They all cap at 5 gig a month. For work, marketing, emails, chat how fast can one blow thru that?

I do this stuff all the time whenever i'm out and there's either no wifi or like at a hotel with outrageously priced wifi. I either tether the blackberry or now more often than not use the T-mobile 3G webstick. But I always look for wifi to leech first.

For surfing, email, chat, etc, you'll never hit it unless you're trying to use it as your primary connection. Typical usage for vacations or just using it when you're away from the house and dont have wifi, it's fine.

Stay away from video and big downloads or uploads though. You can chew thru a gig pretty quickly that way.

At home I use desktops and laptops. On the road shooting laptops are a must and the free wifi is sometimes a crap shoot.

you obviously dont get out much.

i use desktops for horsepower and storage. rendering videos and the like still better done on desktops.

but notebooks portability is addictive even inside the house. i can work anywhere i want.

I'm still using my old IBM Thinkpad from 2001. It just may be time to upgrade soon!

You are right about notebooks. I got a regular sized one,a 10 inch asus and a ipod touch with wifi and my wife has a regular one and she has a 7 inch one. I like it best when my wife and I are icqing and we are in the same house. lol

You can use your $20/month T-Mobile account to connect your laptop to the Internet?

Yes, but not easily, (Bluetooth/software) and not broadband speed.

AT&T has the 5 gig cap, but they don't charge you for overages. (stupid eh?)

really they dont charge for overages? Then why cap it?

almost eveyrone has a provision that they can shut you down on anything even if "unlimited" if they dont like your play.

comcast now has their 250 gig per month limit, though i've not yet heard of anyone getting tagged here locally. now if you run some form of p2p 24/7 and your neighbors complain, you can bet you get "the letter".

same is true of the wireless companies. 7-10 gigs every now and then when travelling likely wont get their attention. use it as your primary connection though and roll past that 5 gig limit as a matter of routine and you get flagged.

you'll find same thing is true of "unlimited roaming". get an unlimited roaming plan then move someplace your primary carrier has no presence and i would bet you last probably 120 days max.

the blackberry plans are pretty generous. they are "unlimited" and dont cost very much. and you can tether your blackberry and use it as a modem very easily. i tend to connect via a usb cable instead of bluetooth though....less opportunity for lag.

this will become very juicy whenever RIM releases a HSDPA blackberry...as that'll give you 3G speeds on T-Mo's network.
