Electra, my experience is that you need to be very careful with adding too many plugins to wordpress. Some of them are very poorly programmed and can cause significant performance issues for your sites. There are certain things like tag clouds that are incredibly wasteful of system resources, and just having Googlebot hit your site and pull a couple of hundreds pages (and trigger a couple of hundred tag cloud requests) can pretty much sink a server.

Caching (even wp-cache) can help to lower the load significantly.

Yes..I'm finding quite a few plugins that sound great but just don't work..or which screw up other things. I'll certainly take your advice about tag clouds.

Ive used it on several of mine and it killed all the comment spam. They just never see the site.
