Is this the new "Y2K?"

Now I don't know about where you live, but here in Northern Michigan damn near EVERYONE I know either has Cable TV or Dishnetwork/Direct-TV I have not met ANYONE around my area who STILL uses an antenna to pick up TV signal.....

Now ALL OVER the media AND local stores here people are "Warning" that ALL stations will be converting to Digital Media in the next months (the actual date escapes me at the moment)

Anyway, they CLAIM if I don't buy this handy dandy converter box that I will no longer be able to watch my TV LOL

I talked to many people over the past few weeks and they are ALL scrambling to go buy one of these converter boxes, YET they have NO NEED for one, they already have a digital cable box.

Is this the next "money / scare scam" going on? and why are people so fucking stupid??

Discuss.

Great point. This is just one more mainstream company basically extorting money from unsuspecting customers. It happens everywhere now - no hold on this from the adult industry and the minimul fines of abuse is added to the cost of business and basically a slap on the wrist. You should send the information to your local news station and not just post it here - the consumer segment would probably welcome this story.

Companies are resorting to all kinds of tactics to sell their products and using misleading information and outright lies seem to be ok. Phone and Cable companies have been upselling their users information for years.

Now off point a little - but still important to know Equifax a Commission Junction client is allowing any third party advertiser to market their tools compromising our credit information. Consumer's personal information is fair game to every thief online Read the 2much media Nats depositions (not yet public but copies are out there - Charles and John may threaten your life if you report any of the specifics which makes me wonder) and the Commision Junction (class action by affiliates) law suit http://www.pornafia.org/showthread.php?t=24 and you would understand the depths of the schemes and fraud and how the unethical and illegal use of technolgy has become common practice, In a verisign conference call recently they claim it will be 2 years to address the current threats so some of us hoping to influence legislation and laws to protect consumers have our work cut out for us.

It's analog vs digital, and digital won.

Here is some info I found on this http://www.dtv.gov/consumercorner.html

I can't say I'm real happy about all of this since I will either have to replace my current TV's or get converters for all of them...either way, it's gonna cost me money. :(

I just found out the same thing happened in my car with onstar due to the change- the whole system has to be replaced because of the change over.

The government is spewing out coupons for these things, so the manufactures of the converters have hit gold, motivated buyers with a government bribe to buy them with.
