Well, my main system HD took a dump overnight, so today has been spent replacing the drive (with a raid1 set) and installing a brand new official real release copy of windows7. Outside of a few things that have made me scream, it's not painful.
Freak a lot of work to recover from this shit though. Reinstall hell.
Anyone else got the 7 yet?

I will be upgrading, but I'm never the first. I always wait a while to see what bugs there might be and usually upgrade after the first round of fixes are released.
I'm not going to upgrade the XP machines I currently have. I'll wait to get Win7 on the new netbook I'll buy in the first half of next year. By then they should have most of the serious bugs patched.

remarkably, so far no particular bugs, some weird default settings that make me wonder.
The most signficant is that when the machine goes into sleep mode (I didn't ask for it, it is one of the weird defaults) it powers back up and can't get the network back easily. problem solved by getting rid of those stupid power down settings.
Certainly boots faster, and doesn't have very many of those evil "do you really want to?" popups that turned vista into a mouse click shooting gallery.
This thread has reminded me that I need to clean all our windows and screens now that the nice weather is arriving and we will be leaving our windows open a lot more.

..and oddly, it's the end of apple season up here. Hmmm.
I fed apples to my macaws today.

Well, after a couple of days of it, Windows7 isn't all that bad at all. The situation of vista and W7 reminds me very much of ME to XP.
ME was actually a very good stab at advancing the windows world. It was certainly a big step up from Windows98. Yet at the same time, it was a little too beholden to the past, and a little too bold in some ways, and had some obvious flaws.
Vista sort of did that too.
Now, XP has turned out to be a pretty reasonable OS. Security issues up the ass, but the basic concept wasn't terrible. Most people can live with it, and have for a long time. When offered Vista, they looks, turned their noses up, and left with their XP install intact.
W7 finally breaks that for me. It work enough like XP that it isn't a big mental step, but I can see where things are much more robustly made, and where they have started from a much more solid structure. I am sure there are issues, but it starts, it runs, and generally handles everything I do without an issue.
Heck, I even tested one of my most CPU and graphically intense programs, X-Plane 9 (you can download the demo) and turned it up pretty much to stupid levels of resolution and fill, and it handled it without any real issues. The overhead seems to be way lower.

No plans to touch any of my XP machines.
But the one notebook I had to buy and was force fed Vista on will be getting upgraded hopefully tomorrow. Pre-ordered on Amazon and in theory it'll be here tomorrow.

I never upgrade operating systems.
I just use whatever is installed when I buy a new machine.
