View Full Version : So I'm booking Internext...

Tomorrow is the day the registration prices go up by the way...
So I'm on their site looking around, I hit the pricing on the rooms, and I had to get up and get a kleenex to stop my nose from bleeding.
Now, I'm not cheap. Anyone who knows me, knows I typically grab at least an upgraded room if not a suite when I go to shows. I'm a high maintenance bitch ya know. But I've been getting 4-5 emails a week from various Vegas properties offering me every incentive in the world to come out. And Palms and AVN wants full price.
So I shop around a little. I can stay virtually any place else on the strip for the entire week for what one night would cost at Palms. Amusing myself, I found I could book the Penthouse suite at Bellagio for same price as the regular rooms in the fantasy tower.
And this also after Palms pissed me off last year and didn't overly impress me with the service, restaurants, gaming or anything else. If show wasn't there I wouldn't even consider staying there.
I like staying on site, and I'm gonna sleep on it overnight, but I may be enjoying a few extra cab rides.

Vegas is certainly one of the easiest places out of all the shows to get around and find alternative lodging at.

And in the case of the Palm since it's close to nothing, I found myself in a cab anytime I was doing anything other than the show floor or hotel bar anyway. So this time, I'm leaning toward doing the reverse. Cab over to the show, and when my nuts go to sleep or it's time to feed or seek entertainment, head back over to the strip.

I just looked at the hotel rates. In this economy at this time, its a joke. When GM is going broke and its execs being ridiculed for flying in personal jets, and big companies are scaling back or cancelling their Christmas parties, this is crazy. It will be interesting to see how this plays out as the recession (yes it is now official) deepens.

Perhaps we could arrange an alternative gathering, like "Great Assholes of the Pacific Northwest (and their wives/girlfriends who put up with them)" webmaster party, rhetorical . . . I know at least two people who are qualified to attend (me being one of them, and not in the "wife/gf" category). The last one was fun!

I AM a cheap bastard. (I prefer to call it "frugal," but didn't want to send Gonzo running for the dictionary)
And I can't sleep, knowing I'm throwing hundreds away on a bed.
I stay downtown, and rent a car.
For the price of a week downtown, AND a rental car, it costs about the same as one night a big casino.
I also stay for CES, so I'm usually there a solid week. Parking is basically free everywhere (Except the Hilton,) so the freedom a car gives me is an added bonus.
I'm always suspicious of people and programs that blow huge sums of money on deluxe hotel rooms.
Sure, sure, we all soooo successful we can spend, spend, spend. Next year? They ain't around no mo'.

LOL... My favorite local BBQ place has beef brisket, pork, chicken and sausage. Get any one you want with your chosen sides, or mix and match.
I like to stop there for lunch and get their deluxe baked potato (Texas-sized of course) with all the usual toppings, plus chopped beef brisket and BBQ sauce. :okthumb:

I will pass on Outback. Its Canadian and it seems conventional wisdom dictates we can't make ribs. But I gots to know.

I'll pay for convenience and comfort, but there are limits. And over triple the going rate is beyond that limit for me.
Absolutely agree with your approach for getting most bang for the buck.
For me personally, I haven't rented a car in vegas in a decade. Cabs are convenient and reasonably priced, and traffic is a pain. Plus, I have been known to partake in the occasional adult beverage while in Vegas. Shocking, I know, but I have found that Vegas is a fairly easy town to get drunk in.
I prefer to stay toward mid-strip so I can walk to most of my favorite spots to drink, eat and gamble.

Vegas has an incredible selection of top notch restaurants, but I'm not aware of a single decent BBQ joint. If it exists, it'll be off the strip for sure, and probably as far away as Henderson.
You'd think someone would take advantage of it as a gimmick and put in a real honest to goodness smoke pit and serve bbq on the strip. You could lure a crowd with the smell alone.
The ONLY bbq I know of on the strip other than the occasional buffet selection would be at the Harley Davidson cafe, but I'd rank it only marginally better than what you might get at Outback or as bar food.

I finally booked, so I'm locked.
I'm in late Sunday afternoon and out Thursday. I notice a lot of people have same thoughts I did about the rates at Palm. I see a lot of people grabbing Gold Coast and Rio, both more or less across the street. I opted to stay on the Strip, I'll be down at the Mirage. I have a sneaky hunch this show is going to be too dead to hold my attention, so I might as well be on strip where I can get decent food and gaming.
That pesky free market thing is working well for everyone other than AVN with laws of supply and demand. One could easily do airfare and room for $600 or so this year, and that's without a room mate.
Flights out of Atlanta on Delta in coach are only $303 round trip right now non-stop, should be cheaper if you depart further west.. I didn't even look at Airtran or other carriers. And rooms for $75 or so a night are readily available at good properties.
