"Yellow" means "caution." (Frequently mistaken for "floor it," though.)
In a lot of places, you have to be "more than halfway" through the intersection before the light turns red.
Many have discovered, however, that actually stopping on the yellow to avoid any possible camera action causes a marvelous crash as the asshole *behind* you who was in mid-flooring-it action slams into the rear end of your car. Hence, the driver has to do that rapid "glance in the rearview mirror, evaluate, guage when the light turned yellow, how big is the intersection, will he make it????" crap that really makes getting the frigging ticket seem like a good idea.
I approach intersections pumping my breaks, making those nice flashing lights say "don't count on me running the yellow, asshole behind me."
