Maximum Prophet nods a NY Times piece on a Dutch group living the retro dream: they are trying to bring back Polaroid film. This group has the machinery to make the film packs, but needs to recreate the chemicals. Polaroid Inc. stopping making the specialized chemicals years ago, after having stockpiled what they would need for their last production runs.
"They want to recast an outdated production process in an abandoned Polaroid factory for an age that has fallen for digital pictures because they think people still have room in their hearts for retro photography that eschews airbrushing or Photoshop. 'This project is about building a very interesting business to last for at least another decade,' said Florian Kaps, the Austrian entrepreneur behind the effort [in Enschede, The Netherlands]. 'It is about the importance of analog aspects in a more and more digital world. ... If everyone runs in one direction [i.e. digital photography], it creates a niche market in the other.'"

I think it could work. Polaroids are a very specific look and artists love them. They are tactile and make you think before you pull the trigger. Polaroid film also has no grain and enlarges really well. I could be wrong, but I believe the largest camera ever built was a Polaroid.

Polaroids are also kick ass for photo manip in a way that can't be achieved digitally - you CAN manipulate the pix before the image fully sets.

I miss them. I was actually looking into buying one of the late models - with the sticky film - recently on eBay.

That is very true, and if you rub a smoke with the fixing solution you can get high as a kite. DMT or some such.

Not really, It was a common thing to rub the fixing solution of the film on cigarettes and get a buzz back when everyone was trying everything. It works. Prolly safer than what kids are smoking today.

Nah, that's kid's drugs. We just had Speed, Crank, Cowboy Juice, etc. Poppers were strictly for the other team.

I gotcha beat, I remember when it was MDA. Whatever you call it, its still speed and it kills.

Anyone remember cowboy juice? Take a bottle of robitussin DM, tape it into the inside of your hubcap (remember them?), drive for about fifty miles, and pour the clear liquid off the top and have fun. Sometimes I wonder why I am still alive.....lol
