This I have thought about for a long time.

If you plot random samples of certain quantitities, you get a "bell curve". Like, the number of heads you get while flipping a coin x times. If x is large enough and you flip enough times, graphed you get a "bell curve".

If you plot baseball player's batting averages, you also get pretty close to a bell curve.

The damned thing is, you can't tell the difference between random and skilled by looking at the curve. But you can use random assumption, to PREDICT the curve. This is interesting.

I don't know if a test exists to look for randomness v. non-randomness. I think this debate has annoyed market analysts for years.

The market looks random by graph. Some academics assume then that all market prices are just random. The random walk. This is the same as saying Tony Gwynn was not a good batter, that there will always be someone like him even by chance. This brings us to Warren Buffet. :)
