Cunfucy, Boards are many things to many people. I would say you get out what you put in.

I have never been one to try ang get business from the boards. I use the boards for an outlet, to stay in touch with other people in the industry...

However I have seen some people successfully market and build their business through networking on the boards. The boards are only a place to start though...

IT is also a place to brain storm toss out ideas, and of course make annoucements.

I feel for you, thats such a terrible situation to be in espically when they also deleted your backups.
You don't want to hear this, but there is nothing you can do to the hacker, most of these hackers are in russia or non-US, The only thing you can do is concentrate on getting your site backup ... which is unfathomable without backups..
When you get your stuff back running make sure you close all ports except sshd and ftp, and install hosts.deny on there so only allowed hosts can get to your server.
+ Make backups to remote servers using FTP is another thing.

The boards can help you in many ways. It can be something not busines related and as simple as finding some more good friends to share good times with. Or it can be business related by finding more people to trade links with, get listings on link lists and TGP's easier because people know you, promoting your program or site, getting help in finding software or something else you need, or finding someone to partner with on an idea that one or both of you may have. Just a few basic things that the boards can be good for. Of course it can have it's downsides but those generally are pretty easily avoided with careful and thoughtful posting.

Anyways, just a few things to think on. It's not like you are a hit and run anon like some. You've always contrubuted to the boards and chose to stay anon to most people. Nothing wrong with that but just thought you might appreciate a response.

We have been hacked before, and the vandels just changed out all the index files, all we had to do was change them back. If that is the case, dealing with the authorities may be a waste of time.

IF they did more, then I would contact the FBI - they would have jursdiction, and the ability to handle this. Of course they might not be to interested in helping out a pornographer... ( which is ashame...)

I personally must say that I had little respect for Lee in the past. However over a little time and some recent events I have serisously changed my mind about her.
CE lost a good consultant IMHO, where as I doubted it every day while she as with FM. She is very tough skinned and certainly made for the business.

Confucy, my favorite female anon... I agree raw number of posts is not a great gauge of a board. I beleive in quality not quanity. But when you have both, it is hard not to be proud.

There is also another element which I think makes a great board - and that is the people who frequent it and make intelligent posts.
