of course - those who actually give of their time - give the most precious gift of all. I am a big fan of Big Brothers & Sisters - Now there is where the action is!
WELL, WELL! There is a place for ANON's after all, huh Mike!

Dokk posted: "it makes sense to me for person to approach whatever group they do business with to raise monies for charities."
Very true. I've posted pleas for EWF on the webmaster boards from time to time since KK led me to this community, and it's really no different than when I made up flyers and put out coffee cans all around the studio lot when I was a lowly secretary. WolfCat and I spammed our (much smaller and less-"player"-filled in those days) email address books and helped save an animal's life, literally. That's an incredible feeling.
And Serge, maybe you're right and deep down in my soul I'm looking to make up for something. I use many of the same skills to drum up support for the causes I feel strongly about that I learned in our family's business of telemarketing... perhaps I'm atoning for all the poor souls who were subjected to the contest entry boxes, direct mailings and guys we had on the phones selling whatever product or service we pitched ;-)

Serge Mr. Cash pays $.80 per signup!
This charity thing that has been a hit lately amoung many of us I feel is a good thing always has been, and probably always will be.
It works as a tax write off and works to help those that have not. Going public with contributions and calling for othes to come aboard is good as it makes us aware of our mortality, makes us aware of the those who got a bad hand in life and personally makes me want to thank someone or something.
Perhaps this goes back to the earliest civilizations, except they did not call it charity, they called it sacrifice.
Sacrifice called on higher powers to bring good crops, luck, healing and forgiveness and a plethera of other events.
It is a call for divine intervention or divine acknowledgement. The question if there is a god or not does not matter. To die with a clear mind knowing you did what you can for the living while being alive is what matters.
Why would anyone want to die knowning they were selfish, knowing that they were nothing more or nothing less amoung the living.
I think we all strive for a little immortality through remembrance and acknowledgement of things that can affect the living long after our own death.
Charity/Sacrifice makes a mark in the hearts of the living and to die knowing that you made a difference to someone is truly priceless.
Give not because you have to.
Give not because everyone else is.
FM I met, and clearly I saw for a glimpse that he is a compassionate man. He does it from the heart.
I see this in many of us that I have met and it only happens in person. Never through a board, never through a phone call.
Sometimes I see no good values in some of us that I have met.
We need not to explore or question why, what and how. It hurts the heart of those capable of helping those who have not. And certainly hurts those who will never get help. ALIENSINCITY

***********
Rox,
this happened many years ago,
in my sign making days,
I had a very, very, very rich client,
nuclear submarine salesman,
He had more money than everybody you meet on all adult boards out there, including all past and present posters, his personal wealth was in the hundreds of millions.
We had leisurly lunch and he told me about his favorit charity, and asked me for donation.
I said sure but decided to go one step futher and went to AOL Investment Chat board I frequented and asked everybody for donation.
Folks on this board knew me well, all of them were successful stock traders and we together collected close to $100,000,
much, much more than I would be able to donate myself.
We sent money and all felt very upbeat about till I got e-mail from his Chairman of The Board that they of course appreciate the money, but very much disapointed that my personal contribution was only $9000, while they expected more from me......
I lost that acount a few weeks later.
and that's when it clicked in my head:
1) the client by himself could donate millions without even noticing it, but...he wanted get others for some reason....
2) when he got others like me,
he expected certain donation based upon HIS numbers in the head, not mine
3) my contribution and me personally be close to those numbers was more important to him than the money collected for the charity overall
and I say
it's all fucked up and those who lead crusade for children charity have some other issues with their
souls
power trips
fear of death
and those are just a tip of the iceberg and NOBODY can explain me what's under the surface.
I totally agree, it's similar to my fat live feed I brought out in '97. Everyone laughed at me and said "FAT" ; ) the next serious program came out 1 year later, and then it was history.

Thanks KoKo and Slav-
When we started developing the software, there was only one serious competitor in the category, now there are 4 total, all are great programs.
The great thing is that this illustrates that this is an important category for which every webmaster needs to be with at least one of the four programs out there.

I understand the basic desire of doing good and leaving the mark on this earth.
But....I do not think it's that simple.
I was a strong believer in charities untill my personal experience put everythign upside down.
LMK if you don't know the story.
Cuz leaving the mark argument doesn't compute with:
1) why not donate money one has in abundance and keep it between charity, himself and God?
2) why attack others who don't wanna give to this particular charity?
I don't make public $$$ I sent to my aging baby sitter who took care of me 40 years ago, I don't ask others to participate in my charities and I don't get pissed off when I meet others who do not share my opinions on the subject.

(a) we will all get old
(b) you, me, everyone reading this board will die (eventually)
(c) at a certain point we become "in touch" with our own mortality between getting old and dying.
(d)when you're dead all that's left is what you've done.. or haven't
which leads to every man's eternal struggle with what the time on earth has been worth .. to himself and significant others.
am not sure i agree with you on going "public".. !! always thought "public" meant everyone!!
people in the porn industry don't go to people in lawnmower industry for help.. do they? ;-))!!
it makes sense to me for person to approach whatever group they do business with to raise monies for charities.
it also (to me) makes sense to utilize whatever vehicle is available to accomplish the task at hand.. whether it's email, webmaster board, whatever.
why children?
because they are the ones who don't have a choice.
and our best chance for the future!
one does not have to be millionaire..
or pornographer,
to feel the angst of a child in need.
i can only speak for me,
having lost a child,
being blessed with the daughter i have,
makes me biased .. !!!!
One thought MIGHT be....they are "future" surfers.
Another might be, pornographers are people too, they very well could have children, and can't stand the thought of any child suffering.
Or, maybe they had rough childhoods themselves and wouldn't wish it upon any other children.
*************
Hi Serge, in answer to your question...I DO NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND WHAT DRIVES PORNOGRAPHERS MULTI MILLIONAIRES to become front runners in mostly children charities?
One thought MIGHT be....they are "future" surfers.
Another might be, pornographers are people too, they very well could have children, and can't stand the thought of any child suffering.
Or, maybe they had rough childhoods themselves and wouldn't wish it upon any other children.
Of course, there is also your explanation....which may or may not be the likely one, they feel guilty and are trying to make themselves feel better about the type of work they do by donating massive amounts of money to the biggest charities around...ie childrens charities.
Just a few thoughts I had on the subject is all :)
