You know, I don't think Gaga is any more a threat than Madonna was in her heyday.

She signed on with Polaroid a few months ago, so that was a given - I'd be willing to bet they helped finance a 9 minute mini-movie for that reason.

I see it more of an opportunity .
I count at least 8 product placements in this video.
Brands that traditionally would never been seen along side of this type of entertainment.

And your right Cleo its a stunning video... I think its pretty damn ingenious.
The colors and lighting remind me of the same type of display that you cant take your eyes off of because its so surreal.

Ive seen the same type of technique used for everything from Pee Wees playhouse down to some killer video podcasts. Its obvious that TV kept my attention when I was young because when something thats presented in this lighting with the bright colors then I am always distracted.

Its funny that you mention Madonna though ... shes certainly upped the ante.

I found this video over the weekend on facebook where they were talking about all the evil that exists in this world. Still none of the puritans can take their eyes off of it either.

Where they are drawn in by the flesh and prison girls its the colors that have me watching it.

Its not porn they are using, they are using sex which they have been doing since ads first started.

True, but there are some pornstars in the video. Jessica Drake is the one with the mirror and licking the cell door, and Alektra Blue is the last one before Gaga is thrown in.

Of course I go to Madonna - it is very reminiscent of the "Justify My Love" video in its calculated purpose to titillate and draw a response. You may recall that "Justify" was banned from MTV, and was one of (if not the) first video singles ever released for independent sale.

... Sound familiar?

Not to mention Ms. Ciccone's release of a coffee table book a few years later that was in production at the time the video was released - you may recall that it featured a number of pretty big names at the time, including *gasp* a porn star.

History, in repetition.

Where do we go is the question?

Lady Gaga is one of those people who have figured out that a little talent and insane levels of self promotion beat the hell out of a ton of talent and no exposure. She is an ex-stripper who knows the value of a good tease and how to flash the flesh in a way that gets people's attentions.

The reality is the music is pretty much forgettable. Without the endless press coverage of her odd costumes and blatant cheesecaking for the cameras, nobody would know who she is. In fact, this thread in the end is just more promotion.

Think of her as Gene Simmons without the talent. She has gotten more than 15 minutes, but I have a feeling the alarm goes off at about 30 minutes.

Product Placement is big business. It's a little distracting from the art of music videos or films but not so bad. I forget the video, but I read somewhere that HP paid $50,000 to have their laptop appear for less than 1 second of air time.

It also helps if you view music videos as a business. Consider this. "We have a song that's sure to be a hit. We have Lady Gagga and Beyonce ready to sell your products. The video will be directed by Jonas Akerund (sp) - a true artist and visionary (Google him). All this talent on and off screen guarantees that eyeballs will watch every pixel on screen without blinking.

And using SEXY to SELL PRODUCT is nothing new. Seen a beer commercial later?

Damn! Beyonce gave me a woody in that!

That reminded me of that Christina Agulera (sp?) video from 4 or 5 years ago when she was in her "dirty" mode. The only real difference was the very obvious product placement this time. Instead of being subtle with it, they were slapping us in the face with it! Smart move.

Make no doubt about it ... I think its brilliant. To seriously get the impact turn that fucker to 1080 High def and full screen it.

Most obvious product placement I've ever seen: Movie-Presidio-Pepsi Truck that creams the crooked military guy in Chinatown.

That one has stayed with me since the movie...circa 1988?

Most obvious product placement I've ever seen...

Reese's Pieces: ET (1982)

Given the changing landscape of telvision and advertising in the broadband era, this latest upping of the ante for product placement is only going to continue as a cost effective alternative to traditional commercial breaks in the broadcast.

The annual Houston rodeo is well underway, and one of the concerts last week was Toby Keith. His tour is sponsored by Ford, and he led off his show with a 10 minute infomercial. Not bad when it's 2+ hour show after the commercial, but the shows during the rodeo are only about an hour including the commercial, so there were some critical reviews in the local press about spending that much time on the promo. Mr's Keith's people need to talk with Lady Gaga's.

I'm not sure it's a "bad" thing.

And it's still a risk.

Im pretty sure if he had some half naked cowgirl ass shaking out there no one would have said a goddamn word.

I was just reminded of this movie I saw a few years ago called Josie and the Pussycats. It's a live-action remake of the old cartoon show. There was nothing else on and decided to watch it and found myself liking it quite a bit.

Anyway, there is an INSANE amount of product placement EVERYWHERE in the movie, and I mean Everywhere. TARGET logos on a plane. McDonalds logos in the Shower, Motorola, etc etc. Non-stop cosmetics ads. Just incredible. I'm sure the movie made more in product placement than they did in ticket sales.

Note the REVLON, TARGET, and very strangely placed TIDE and MCDONALDS logos and placement in this 5 minute clip

I adore that movie.

It's an interesting juxtaposition, 'cos the underlying theme was to NOT necessarily go with what is fed to you by corporate media.

Here's what I want to know. I put up a simple wet t shirt contest video from bike week a few week ago on youtube. It was a very plain one, outside stage, nothing showing.

Even the T shirts were the type you can't see through when wet. Within the same day they deleted it and gave me a warning!!!!!! :o

Yet there are dozens of the SAME video on there. Plus thousands more that are way sexier than that one. So why the hell did they do that?
