I have a site I'm just about to release that could benefit from being multilingual.
How do you price translation services?
I have two methods of paying that I wont use these days in adult thanks to irresponsible and unreliable people.
1) By the hour when there's no firm commitment to how many hours something will take.
2) Quasi salary. "I give you this much per week/month, and you do this job I need doing." You'd be amazed how much you end up paying for very little work in those scenarios.

So, does that mean that you charge by the number of English word's translated or the number of words that the translation results in. That could get very expensive in german. Also are all languages equal? Do French, Italian, and Japanese cost the same?

The word count is performed on the source text.
Western and Asian languages have different rates.
