Got a call from Godaddy about XXX and my trademarks.

Sooooo........$210 to register a sunrise trademark.

Tell me,what happened tom the "about $60" that was proposed?

I told Godaddy my feelings about supporting XXX, and any registrar that was also supporting them.

I only hope the rest of the industry holds the line.

$60 is the rock bottom wholesale price. I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of people are actually paying that low price. I wouldn't take it for free.

I believe I saw a figure of $70 or $75 in a post ICANN approval statement from ICM. That would be the wholesale price from ICM to registrars, plus any applicable fees to ICANN etc.

GoDaddy and others are adding a sizable markup. I just can't see anyone buying up a bunch of these. A few will be thinking they have to protect their brand, and a few trying to cut in on someone's .com brand, but at $200+ per domain there won't be much speculating going on.

Unless I'm missing something major I just don't see how ICM is going to recoup the millions they've already spent. Now isn't that a shame *insert sarcasm smiley here*

This is a scam that is years and millions in the making.

My hunch is there's another shoe to drop at some point.

The other shoe they were counting on (but won't work) is to have .XXX mandated as the "only place for porn". Part of their marketing is no doubt to make .XXX appear to be "the" porn tld, and then to push from there.

Thankfully, in most Western countries, any move like this by governments would be met with resistance on all sides. The conservatives would scream that it gives porn legitimacy, and the liberals would scream that it limits free speech.

In the Eastern block, they would just ignore it.

The .XXX people just don't have a ton of cards left to play, that is why we are seeing high priced domains as they attempt to fleece back as much money as possible up front. I am betting that the "support for the industry groups" goes to shit fast enough, and there will be plenty of "where did the money go from .XXX" threads at GFY in about a year or so.

Ultimitely, it will be Google who will decide if .xxx will fly or not.

If adult-oriented searches start to yield only .xxx results, the masses will simply go with it, and the dominos will fall from there. :(

1) That only happens if Google alters their algorithm to favor .xxx domains. I don't see that happening.

2) Google isn't the only traffic source on the planet, and I'd suspect that it's not even the #1 source for a substantial percentage of adult sites.

1. I don't see it happening either. But stranger things have, and continue to happen.
2. Possibly not, but Google is still shepherd, and the masses are its sheep. Its influence can't be denied.

I'm in keeping with the thoughts that have been expressed here, and certainly I'll give it a year before we see what the ramification are. It would be naive to think that it is something that will blow over all of us, albeit due to search engines, trademarks, porn in general or all of the above.

Actually, .xxx is nothing compared to some of the steps Google is taking, particularly aimed at "affiliate" sites, as well as freshness calculations in their algo. It's been a bloodbath for many existing, older sites.

Yup, if your SEO strategy has relied heavily on link trades with other similar sites then nearly every Google algo adjustment over the last couple of years has taken another bite out of your traffic.

It's all a big fucking lie / scam. They said it was going to cost $60 when they were trying to get the "support" of the industry so they could get approval from ICANN. Now it's $130++ .

They said that if you owned the .com domain you would have first rights to buy the .xxx. I have heard several people who paid the $130 or whatever to register the .xxx of their .com and all that happened was it caused the .xxx domain to go up for auction for the highest bidder and the $130 lol well that just disappears...

Bunch of fucking scammers. I am glad to say I will never buy, i wouldn't take one if it was free. It has no value, you wont get any traffic from them unless you own one of the top 100 or so best keyword domains (which those get sold to the highest bidders as well). It is just one big waste of money.
