There were other people who were conducting business just like he was - who were LOW KEY, and thus not targeted by the gov't.

We are talking about deep issues, and most people only have a comic book/movie understanding of Flynt and the times.

However I have read numerous reports, and speculation it was probably a hit from the Mafia... That Flynt had owes some money and favors, but told the people he owed them to to fuck off.

I have loved and respected Larry Flynt and his business for many years now. He did fight for his 1rst Amm. rights against the right wing Christian biggots of Cincinatti and elsewhere, did some jail / mental hospital time, got shot, and alot of other stuff I probably don't know about. But from what I have read he has always stood up for freedom of speech, and other free speech causes. Did he have some screwups in his past, sure probably, but I belive he has helped more people indirectly then hurt them:)

though he may have helped the biz... he also had a 50/50 chance of making what you do now ILLEGAL EVERYWHERE and making what you do not possible.

when things work out ok, a person is a genius and a hero. when things do not and damage is done, he is a fucking idiot... yet the line between success and failure is often so fine, it is indescernable (sp). Often people succeed due to nothing more than present circumstances yet they are glorified, worshipped and respected anyway. the mainstream Internet offers many great examples.

also, there is another argument as far as motivation. if a person is fighting for people that cannot fight for themselves, that is (IMHO)commendable.

If a person is fighting just to fight, or fighting for self interests or publicity or fighting just as a way of venting personal issues... that is something completely different. Just because others happened to benifit from it, does not make his motivations any more noble or the result any more respectable. It just is what it is.

i do not know him and have never met him. of course, no one can take away from what he has done business wise.

Having the balls to break the law and push peoples buttons, does not exactly take keen business sense. (IEG)But holding your position in the market and building a publishing empire does.

Speaking of sharks, I was snorkling in Boca Raton over the weekend and was checking out some fish by this big coral reef and in this cave in the coral came out a HUGE shark. It may have been only 2 feet long but any shark to me looks 20 feet! They said the shark has been in their for years and has never attacked anyone, but I still swam off to another part of the reef.
